Hi!

We are visiting our daughter in Scotland again. She has moved to Glasgow, so that'll be our centre of operations. What would be your places to go "near" Glasgow? I was trying to find any aviation or military themed museums, but my google-fu is not that strong now.

Last time we went to the National Museum of Flight in East Lothian, that was a really nice place. Even the not-modeller-people liked it. 😊

I found Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum and Solway Aviation Museum, of which the latter seems to be slightly better. Montrose Air Station Museum is also interesting, but that is a bit farther away.

Is there something else that I'm missing now? Any tips are appreciated.

Regards, Jani

Hi Jani

No, you're not really missing any others with that list. I'd agree that the Solway museum is the better of the two in the south but they're only about a 45 min drive apart so definitely possible to visit both in one trip.

The Montrose museum is only about 10 miles from where I am and definitely worth a look if you're close by but I'm not sure it justifies a 2 hour plus drive from Glasgow.

East Lothian is definitely the best of the bunch.

For 'non-aviation' stuff, Loch Lomond is always worth a trip and Stirling castle and the Wallace Monument are fairly close to Glasgow. The Burrell Collection out in Poloc at the west end of Glasgow and the Kelvingrove museum are also worth a visit.

Loads of great places to eat and drink in Glasgow as well to show that Scottish food is not just pies and deep-fried Mars bars!

Cheers, Gus

Thanks a lot, Gus!

We will discuss our options, Montrose seems like a good option since the Dunnottar Castle is also an interesting location.

Last time we did a National museum of flight and the Tantallon castle double trip, maybe a similar trip now to the Montrose.

Good timing on this thread.  I’ll be there in a couple of days.  I’ll be on the big cruise ship at the docks nearby.

Hi Jani

Yes, Dunnottar is definitely worth seeing as the location is stunning and you can get nice fish and chips and ice cream in Stonehaven!

If you have time it's worth popping in to the castle at Glamis as well - many interesting connections to the royal family and Macbeth.
