Winnie Posted June 24 Posted June 24 This is a multi year project, I have started threads in a few maritime forums, but thought I'd make one here too. This is the progress made THIS month! So got a tiny bit completed on B deck, not much to do, 2nd class restaurant and a couple promenades. and the deck below the bridge. had to work to get the deck to fit, minor surgery. Also fitted the PE sheets for the rails on the outside bulkhead, but only the back plate, the spars will have to happen AFTER the decs are inserted. Pictures are bad, because I was in a rush... Waterways still need a dash of black there! and the ladders came off the rear bulkhead, those will be reattached shortly, with the last deck equipment needed. Shapeways bridgefront there. The doors seem very red, they look more brown in real life. Holes are drilled for portholes, and I have fiberoptic, but I'm questioning my plan to light it. we'll see, once I finish the hull, I'll have to make my mind up... Cheers! 9
FullArmor Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Nice to see ship building here too🙂. Variety for tanks and planes. 2
DocRob Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Like FA said, it´s good to see some nice ship building here. I will follow and am eager to see more. Cheers Rob 3
Winnie Posted June 25 Author Posted June 25 I'll post more shortly, I'm already well on the way on 'A' deck, just a few (A LOT) of windows to do... 3 1
Winnie Posted July 2 Author Posted July 2 I'll try to add a few pictures! A Deck, deck veneers laid down, waterways and expansion joints laid down. I've been using white glue for all of it. It's flexible enough to allow for temperature differences, and seem to hold the PE better than CA glue... She's a big lady! Still have to finish the hull plating at the stern, I will try with the metal plates again, but if that fails, I can add in the plastic plates from Midwest Model Shop. Cheers H. 5 1
DocRob Posted July 3 Posted July 3 Beautiful looking decks, H. I wonder about the CA though. For the decks white glue might be a god option, but for small PE parts? I think the white glue can´t take any strains. I use Colle 21 CA by the gallon for my metal MFH kits and used it with ships PE as well with no complaints. Cheers Rob 1

At least that's what I have found. Epoxy would be my choice, applied very sparingly. It going to ruin the wood as well, if you miss. So some kind of guide would be a good idea. Like tape. 1
Count0 Posted July 3 Posted July 3 I know one of the modern Titanic kits was rumored to have a misshapen bow? Is it this kit? if yes, any plan to correct that?

Spoke about CA gluing PE parts, that was what I was referring to. I double planked a complete wooden sailing boat, using CA. I know, wooden ship modelers often dislike CA and you have to be really careful using it, to not stain the visible side, but it works good and superfast. This is the hull, I made, there are no stains, even after finishing the wood with varnish. The golden ornate PE is also glued on with CA. Cheers Rob 4

I think that's the wooden ship, Occre or some such. I won't be doing any massive surgeries, I have a couple of Shapeways parts, like the B deck front bulkhead, that looks more correct. @DocRob I'm not using wood glue to glue PE to PE, only PE to plastic, a couple of the bulwarks had some tension due to the etching, and they are holding with wood glue, but not with CA for some reason. That was the problem with the hull-plates as well, the plates held for a bit then one edge would peel... pain in the canugies... The waterways, and expansion joints are flat pieces on flat decks with no strain, and they're holding down great with white glue. And it's easy to position, and they're flexible ish after setting, so that they shouldn't pop off... Your wooden ship is magnificent though... 1 1

Thank you, it is my first wooden ship and went rather quickly and fine, but I stalled with rigging until now. I will definitely finish the Duchess of Kingston soon. Cheers Rob 2
Winnie Posted Monday at 01:26 PM Author Posted Monday at 01:26 PM Need more medium CA... Anyway, the white glue (using Mod Podge gloss), works a charm so far. Easier clean up, and does wonders in sticking small pieces of PE to plastic. A deck structures: One door missing, the handrails are a bitch to get/keep straight... Thankfully this will be behind a bullwark on A deck, 1 deck below the boat deck. Some of these windows have the "stained glass" from the KA set... Micro cutting with very fine scissors on slippery plastic... NOT easy, but whatever! Looks really cool The most time consuming part of any, is cutting the PE from the fret, cutting the nubs, then filing the nubs... There are 44 of the smallest windows on the longest structure shown... So there are TONS of windows. But, I think this is an excellent primer to more advanced warships, because even though there is a dearth of PE parts, most are easy subassemblies requiring a single fold, if any. Or a gentle curve. So there are thousands of parts, but they're relatively easy to affix! I'll probably eat those words later. Cheers H. 4
KevinM Posted Monday at 02:08 PM Posted Monday at 02:08 PM The brass to the white looks elegant even now good work thus far. 1
DocRob Posted Monday at 07:51 PM Posted Monday at 07:51 PM Looking very good. I don´t know, if you are aware of ION Models 1/200 figures and deck furniture sets. IONION MODEL Titanic furniture set 1/200 ION20th CENT. CIVIL SHIP PASSENGERS & CREW 1/350 Cheers Rob
Winnie Posted yesterday at 01:19 PM Author Posted yesterday at 01:19 PM @DocRob, Midwest Modelshop also has some, but I'll torture myself with the brass ones, just to see... I've already sunk about $2K into this model, so we have to say somewhere that enough is enough! 1
