Sounds more logical an explanation than mine. It’s a big pump for pushing a few extra drops of fuel in a carburetor.

Yes it is a Big Pump (apologies HST) !

My answer cannot be 'definitive' , all I did was follow fuel and air lines in pics and see them go to the prominent valves in the cockpit area.

As this isnt a personal build thread I can put a pic up of my IP. I researched the pump and found it to ba an air pump to pressurize the fuel tanks. I plumbed mine to the valve right near it. I believe the pilot would select the tank to be pressurized and turn the valve accordingly and then pump air into the tank , there by pushing the fuel into the feed line to the carb.

See it on the right with no handle yet and a line going under to the valve right near to it.

The backside:

I would think the bird in question here would only have a single fuel tank , so the line woud go directly to the tank.

But as I say just surmising.

So it IS in fact a primer pump, only it’s pushing fuel in the carburetor by pressurizing the fuel tank, until the actual fuel pump is activated by the running of the engine ... 

The bottom line is the tubing at the other end of the pump should go to the tank, shouldn’t it ?

No Hubert. The air pressure IS the fuel pump.

The pilot is pressurizing the fuel system manually at intervals as needed,

ie: when the engine starts to run out of fuel!!

This the genesis of fuel systems.

No pumps yet.

Later we see the prop driven , hand driven etc.

But I believe air pressure was the beginning.

I havent seen a fuel pump on a WW 1 engine yet.

But I am no expert and I dont have this kit so I cant check.

Thanks, I'm new to building WW1 kits. I would think that most of items in this era are made of Copper and Brass.

that is what I thought as well. I just want sure to were it would lead to. Direct to the engine for "static" pressure priming or for oil to circulate. My thoughts at the time was that it was for fuel priming.

 

Second, that looks GREAT!

Third, this is is what I came up with. I looks a bit better than whats in the kit I think,  I'm not sold on my handle though.
