As I need to complete a WWI aircraft, this seems like a good way to maybe keep momentum up to a finish...
There'll be a lot of firsts for me.. mainly centered on this being my first biplane.
I was trying to get some practice on a Roden Albatros, but the engineering makes it quite hard, harder than a WNW kit, so I'll turn to this one.
No idea which markings I'll go for yet, kit or maybe Pheon do a set...?
Any advice or pointers from anyone who's done this kit already welcomed.

Lovely work on this beasty...
Just a quick question... when you have the engine compartment laid out in the early photos, I can't see any connection between the engine and the transmission... Is there another part to go in?

They're both beauties...

Love that first shot Dave...

Really like the effect with the mottle...

Thanks for the advice Steve....
and at last, a photo or two...
Opening with a crap photo of the portside canopy rail in position, This is a prominent feature on the 190 and I always try to model it if the canopy is open. Cut back the cockpit wall and glue in an 'L' shaped bit of plastic extrusion..
Next the butchered cockpit. There was a void behind the pilot's seat, radio, stowage etc in there. So I separated the cockpit from the rear deck and have started to cut parts down to shape. Opened up the part in front of control column, added a map case, opened up hole for throttle friction control and last, but not least, added the FuG 217 radar scope, replacing the ammo counters.
Final photo is of the rather tasty Eagle Editions FW190 seat from their 190D cockpit (you get two - with and without belts). This really 'dresses up' the most visible element of the 190 'pit.Better pics later when I get some paint on these parts.Matt -
Good review.
I think you're right in that Valiant Wings are the company actually giving the reader good research, useful material and a useful narrative at the 'sub-opus' level of publication. Sometimes the 'eye candy' is covering up the fact that we're just getting the same old stuff in new packaging...

Yes, very good effect. It is always surprising to see how 'beefy' these things were on the real machines... not at all petite..!

I'll take some photos over the weekend and post.
Needless to say this is no longer OOB... who was I kidding...? Progress is better than expected though. Noticed that there's a load of sinkmarks and lines on the upper wing on the kit I'm doing...so it's out with Mr Surfacer... Still got to say that this kit does show its age a little in the cockpit area. The fit of instrument panel and side consoles against the fuselage is pretty loose, so I've done a little shimming - it was all very tight in the real aircraft...
Anyone have any tips regarding putting the wings on...? Assemble completely then attach to fuselage; glue lower wing to fus then uppers or uppers then lower....?

Aha... right Steve.. I thought you knew of a new release of this subtype - say by Hasegawa...
It'll be good to see another 190 NF on the go....

Cripes Frank
Sounds like a nasty prang....
Hope you can get started on something soon... just remember that you've also got to get back up out of the modelling room once you're down there.... (I had an injury once that meant I could go down but not up stairs).

Looks good Mike
I wish Steve Gallacci would release his D-11/13 cowl again... a work of art....

Spent last night struggling with the fit of the 'pit... Anyone else notice how the fit of the panel and side consoles leaves a lot of space along cockpit walls?
I've cut the parts that hold the front of the assembly as it looks like they held everything too low. Fit better, but not great - although I suspect little is to be seen in there once it's all buttoned up.

Another cracker Dave!
Well, you've managed 3 in the time I haven't finished one....
Mine is coming along though...

Yes...
Yes they do. Stay tuned for September 1st!

Hi Steve
What happened on Sept 1st..? Did I miss something?
Anyway... I have finally shifted my butt into gear and have started cutting and gluing... nothing 'fancy' for this build... out of the (two) box(es)...
Pics when there's something worth looking at... everyone's pretty familiar with Hasegawa FW190s by now...

Thanks Matt
Interesting stuff.... now maybe next year Hannants will have a 50% off sale, but I won't hold my breath.....

Wrong side of the 'pond' shipping and HM Customs makes it pointless. Though some of the terminology that I've seen coming from the US is reaching our shores (Black Friday, Cyber Monday/Week - whatever they actually mean) the reductions are massively underwhelming on the whole.... I'm not sure that Hannants even bother.?

Like the extra work you've done in the 'pit...

Very nice...
Barracuda wheels?

Do you think the red is meant to represent a red primer coat...? I don't even know if these got such a finish, but you all too often see tanks (especially German) given a red oxide primer... Method to their madness...

Ah... so these are racks for toothbrushes when you have them at home or from the actual shop display...?
Can't quite make them out well enough...

Hello and welcome Rossco.
Can you explain or show us a piccy of this - "Toothbrush racks thrown out at the local supermarket were excellent for tools, lined with litho sheet and some with plastic straws cut to length. I was suitably amazed at how many files/knives/chisels/scissors I could fit so close to hand."
I'm intrigued..

Trumpeter Hurricane is one of their best kits - full stop. Same league as the 262. I had one, sold it and regret it now....
Is the PCM kit difficult then? I have one but haven't really looked at it in great detail...

Fab work.... I have only dabbled around the edges of vac forms and am really impressed at the momentum you maintain in your builds...
Can't remember if you have any background in engineering or similar? I say that because the bit that I seem to fail on with vacs is getting everything lined up and square - your dowels for eg... getting them in place so wings just slide on is no mean feat...
I must dig something out and finish it off....
