Rant: overzealous Dutch customs

Dutch customs know how to find me...nothing new there. (it all started when I ordered a 1/16 scale gun barrel years ago...never seen that many stamps from all kinds of security departments on a parcel before!)

I can't order anything from outside the EU without punishment it seems. Seen it...been there and payed the price before.

But now this...

A very humble online order...from my dearest Barracuda friend Roy.

A set of 1/24 109 K wheels and Uhu open cowl flaps...a meagre 39 euros altogether. I thought that surely be humble enough to stay under the radar, but no...no....I'm a terrorist for sure...had to pay 19 euros import duties to get the bloody parcel.

Geez! We're on the same side aren't we?

lol...I order a lot from Hannants...I fear the moment when I also have to pay import duties when I order something from Brexitistan

You can't get this stuff from Aviation Megastore?

Your address is probably in the system, I had that for a while with imports from Hong Kong. But what does the Douane website says is the maximum you can import tax free from the US? Look up what the rules are for scale (not RC!) models and -parts?

Well....no. They have a lot, but not everything.

Also...Aviation Megastore only has stuff with or for wings.

I love to visit them, but I dislike their webshop.

What I know...must pay 21% btw (vat) between 22 and 150 euros. Above 150 also import duties.

Looks like I payed 9 euros btw and 10 euros administration cost. So a cheap parcel is relatively more expensive, because of the administration cost.

I'll be more careful with what I order next time...and from where

Don't worry, once our glorious leaders get their way and we secede from Brexitistan and become the People's Socialist Republic of Scotland within the EU you might be able to get it from Wonderland in Edinburgh at a reasonable deal! Mind, we might all have to climb over a large pile of metaphorical dead bodies before that happens.

Sorry, too much politics. Actually, that sums up the last 2 years here in Scotland. If I didn't see or hear from another f****** politician for the next two years that would be just perfect. There are times when becoming a hermit seems like quite a good career move!

I now picture my Hannants parcel smuggled north.. over Hadrians Wall...avoiding mobs of border reivers and patrolling redcoats, passing a Highlander accompanied by Sean Connery wielding a katana and Mel Gibson with blue face paint. To make things worse...Robert Burns was a tax man.

The future route of my parcels will be full of adventures!

Not as far-fetched as it sounds...

I once had a parcel from Sprue Bros (in the USA on one side of the Pacific Ocean) shipped to me here in Australia (on the other side of the Pacific Ocean) via Bahrain! And the final Sydney to Brisbane leg took longer than the rest of the transit combined!

Your parcels would be alright by that route Rob if all our excise men were as efficient as old Rabbie Burns. He was too drunk most of the time to be very good at his job. Ah well, another national stereotype confirmed.

A Burns supper gala in Dumfries....2009 or so.

(the kilt is the Isle of Skye tartan. I own several, but this is my wife's favorite...and she's the boss   )

Great picture. I like the green & blue tartans best myself. The kilt I wear most often is Hunting Fergusson which is one of our clan tartans.

Can you get haggis in the Netherlands? Not sure about the EU rules but I know it's banned in the US as it's consideed unfit for human consumption due to the offal in it - my kids would agree, not being fans.

My parcels are routinely inspected , violated , all in the name of 'national security'.

My fav? when they drill a hole for the inspection camera , their brutally rertarded 'thought process' only allowing this to happen on the box top , right through the artwork.

Small minds with too much power.

Can't blame you Cees. We do produce some more appetising foodstuffs and also abominations like the deep fried Mars Bar, 'invented' about 20 km from where I stay. Mind you I always remember the Smurf ice-cream my son was so fond of in Amsterdam - there is no way that blue colour came from anything natural or healthy!

James, I sincerely hope you don't end up needing a passport to visit your relatives in the future depending on what our elected 'betters' come up with down the line!

This all reminds me of the great Billy Connolly line 'that you can go anywhere in the world and come across someone with Scottish blood in them other than Princes Street during the Edinburgh Festival'.
