I ran into quite the issue on the build. Totally my fault and not a design error on the part of the kit.  Unless complicating things is a design flaw. 

I was focused on making sure I got the engine bearers lined up correctly that I didn't notice that when I glued the fuselage halves on, the left side shifted. As a result, the firewall instead of lining up and being flush with the fuselage side is slightly forward. Ignore the lower wing root fairing as it's not actually glued in place. 

This is only on the left side, the right side lines up correctly. As a result, there's now a gap in the engine cowl fit. 

I've spent a couple days trying to figure out if there was a simple solution or fix but can't come up with anything. There's no way to separate the fuselage. It's on solid. I think I can either live with the gap or do it with the cowls open. 

Hopefully once I'm over my cold I can get back to this and be a bit more productive. But that really knocked the wind out of my sails. 

 

All that work should not go to waste - would it work just to have the engine exposed?  The cowls can be put to one side

Carl, It happens to all of us but it does suck to put such nice work into that beautiful cockpit and engine and then have this happen.  Sorry to see.  But I'm with you!

Thanks everyone! I haven't given up on the 109.  I had to take a step back and that short pause turned into a very long one. 

Here's the current status of the build. 

It's a crummy pic but I just wanted to show proof of life and that it wasn't part of the landfill. The wings are on and I'm going to leave the cowls off as some have suggested. Might as well show off some of that otherwise never to be seen again detail. 

So hopefully once I get some bench space I'll pick this up and cross the finish line with it.

I think a nice break will do.  You still might be surprised by the final result when finished.  I for one am not counting that out! You’ll have to add a few bits here and there but I think that’s not going to bother you.

Ah, that's the very first 109 I ever built. It's the Hasegawa G6. I did it when it first came out. It's taken quite a beating since then.

Well, going through the drawers on my bench I found a bunch of sandpaper. In the same drawer I found all the cowlings for the 109. 

It's been a while so I decided to see just how much effort would be needed to fit them. 

This is just tape and it looks like many seams would tighten up when glued in place.
