Nice work on cleaning up the canopy fit and the scribing looks perfect.

Keep ‘em comin

Peter

Thank you Peter!
Meanwhile I‘ve also finished the riveting. Moving close to the painting...

Yesterday I added all the missing rivets to the airframe. Took some time but now it’s finished. Here are some sample pictures:

Then I moved over to the guns. The representation Italeri created is more than poor.
Since the caliber of the gun is 30mm I used 0,9mm cannula to replicate them. I used reference fotos from the Duke Hawkins Book. The damping-rings are not the same for the C and DS but the arrangement is the same:

The damping-rings (although prominent on the real plane nothing provided by Italeri) came from the Eduard Exterior Brass Set and were really fiddly to bend and glue:

But the result was acceptable for me.

The last thing I did was to add the pitot tube to the nose. It has to be attached already at this stage because it’s partly painted.
I used the Master pitot which needed some rework to make it fit  perfectly.:

That’s all for today.

This is how my Mirage looks like now:

I now will go on with the landing-gear and the preparation of the plane for priming.

Looks great Kai. What's surprised me is how long this thing is!

Thanks Gus,

If you mean the pitot: I think it protrudes so much because it should be in totally undisturbed airflow in front of the plane (same as with the 104). But could also have another reason...

Your exterior looks great!  I really like the guns and dampeners.  Good luck with not knocking off that pitot tube.

The pitot tube is metal. You can pick up and hold the plane on it. Hope that I won’t knock it off. ;)

Hi Kai,

Looking better every day, love the dampening rings on he guns, these kind of details will make the model stand out for sure, good choice on the pitot tube, they really make nice parts at Master's

Looking forward to the next build stage,

Frank

Thank you Frank,

Master really makes beautiful accessories. I use them as often as possible for my kits. Especially the pitot tubes make life for them much safer like on the F-104 or MiG 21 or EE Lightning.

Yesterday evening I took care once again of the cannon dampers. A friend of mine told me that the web between the damping rings wasn’t present on the real aircraft. So I carefully removed it:

Then I moved over to the landing gear.
The front landing gear only has the hydraulic lines for the nosewheel-steering. The landing-lights aren’t present at Israeli Mirages.

The hydraulic cylinder of the nosewheel damper was painted with my 1 mm Molotow Chrome pencil.

Then I brushpainted it with Tamiya XF-16 flat aluminum. Detail painting and slight weathering will follow:

Next was to paint the hydraulic dampers on the main wheel legs, because after installation of the scissors on the legs you can’t paint them anymore:

102E9AC0-F288-41B4-BD94-355CA5CE740E.thumb.jpeg.352b18d3d889f143248584dac8d4cc1e.jpeg

Again Molowtow pencils (1 and 2 mm) were used. This has to dry overnight before I can continue with the detailing.

Last thing I did was the assembly of the subsonic tanks.

What do you think about the fit? Correct: also here rework needed!

09375000-9F4C-4E21-B981-5DE4895C1776.thumb.jpeg.00523c28dd1625d4042670190a8e0597.jpeg

Since this was the last assembly of the kit the result is: No assembly of the whole kit without any rework!! I never had this up to now in my long modeler life...

Next will be to finish detailing of the main wheel legs and detail painting of the assemblies.

Kai,

The improved LG look great!  I'm not surprised about the fuel tank. The kit is a lemon.

Holy Cow - Awesome work. The dampening rings look great as well as the gear - not to mention finishing the rivets, nose gear and detail work.

Can't wait to see the Mirage after her priming in the paint booth.

Keep 'em coming

Thank you Peter,

when I have finished the landing gear I will start the painting process.

This evening I added two prominent filler caps to the upper fuselage. Italeri simply left them out:

Then I painted the flexible hydraulic hoses of the front landing gear:

Not that big...It‘s now ready for weathering.

Finally I prepainted the main landing gear legs and added the scissors. The casting quality of them was really bad:

reworked ...

Finally I scratched 2 rings which I glued to the legs and which are used to guide hydraulic lines to the brakes:

Next step will be to add the hydraulic lines to them.

Nice details, Kai.  A dark wash will set everything into relief.

I remember being under the Wheel Well of an F4 Phantom.  As a modeller, we see these as small parts.  But IRL...  they are quite massively thick.

Terrific work on the gear. Just have to hand it to the crew at Italeri for not missing any opportunities that require cleaning up their charming work.

I know what you mean. It‘s really impressive when you are standing in the last-chance-area of an airfield and a huge Phantom is rolling towards you...

Great idea. Mine is still in the box, never opened, plus I have the IIIC upgrades and most likely will remain that way. After following all your incredible work, I quickly came to the conclusion, it's way too much work for me to tackle at this stage of the game

Keep 'em comin

Yesterday evening I detailed the main landing-gear legs with hydraulic pipes.

These were my reference pics:

and this is how the legs of the model look like:

I didn’t add any electrical wires since they would have been too small.

Now their painting can be finished and then weathered.
