RalphSarc Posted June 18 Author Posted June 18 Okay we’re off to the races with my Tamiya 1/35 Sherman Easy Eight. Completed step 1 and 2 assembling the lower hull. 2
RalphSarc Posted June 18 Author Posted June 18 It a rainy holiday morning in Richmond so enjoyed an hour of building. Assembled the Differential Cover along with its tow hooks etc in step 3 and then attached to the front of the lower hull in step 5. HobbyTown USA in Richmond is open 10-5 today so planning a trip to purchase some needed supplies!! 2
RalphSarc Posted Wednesday at 05:26 PM Author Posted Wednesday at 05:26 PM Complete steps6,7 and 8 assembling the idler shaft, which was fiddly to align and the exhaust deflector. 6
KevinM Posted Wednesday at 07:10 PM Posted Wednesday at 07:10 PM Looking good Ralph seems the typical Tamyia kit . 1

It’s a pretty sweet kit however a wish it had link in link tracks rather than rubber tracks. I do well painting and weather rubber tracks and have had folk mistakenly think that they were metal tracks. Personally I love the fit and realistic look of the link in link tracks. 2
RalphSarc Posted Wednesday at 11:12 PM Author Posted Wednesday at 11:12 PM Possible rain showers today so enjoyed my morning coffee and assembled 2 drive sockets, 4 return rollers and 6 smaller return rollers in step 9 and attached them to the lower hull in step 10. 6
BlrwestSiR Posted Thursday at 11:38 AM Posted Thursday at 11:38 AM Some nice progress there Ralph. Nice to see the actual Tamiya version get built. I have the earlier Tamiya release of the Easy Eight which turned out to be a re-box of the Tasca kit. 2

Other than the rubber track, would rather see link in link tracks that come with many new Tamiya armor releases, it’s a stellar kit. I’m adding lots of stowage plus a Tamiya 1/35 German bike to add interest. 3
RalphSarc Posted Thursday at 11:54 AM Author Posted Thursday at 11:54 AM Turned out to be a chilly rainy day so rather than take a trip over to the storage site to work on the Flair dashboard I decided to stay home, do some projects around the house and continuing to build my Easy Eight lower hull. Completed steps 11 through 13 assembling the suspension boggies, remaining return rollers plus stapled the tracks together. That completes the lower hull. 6
RalphSarc Posted Friday at 10:55 AM Author Posted Friday at 10:55 AM Last night I decided to assemble and install the road wheels to their boggies and paint them along with the lower hull rather than individually. I’ll finish the others this morning. 3
RalphSarc Posted Saturday at 11:45 AM Author Posted Saturday at 11:45 AM Second row of road wheels assembled and installed! 2
RalphSarc Posted Saturday at 11:46 AM Author Posted Saturday at 11:46 AM Not sure I understood step 6 instructions concerning the correct way to install the idler wheels. Luckily the kit come with a few extra plastic track links which I added to the rubber tracks to make them fit. Painting, weather and a splash of mud will hide my error!! 2
RalphSarc Posted Saturday at 10:49 PM Author Posted Saturday at 10:49 PM Okay the tracks are a bit cobbled together but one the upper hull skirts are installed plus a touch of dirt you’ll never know!!! 2
RalphSarc Posted Sunday at 12:01 PM Author Posted Sunday at 12:01 PM Finally on the assembly of the upper hull. Completed steps 14-15 attaching the fenders. Also had to drill out several mounting holes for headlight frames etc. 1
RalphSarc Posted 19 hours ago Author Posted 19 hours ago Checking out the fit between the upper and lower hulls!! Plus you can hardly see my track mistake!! 2
RalphSarc Posted 19 hours ago Author Posted 19 hours ago Trying a totally new technique! Creating casting marks using Tamiya Putty and Tamiya Extra Thin. If this is successful I’ll apply the technique to the upper hull and turret. Fingers crossed!🤞 3

I have successfully created casting marks only with limonene cement and scotch brite. Just apply cement and let it stand for a few minutes...then tap with scotch brite and you have rough texture. 2

Mix it together on a bit of cardboard and then using a stiff bristle brush dab it on the piece. Some use Mr Surfacer 1000, I think, to achieve the same results. It looks a bit rough, and some sand it back a bit afterwards but I didn’t. Remember they were casting tanks not a work of art!! After painting and weathering it looks amazing. Just like real casting marks!!

RalphSarc Posted 5 hours ago Author Posted 5 hours ago Pretty cool technique. I’ve watched several YouTube videos and this is the results I’m looking for. I think I’ll try the turret and mantle next. Still crossing my fingers!🤞 This is actually quite fun!!! I’m told the technique should be totally random plus once painted and weathered over it’ll look very realistic. 2

FullArmor Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago I've never built a Sherman. I might try this myself. I'm looking forward to following this build.🙂 2
