Help: Spitfire Roundel masks needed.

Recommended Posts

I started to decal my Tamiya Spitfire today and the kit decals were old and cracked as soon as I started to apply them. To make matters worse, the EagleCal decals I bought were no better and proved to be unusable, as neither of the decals would conform and settle down over the underwing blisters. This a new ground for me and the only way out is to use paint masks, as there always is a first time.

Located two sets of mask set on ebay,

I Man Army DET 041.

DN masks 2013

Either one should work. Will be ordering one of the sets by Monday.

Just seems there is always something.

The 1 man army masks have been rated highly by people who have used them especially the smaller stencil masks, I have a set for a future Revell Hurricane build.

Cheers

Like Spitfire said, the 1ManArmy masks are fantastic. I used them on two builds now and despite a lot of masking work, the results were fantastic. The stencils are very sharp and you don´t have the typical decal issues. It´s a lot of work, especially, when the stencils are multi colored.
When applying the larger roundels, 1MA recommends using transparent transfer film for placement. I would strongly recommend doing so, especially on rounded surfaces like the fuselage sides.

Agreed, sounds as if it will solve all my issues. Is there a special type of transfer tape I need to buy as a quick look at Michael's Craft Store online (I have a real Michael's a few miles from the house) and there seems to be a boatload of types.

The first time, I used cello tape, because I had no sheets of transfer foil and it worked. Now I have bought some transparent adhesive foil sheet for that case.

Change of plans and one last try with a few decal sets I found in my stash: Eduard RAF decals printed in 2016 and for the most part, they work ☺️.  Now ain't that something.
