F-15DJ Kai or Eagle Plus- Finished!

Recommended Posts

Hey, Carl. I like this build so much that I've signed up to the site! Your Anime F-15 is impressive (and large) kit bashing.

I think it would go down well on Britmodeller in the Sci fi RFI when you finish it.

Now to have a wander around on here to see what else I can find.

The Dog would probably go down well on BM too ☺️

Thanks Pete!

Welcome aboard. We're a fun group here.

If you like the dog, you should see my cat when I'm at the bench. She's often in my lap or worse, on the bench.

Time for a small update. The bench redo isn't done but I wanted to see if the YF-22 nozzles were going to work.

First thing I did was shorten them so that they had a straight panel line to join up to the Eagle fuselage. Then it was a bit of tweaking to get it closer dimensionally.

Finally a quick mockup test with tape.

The nozzles will fit the Eagle fuselage.

Topside, I'll need to blend the sides in more but it will take away the squareness of the mods I'd made earlier.

The underside will need building up to blend the nozzles in.

From the side, I was able to get the nozzles to the same height as the fuselage so there won't be a step.

Lastly, I need to add some detail to the insides of the nozzles as there isn't any.

Okay, I stopped sorting out the bench and got back to work on this. Things are packed up and in different storage tubs but I really wanted to make some progress on this build.

I cut the back of the nozzles out. First one...

...followed by the second.

I then used part of the original burner cans to add some depth.

The end result.

I think it adds a bit more visual interest even if it's not 100% accurate.

One of my least favourite parts of a jet build- filling and painting the intakes. The F-15 ones weren't too bad but would have been easier if they weren't so long. Anyways, I got them done and installed into the lower fuselage half.

I also added some styrene tabs around the sides of the fuselage as the joint doesn't look to be the strongest. They also help a lot with alignment.

One thing that seems to be systemic to 1/32 F-15 kits is the wing/fuselage join. Following the instructions, you assemble the fuselage and then add the wings. But if add the wings to the upper fuselage half first, you can tweak the fit and get a much cleaner join.

I also added some epoxy putty to the leading edges of the wing shoulders so I can drill and fit the canards easier later.

Finally, I glued the nozzles on.

Now to let things dry a bit.

Thanks Peter. I've been trying to figure out the best way to fill the various gaps and smooth out the contours.

I settled on planking the rear section and then sanding things smooth.

I've been procrastinating about the upper side contours and decided to just fill them in with Apoxie Sculpt. I've made the contour blend in smoother compared to the original version I did.

This means they extend further forward but it's less abrupt and more rounded as as result.

On the underside, I filled in the centre section and got a rough shaping done. Again, it goes further forward than it did previously.

Lots more putty work. To get an idea if I was getting closer to the desired shapes, I slathered on a thick coat of Mr Surfacer 500.

I left this to dry for a bit and then started sanding.

The topside is about there. I need to fill some imperfections but it's close.

The bottom side needs a lot more work. There's some significant voids and cavities to fill and then smooth out.
