Monogram F-101 Voodoo 1/48, RFI

This reminded me of how much I hate masking canopies using tape, but it was not nearly as bad as it could have been.  The masks for the canopy fit very well and are of the proper shape.  It was just the windscreen that was so far off.  Whew!!

One of the difficulties in masking is the Voodoo canopies have a yellow ring around the glass (which honestly I have no idea what it is, @Martinnfb?) which gets masked as a step in the overall painting.

Fortunately the main canopy masks will still work just fine.  The windscreen may not be too hard to hand paint.  This picture shows I adhere to the philosophy of 'why use one piece of tape when 10 will do?"

This energized me enough to clean up the cockpit painting and install the cockpit. Tried to use my 'Sprue Glue' on some gaps but my mixture is a bit too thin. No worries, lots more sprue to use!

Well, I THINK I have it masked so we will see if not tonight, then tomorrow. I ended up using some of the 1mm Tamiya flexible white tape around the windscreen.  Expecting that I would freehand any touch-up needed.  The Canopy masks for the outline were short, but that was a super simple fix.

I have pics of the latest paint work - got all of the camo sprayed but need to touch up some areas (as usual).

What I need is a snow-day week to stay in and get a lot of this done!

There were AM decals out there at onetime to simplify the application of the seal tape on the canopy and windscreen.  I’m not sure they’re still out there.

NOW you tell me after I go through hell and back taping!!  I think you just wanted to see me do it.!    Kidding, of course!  I'm more likely to hand-paint the sealtape as anything.  Can't be THAT hard, right? :hsmack:

Here are some pics of the camo painting sequence.  I'm going to have to go back in and do some fill-work, but also the colors just do not look right to me.  I used MRP's Dark Green SEA camo, Green SEA Camo, and SEA Tan.  Thoughts are welcomed!

Light colors first

Then the Green

(Work in progress picture!  This is when I realized I needed to mask the tape areas of the windscreen and canopy)

And the Dark Green

The Green looks very splotchy in these pictures so will go back and take a look at that on the plane.  I may do another spray to fill-in where needed.  Just love that MRP paint, however!  So smooth...

Chris

I tend to get the same 'splotchiness at times, especially when using a .2 tip and needle and to redo those areas to smooth out the color. The other way to look at it, it's almost instant weathering as the Voodoo knows where you are headed and just wants to help.

Peter, we are of a like-mind!  I was thinking the same thing.  🙂

Chris,

I always make my paint splotchy, usually tinting the base color at least twice.  I find if you can keep it from looking too uniform, it helps weather the model.

Gary, Usually I intend for the paint to be splotchy - varying the undercoat and purposedly varying the topcoat as you do.  I should have just not said anything and if asked just say "Yes!  I planned it this way!"

In between working on the tail of the Catalina, got some paint on the Voodoo and ready for decals, which I just remembered, I have none!  Probably have some stars and bars, but that's it.  Will start a search...

Landing gear and the weapons bay are together so about time to get those on.

Added a few (incorrect!) decals as I had absolutely nothing that was close to accurate - oh well!  But got the plane up on its wheels finally.  Have to paint the missles which go underneath.  But did run into two build problems.  Attaching the wings before inserting the nose gear or the weapons bay was a no no.  The nose gear bay did fit, with a bit of sanding and some persuasion.  The weapons bay, on the other hand.  Nope, not going to fit.  So the weapons platform was fitted into the opening (pictures later!) so the result is the platform is fixed, rather than rotating to show the two different missles arming the aircraft.  My bad on not following the build order closely enough.

Will fit the engines/exhaust after the flat coat.

That's it for now!
