AOE4
Been slowly building this up since December 23, very difficult build due to poor interface between cabane struts and fuselage. Apparently many have failed to complete this model, that makes me determined to succeed. Cabane struts locate perfectly resulting in perfect alignment of wings however very difficult to secure. Adding metal pins etc is not going to work for me since it throws off wing alignment. thick gorilla glue should work and cement the outer struts 1st. VERY fragile struts! going to take some finesse. any one out there build Roden? any advice appreciated. Very nicely molded , too bad the model lacks in many other ways. I am new to LSM, hope I am posting correctly😬
DocRob
Nice work and welcome to LSM. Unfortunately, I can´t help with Roden build experiences, but built some WWI kits from WNW Mikro Mir and Eduard. If there is doubt about alignment or rigidity, I always pin the struts with brass rod with my builds. With the Mikro Mir Fokker D.VIII I even substituted the struts with flattened brass tube ones, I fabricated by myself. Cheers Rob
AOE4
flattened brass tubes? perhaps K&S precision inc. metal brass strips could be a place to purchase those?https://ksmetals.com/collections/strip fabricating seems like a good idea. Thanks so much for your advice. WNW out of business ,I suppose there are a few models left out there from other sellers. the other manufacturers you mention definitely interest me. what was your source for the brass strips?

Hello and I don’t think you will get the same result using brass strips and flattened tubes, as Rob suggested, especially in terms of rigidity. Flattening a tube is easy, by holding it in a vise, and slowly closing the jaws of the vise. Albion Alloys used to have a special jig for that, but it’s now in Unobtainium Land … To control the thickness of the flattened tube, you can insert a much smaller diameter brass rod in the tube, and make it slightly longer than the tube. This way you will obtain constant thickness struts, and with positioning pins on top of it. To obtain for example a 3 x 1 mm strut, you should be OK starting with a 2.5 / 2.6 dia tube. HTH Hubert PS: make sure the jaws of your vise are smooth, not striated. That was the interest of the AA device … 3
DocRob
Very much like Hubert said, I used Albion slide fit brass tubes and Albion Connecto connectors for the job and flattened the tubes with inserted brass rods between wooden pieces i a vice. I described the process here in my build thread of said Fokker. Cheers Rob 3

AOE4
been stalled out on the cabane struts , I do not think I am capable of scratching building struts that would look anything like the kit part. I decided to brace them externally. maybe I will fail going my own way.Airbrushing skills have improved lately, I am satisfied with the results. Thanks to all for the support. this build is trying my patience like never before.
AOE4
my rationale is that the bracing on the inside of the cabane struts would not be to obvious, I will not be winning any contests😁 I am fortunate enough to have the Super scale decals, this model is enough of a challenge.

Cheers Rob I was a bit confused on the advice given on struts, "pinning"the struts versus scratch building the struts, clear to me now?. I do not think it is possible to drill the kit struts and insert very small brass tubing (pinning?). the Roden parts are so soft and fragile, is this what is being suggested? AOE4
Further progress, I am certainly not the best model builder by any means🫤 the camo on the elavator is not perfect, need slight touchup. Very difficult to cut the pattern with an Excel swivel blade, gotta use a new blade frequently. Thanks to everyone for helping me. Camo almost finished, I cringe at the thought of airbrushing the top wing black camo😵💫 I may just skip it, its so prominent.

DocRob
6 hours ago, AOE4 said: what do you mean "pin the struts" how? drilling and inserting micro tubes? Yes, I meant drilling and inserting brass rod not tubes. i use mainly 0,5 mm brass rod for the task and glue these into the drilled holes with CA glue. If more strength is required, I use the method, I described in my Fokker D.VIII build log, using flattened brass tube with brass rod inserted. The brass rod protrudes at the ends and can be glued into the wings holes. Cheers Rob

AOE4
have not accomplished much since last post, camo nearly done. I am so worried about botching up the upper wing strut assembly, what a difficult model this is😵💫 decided to use Tamiya acrylic paint with lacquer thinner, not confident in using an unfamiliar paint that being AK interactive AFV acrylic paint.Too bad about AK as the colors are most similar to original WW1 colors.
