  1. Thanks for that!  I read a log earlier where someone was building both the Revell and ICM versions of the 217 (or could have been the He 111, I forget).  I think he said the details on the ICM were a bit soft on the interior as if they expected folks to add an Eduard PE kit to it, but otherwise he seemed to like the ICM kit.

I'll think more on it.  Have enough to keep me busy for a while.

  2. Thanks Gaz, and my apologies for taking up space on your log with all these questions.  I have a soldering gun but I haven't used it yet.

What did you think about the ICM kit?  I see you can get Revell/Pro Modeler kits which have lots of aftermarket (and allow you to convert the kit to different variants), but older tooling.  ICM is newer obviously and they seem to be rolling out a ton of variants.

Sorry to keep asking questions, but approximately how long/wide is the 217 in 1/48 scale?  I'm considering maybe dropping down to 1/72 as I already have some bigger kits in that scale (a couple of Pro Modeler Ju-52s and Eduard BF110s).

Holly crap that's good ! Thanks for sharing with us  !......harv :151_41_44_712.09472830013627761

Thanks Harv for the kind words.  I should have mentioned that I added some scratch details to the build like the anchor buoys and the furled sails.  The furled sails took me a good month or two just to research and experiment to find a way to get them to look in scale (trick was to reduce the size and shape of the sails by a good 2/3), and then add the additional rigging necessary for each sail.

Lots of wooden ship modelers forego sails, furled or otherwise, as typically being out of scale.  To me though, a sailing ship without sails is like a plane without wings.  I'll probably add full sails to my Charles Morgan build - the ship looks really majestic in full sail.  You can actually visit the ship in Mystic, Connecticut too which makes it an even more fun build experience.  My daughter, who was about 3 or 4 at the time we went, kept referring to it as a pirate ship :)

Mike, that’s one sweetheart, and definitely a LARGE scale model.  I don’t think there’s a person around who doesn’t appreciate the lines of a trim little brig.  The covered Quarterdeck looks unique.

The crowsfeet and the white anti fouling (no copper) hull date this, when? 1780 or so?

Well spotted!  Caldercraft dates it to 1778, and it was Admiral Nelson's first official command.  It was believed to have been captured during the American War for Independence.  Great kit to get my feet wet with wooden models - complicated enough to drive me crazy at times and come up with new colorful additions to the english language, but not too complicated that I ended up throwing it out the window or setting it on fire.

The three others I have going are a little bigger - the HMS Pegasus (Swan class 14-gun sloop), the Charles W. Morgan whaler, and what Euromodel markets as a french 40-gun frigate La Renommee, but from my research, I think it's actually a Swedish frigate named Jupiter (apparently there was an error in translation that passed through the centuries and the ship was misrecorded by the French).  I'll post finished pictures whenever that happens.  I'd post them as WIPs but they would be very dusty and filled with cobwebs.

Two other kits I have on the shelf are the Euromodel 17th century Friedrich Wilhelm zu Pferde and the Caldercraft Victory.  At some point when the kids go off to college maybe I'll have more modeling time to actually get to all these (not to mention the plastic kits that are slowly accumulating in the stash).

Very neat and lovely build. Congratulations :thumbsup2: !

As for taking time to complete a kit, 5 years is not bad compared to my standard. I have on the shelf, still waiting to be finished, a scratchbuilt 1/32 Aichi Hansa.

What is a Aichi Hansa, you may ask ? It is a Hansa-Brandenburg W. 29, licence-built in Japan in the 20s, motorised with a Hispano 300 hp V8.

I started it in 2008, before Wing nut Wings even existed and way before they released a kit of the w29. WnW is now defunct, and I still have to complete my version of the Hansa !

    Hubert

Wow very cool!  I hope you find inspiration to finish it, sounds like a really cool, unique subject.  Maybe we should race to see who can finish their longstanding build first? :)

The Gaspatch dipoles are the correct set for the Dornier.  I don't think any if them received the FuG 220 or later sets.  Just 202 and 212 which use the same aerial.

Do you happen to know if any of the Do 217 variants had the full glass nose and radar aerials?  I'd like to build one with the full glass nose, and also find those aerials really cool, but thus far haven't seen any with both.  Seems like the ones that carried the aerials had the closed lower nose.

*Edit*  Sorry, forgot you had built the 17, not the 217.  Getting all the variants confused.  I'm also looking at the Heinkel He 111 - so many cool options out there.

  6. Seeing @Clunkmeister's Speedy build on here, I thought I would post some pictures of my first (and only) wooden ship model to show that I actually do build stuff here and there.  It's the Caldercraft Brig Badger in 1:64 scale.  As proof that I'm the slowest builder on the planet, this fairly simple ship took me five years to build.  In my defense, I had three kids along the way (my oldest and twins), so that took up quite a bit of time.  Every time I see it I'm reminded that I managed to get the rigging completed during the month I was in intense pain from having shingles on my back - felt like my spinal cord was being crushed in a vice, while at the same time, the skin on my back felt like the worst sunburn I ever had times ten.

I've got three other wooden ship builds in various states of progress that I'm working on as well, though they have taken a backseat as I work on plastic models.  Eventually I'll join you guys at the 1:32 scale, I promise :)

Anyway, here it is.  Pretty happy with how it turned out for being my first.  Sorry for the pictures, I didn't have the best camera five or so years ago to take proper glamour shots.

  7. So I'm probably the slowest builder by a mile here, but I've made a little progress on the Wildcat:

    Cowl is done finally!

    IMG_0470.thumb.JPG.7c5d5ccf80d1346c686634e11042066c.JPGIMG_0469.thumb.JPG.86d8a6d45c1bdaffb183d7a386dce5f1.JPGIMG_0468.thumb.JPG.060967b421a902302db7b6b52d6f463c.JPG

    Wing stubs are on:

    IMG_0512.thumb.JPG.f4a4def82d07bbd3ac9bc7a395e670fe.JPG

Cut the access panel out for the oil tank and added some wires in the engine compartment:

    IMG_0513.thumb.JPG.908940d2d518b9e101963a9df8d0aab7.JPG

Had to repair the tail wheel that I always seem to break off on these models, and also had to scratch build a radio antenna as the other attached to the fuselage by only a small nub.  This one extends deep into fuselage and is much more secure:

    IMG_0523.thumb.JPG.9ba51900b2cbb8bd3450c5167d6d41ae.JPG

I decided to drop the flaps, so cut them out of the Wolfpack resin wings.  I had to build them back up with some plastic strip to account for the kerf of the scribing tools that I used:

    IMG_0522.thumb.JPG.5b87d02de6ade971c33f744866053fe4.JPG

I was just about ready to finally start priming, but decided I wanted to drop the ailerons too.  What a pain!  They have little stubs extending towards the front of the plane, so I couldn't just cut across with a saw.  Instead, I ended up using my micromotor with a tiny milling bit to remove them.  That resulted in more plastic strip to make sure the lines were straight and built back up some of the lost material from the milling.  I'm not quite finished but will post photos in the next installment.

    Happy holidays everyone!

That’s Tamiya King George V in 1/350.......I added the White Ensign PE to it plus all metal barrels, I dabble now and again, some very tiny PE to manipulate.......

That's a nice looking ship!  When I got back into models, I started with wooden kits because I didn't like the old insert tab A into slot B and paint by hand with those tiny Testor's enamel bottles.  Then I found out about how much things have changed in the last 30 years with PE, airbrushes, etc.  Now I've got a few in the stash (mostly IJN WWII ships).  I'm working on a 1/700 IJN destroyer at the moment with a full PE set that is doing its best to make me go blind or crazy or both.

  9. Hmm, the thought of picking up the Mustang IV and having one open and one buttoned up did cross my mind.... :)

Right now i have the P-51D, Skyraider (navy), Raiden, Shinden, and Do-335 single seater.  It's odd how some auctions you can get ridiculous deals with no bidding competition, and others, just the base kit and no AM go for crazy prices.  I've managed to scoop up a bunch of Z-M kits with almost complete Z-M AM for prices around (and often times below) kit retail.  Z-M aftermarket can add up quickly, so I look for packages that are mostly complete.  I wasn't planning on doing the Shinden, but it had all AM and the full paint set for something like $90 and free shipping :o  Figured it would be a good intro to the Z-M system.

That looks like a really cool Eduard set.  I have one of the Eduard P-39 Airacobra limited edition sets that I picked up for something like $30 - Eduard does a really nice job with them.  Otherwise, I've been picking up the Royal Class sets when I've found them for good prices.  Eduard can get pricey too if you decide to go with the Brassin upgrades.

Mike, which extras did you get? I’ll be posting some pics this week as I started a couple of weeks ago.......more the merrier....

Hey Phil, like you, I got almost a complete package on eBay for a relative steal (paid about kit retail for all the PE, wheels, gun barrels, etc.).  I did end up adding the fuel tank attachment set and the propeller attachment set.  I debated getting the oil tank exchange set like you have and/or the engine maintenance set in lieu of the fuel tank attachment set.  Might still add one or both, who knows.  At the moment I'm working on an F4F-4 Wildcat with an Aires conversion set that allows you to show off the engine compartment, and am now thinking that showing off the engine on the Z-M Mustang would be pretty sweet.  Lot of cool add-ons for this particular kit for sure.

I'm still fairly low on the learning curve, so I probably won't start mine for a couple of years in order to be able to do the kit justice.  Among [too many] other kits in the stash, I have the Eduard P-51D Royal Class box in 1/48 with a bunch of the Brassin upgrades which I probably will do first I think.
