KevinM Posted October 8, 2024 Author Posted October 8, 2024 While waiting for some drying to occur on the Tempest I have just about finished the wood on the glass case.I still have to glue the four upright to the case drop some wood glue in the joints, sand and clean up.I will then be on the prow for handles up top and for the ends. 7
Landlubber Mike Posted October 8, 2024 Posted October 8, 2024 Wow, looks great! Are you doing glass or acrylic for the panes? Probably not inexpensive given the size! 1

Doing acrylic Mike was about $160 for the acrylic,$30 glue and maybe $20 wood.I still need to source out handles so something there also. 1
Landlubber Mike Posted October 8, 2024 Posted October 8, 2024 That's actually not bad at all. I have the 1/200 Trumpeter Bismarck in the stash - was worried at what that would cost me! 1

DocRob Posted June 28 Posted June 28 Are we witness of a continuation of the Scharnhorst build, Kevin? Would be great, you are by far a better model builder than cameraman . Cheers Rob 1 3

PanzerWomble Posted June 29 Posted June 29 Incredible details Kevin . Poor old Scharnhorst, sunk on Boxing Day with so many lost. Didn't stand a chance , just a last throw of the KM surface fleet to try to prove a point before Donitz took over . 2

KevinM Posted July 1 Author Posted July 1 I thought I give a small update to the build things are moving fairly well. This area was the first area I wanted to complete loading in the twin 3.7cm with water breaks and ammunition boxes completed both sides.I also added the boat and reela for the davits. This was the building and adding of the other torpedo tubes adding the binoculars not included from my 3D printed materials. The crane up front down low was scratched built was not shown at all how the crane was controlled. What you see to right cut-off was is the torpedo loader will get a better pick later. This is the forward lookout station the area of the ship I did not catch in time actually the layout for the Gneisenau the Scharnhorst was minus many partitions/walls present and way more open. The ladders you see all about the ship scaling vertical walls were all hand done by me scraping off the molded and with a 1/350 template added they measures out to 18" across. I have added the chains for the stern of the ship still need to add the wheel to the top of the box over the chain. The steps on the hull come from the PE for the 1/350 scale Japanese which memory serves me right was 24" in that scale maybe bigger. Just a look at some more 3.7cm's this area I was looking at to rail this evening for the next week or two coming up when that happen some rigging is coming into play also work from the inside out. Just the main SS lot'sa work went into this area lots I would have to dig up pics from 1 1/2 years ago the cranes need there own rigging. I think some of the best areas of the ship color wise. The anchors were much improved over the Trumpter look adding the round bar that locked the drawback then adding the the supporting chains that are actually anchored to the deck with some small thin wire like the pics depict not 100% but good enough to pass muster. Well that's all for a week or so fellas the pics are better than my movie camera action. 2

KevinM Posted July 21 Author Posted July 21 Progress is slow but staedy the first pic I have I guess what is a type of gangway that comes off the SS area not glued yet just there with the canvas covering I have to complete this in a few areas.I broke the roll off fixable A view from the rear I wanted to mount a single 20mm to the deck they are so detailed in 3D print I opened the ends of the torpedo storage and loaded a torpedo to be inserted just let it be known what all that area was used for. The kit did not supply a fixture up by the forward launch in front of the stack a column with a fire hose on top now I know why it's buried in there. A pic of the aft SS has it's railings now. The overall view I finally this week got the handles installed to the top of the case makes life so much easier and safer for handling. 4
DocRob Posted July 21 Posted July 21 Double wow Kevin, there is a lot of detail to catch the eye. Ion Models have 1/200 Kriegsmarine sailors, which would even add more detail. I used their 1/350 US sailors with my USS Arizona build and liked them a lot. Cheers Rob 1

Yea one of the fellas over at LSP mentioned that up to that point was some other company only who Mike said were very iffy...North Star I think? Thanks for looking in keep thinking rigging and I keep finding more to do.I think I will paint the tissue so as not so opaque 1
Landlubber Mike Posted July 22 Posted July 22 Beautiful Kevin! Stellar work my friend! I don’t know if North Star is still in business, but years ago I had placed an order and they stiffed me on half of it. They apologized saying it was an oversight and so I placed a small second order - stupidly - and told them they could include the missing items from first to save shipping. Then they stiffed me on that one. Ion figures are some of the best out there. I’ve only used them on 1/350 and 1/700 builds but would assume that the 1/200 ones are equally good. 1

KevinM Posted Sunday at 01:20 AM Author Posted Sunday at 01:20 AM I have been researching the rigging and to my total surprise Trumpter got something wrong on the mastThe lower yard arm was short and incorrect never check the sister ship?So I made the new one then there was these mooring lights below the upper yard the diagram was 1/200 scale so made that out of brass.I will in due time when all painted grey add drops of window clear product to the top of the cylinders inside and paint red top/white bottom. Again upon further inspection in 1943 she had 5X post jutting out from the upper observation platform for lines to go to lower decks again brass came to the aid. The cranes were rigged finally once was done the understanding was pretty good I think I got it right 2Dpics to 3D life can be misconstrued at times. I have covered all the railing on the forward SS that had canvas covering I may still go a tad darker in color? Rob you notice anything different? 2
PanzerWomble Posted Sunday at 07:54 PM Posted Sunday at 07:54 PM I admire your dedication to the detail , that lil destroyer I did a couple of years ago I did as a tip my toe in the water with 1/350 drove me nutz....the full Hood is a long way off which I feel may have to wait until I retire 😀 1
KevinM Posted Monday at 02:39 PM Author Posted Monday at 02:39 PM Thanks Guy I keep finding stuff added more to the forward mast last night and added more rafts to the back of the SS as depicted in 1943.I am mapping out the rigging in my head ATTM steel wire was supplied(black) which I will use as anchor point above were EZ line will attach to.The steel line will not sag under the stress making things look more natural. The pics are the very first with a different camera still playing also got a tripod helped alot on clarity. 18 hours ago, PanzerWomble said: the full Hood is a long way off which I feel may have to wait until I retire 😀 I think I have to go with the Bismark after this one just like that Atlantic bow and German design. 1
