  1. Gaz,

Quickboost do a tailwheel set, although out of stock at BNA and CMA locally. QB32185 if searching elsewhere...

There is a Resikit late wheel set in stock at BNA, with the separate fork and tailwheel included...

Synthetic Ordnance Works offer an A-5 / A-8 main gear set for the Hasegawa kits, MLGS 1005 if you're searching.

Eduard of course do a dedicated full set for the Revell kits, however this has a square peg at the top of the main leg in order to fit Revell's gear bay, which may complicate things unnecessarily.

Edit: The FW-190 main gear were effectively the same throughout production. Frequently, rubberised accordion-type gaiters were seen covering the movable section of the lower oleos on earlier variants.

As it’s now officially Christmas Day in the far Southern Hemisphere...

    Now half over already!

We woke early, and headed off to Palm Beach on the Gold Coast. Ambient temperature 28 Celcius, water temperature 25 Celcius. Cloud cover early that cleared after 10am, which by then is time to get out of the Sun anyway.

Dogs had a lovely time in the Lagoon there, and now we're back home and prepping for lunch and a snooze.

Here's hoping that everyone's wishes come true for today; whether that be something nice in the Stocking, or enjoying the company of those special to you.

  3. Might be a possible point of ingress?

We also have the same kind of Fly problem. We have an internal garage door leading to a covered courtyard, and if that door isn't shut when the cooking is happening, the Flies get in through this small gap in the internal sliding door.

To help you guys understand that I don't have filthy appliances...  you need to understand that construction codes you know in the northern hemisphere don't exist here in Australia.  The average house in Australia is unsealed and not insulated.  My house is clad in dark bricks.  Every four or five bricks there is a drain hole the height of the brick just one layer of bricks from the ground.  Easy entry and egress for anything smaller than a red squirrel.

Modern Australian houses, especially north of the New South Wales border, are deliberately made to 'breathe'. North of the Tropic of Capricorn, Cyclone bolts are mandatory... Long threaded bolts secured by long nuts, that run internally from the bottom of the wall frame up to and through the roof truss, which basically stops the entire roof from blowing off in a Cyclone. Similarly, houses here are made a little draughty to alleviate internal pressure during storms, and allow hot air inside to dissipate. Possums, Rats, Mice and even Snakes can get inside the roof cavity easily; it's not unusual to find a shed Snakeskin up inside the roof occasionally. IMO up here if it's a hygiene or cleanliness problem, you're much more likely to see Cockroaches about the place than Flies.

Gaz, you mentioned that the Stove exhaust vents to the outside of the house... May I ask, how are the spaces above the vents in your Bathroom / Toilets? These might do with a screen across the top of them if they're just an open gap into the Roof cavity.

  5. Yes Phil...

At this point, the plan is to have everything that can be opened to be exposed. The Eduard motor set is meant for the newer Revell kits, but it will fit the Hasegawa example I'm using so long as it's displayed in this florid state.

    IMG_20201205_140331.thumb.jpg.91294255ca6505b50e940076cb8518a5.jpg

Eduard do not include the exhaust louvres, upper gun trough panel, or the bulged cheek panels that cover the air intakes (one of more inaccurate parts of the Revell kit). The firewall and cowl guns will be sourced from the Aires Dora set. Hasegawa kit parts will be used for the others, apart from the exhaust louvres; which will be scratch built.

    Work continues slowly...

Eduard gives a colour call-out of silver for the base of the cylinders, however it appears that these featured a black base in the area below the baffles. At least according to this example recovered from a crash site.

So black has been applied by brush, in a half-half mix of Tamiya acrylic and watercolour pencil. This custom mix is not as hardy as the straight acrylic paint, and can be rubbed with a cotton bud or scratched with the end of a toothpick to expose highlights in the silver lacquer base colour underneath.

    You crazy Canucks...

That's not a Penis, stop being phallacious.

On a slightly related note though...

Canada's CMO says you can't kiss your partner during Coitus.

Harv, that is 'should' sit further back towards the tail...

Aires by the look of it have cocked something up somewhere along the line. Jim experienced the same problem as you, in his excellent pull-apart 'Dora build a decade ago, and I quote:

    IMG_20201119_044050.thumb.jpg.41692254f5df22aa9b37cab3a85ca45a.jpg

The Aires-supplied deck is the correct length and shape. However it's going into the Hasegawa fuselage that has a deck that's too wide and too long. So the solution that you found works, and you're in great company as well into the bargain.

  8. Harv,

The Aires rear deck is too narrow because the rear wall of the resin cockpit sits further back towards the tail, in the correct position. The kit cockpit has no rails for the seat to sit within, and it's rear wall sits more forward roughly in the position where the rails would be (if it had them that is). So the seat position is right, just not the rear wall... And therefore the rear cover is longer and fatter than it should be.

  9. Ha!

I am immune to your feeble attempts to motivate me by using shiny examples of German technical whizz-bangery!

Got a little done today... Some experiments with adding some weathering and depth to the cylinder heads. The base silver is Tamiya TS-30 spray lacquer, the brightness goes away quite a bit when overcoated with clear. Because it's only been undercoated with primer but not sanded, the surface is a little pitted and rough, and it holds dissimilar pigments well. I'm using Artist's watercolour pencils for weathering, adding heavy blobs in the areas required; allowing it to dry, and then using a different brush dipped in water to wick away the colour until only the remnants in the ridges and crevices remain.

    IMG_20201115_180102.thumb.jpg.4e121920a8507eae20089b7d912b4ba5.jpg

I'm using these Faber-Castell pencils , as I find that the AK colour pencils have a little grease in their make-up, and it tends to stain the base colour a little. That's fine for other applications, but I'm trying for a cleaner look on this motor as the airframe I intend to do was only in service for a month before being lost in combat.

  10. The new tank is up and running, with all the little salty life forms settled in and doing well. Thankfully, the old tank has been scrubbed and cleaned and many of the various lights and assemblies are being sold off to New owners.

My Wife would like to have kept the Hmahli sump but it didn't fit under the new tank unfortunately. Someone has bought it for half of what she paid for it, so she's fairly happy it's going to a new home.
