This plane was 3 shades of gray by MRP, Lt Ghost, Dk Ghost, and Navy Blue/Gray, then I mixed a lightened color of each (+ 50% thinner) by adding white, then I also used Lt Gull Gray for the wing walk area. I used reference photos of the patterns on the movie Tomcats and also some artistic license for wear pattern on other planes. except for hard mask lines, most of it was freehand. This is about the 6th plane I painted in this manner, so it is almost second nature now. I begin by painting the middle color, DGG, then I hard mask the upper NBG, and freehand the bottom LGG. For weathering, I try to use LGG on the DGG, and DGG on the LGG, I then use both those colors on the NBG, I then go in and spray various patterns on all the colors using lightened versions of all, keeping in mind these are all corrosion control touch-ups done by small spray gun of spray cans at sea. I then finally use spray stencils to lightly spray each lightened version of each color through the stencils. finally, you step back and evaluate how it looks. If its too stark a contrast, I will go and spray the original color, diluted 10% paint / 90% thinner, over everything to mute it down. However, I did not do it on the Tomcats, as these planes looked very beat up in real life. I did do it on my A-7 I did a while back.

Recently I picked it up again as thing have allowed me to put my head above water, this work was done in about 90 minutes over a weekend. I finished and weathered the cockpit, put together most of the rear fuselage mass including wheel wells, wings, intakes, and landing gear assemblies. Next step is spraying the gear and wells, and back to assembly.

Update, my F-14A languishes in the box, needing Decals, but I had started on another back last year for a commission build, a Tamiya F-14D. However this build is getting the Quinta Studios set in the cockpit, it’s been a slow build but it’s picking up speed again, so here are some pics of it.

I am most impressed with the 109, makes me want to build another!

Tony, it’s definitely ok to spray a flat acrylic clear on them, enamel washes work, not sure about lacquers yet. I hear you can, but I never tried.

Quinta 1/48 Tamiya F-14D Tomcat

No, you use water to separate them from the paper, you need to use either PVA or CA glue to adhere them. Just like PE, but faster. The decal sheet solves an problem in 3D printing that how do you print, remove them, and not lose tiny pieces. Placing them in water, slide them off to a paper towel, the decal glue does not adhere very well, while it possible to attach them, they will probably not stay on. Some kind of adhesive is needed, I personally tried both PVA and CA, I prefer the CA (slow set) because dropping time is much faster. keep in mind, this cockpit is the width of one thumb.
