So ...whats the bulge all about ? Gun breeches ?

 

+5 for perseverance as well 👍 filling and sanding for me, is reserved for car/bike  bodywork ...and I don't like it much then either .

Thank you for the kind note, sanding sucks, especially because of the constant backtracking caused by adjustments.  The reasoning behind brand new cowling are the AS series of DB603 engines that had  bigger supercharger. The diameter and displacement required reshaping of the engine mounts/ bearing arms. The bulging was redesigned with new and improved  aerodynamic fairings for less drag. The radiator and valve/rocker covers were bigger as well, hence the enlarged lower cowling.  

It all looks massive, but that's misleading, they just filled the areas around the existing bulges of the G type , figuratively speaking. There are few pictures shoving 109s G with mismatched cowling.
