Roden 1:32 Nieuport 28c1 build

Recommended Posts

Been slowly building this up since December 23, very difficult build due to poor interface between cabane struts and fuselage. Apparently many have failed to complete this model, that makes me determined to succeed. Cabane struts locate perfectly resulting in perfect alignment of wings however very difficult to secure. Adding metal pins etc is not going to work for me since it throws off wing alignment. thick gorilla glue should work and cement the outer struts 1st. VERY fragile struts! going to take some finesse. any one out there build Roden? any advice appreciated. Very nicely molded , too bad the model lacks in many other ways. I am new to LSM, hope I am posting correctly😬

Nice work and welcome to LSM. Unfortunately, I can´t help with Roden build experiences, but built some WWI kits from WNW Mikro Mir and Eduard. If there is doubt about alignment or rigidity, I always pin the struts with brass rod with my builds. With the Mikro Mir Fokker D.VIII I even substituted the struts with flattened brass tube ones, I fabricated by myself.

Cheers Rob

flattened brass tubes? perhaps K&S precision inc. metal brass strips could be a  place to purchase those?https://ksmetals.com/collections/strip  fabricating seems like a good idea. Thanks so much for your advice. WNW out of business ,I suppose there are a few models left out there from other sellers. the other manufacturers you mention definitely interest me. what was your source for the brass strips?

Hello and :1051927712:

I don’t think you will get the same result using brass strips and flattened tubes, as Rob suggested, especially in terms of rigidity. Flattening a tube is easy, by holding it in a vise, and slowly closing the jaws of the vise. Albion Alloys used to have a special jig for that, but it’s now in Unobtainium Land …

To control the thickness of the flattened tube, you can insert a much smaller diameter brass rod in the tube, and make it slightly longer than the tube. This way you will obtain constant thickness struts, and with positioning pins on top of it. To obtain for example a 3 x 1 mm strut, you should be OK starting with a 2.5 / 2.6 dia tube.

Hubert

PS: make sure the jaws of your vise are smooth, not striated. That was the interest of the AA device …

Very much like Hubert said, I used Albion slide fit brass tubes and Albion Connecto connectors for the job and flattened the tubes with inserted brass rods between wooden pieces i a vice.

I described the process here in my build thread of said Fokker.

Cheers Rob
