Yes, one of these days I’ll finish Speedy, then start on ?Hood with all AM known to mankind

I’ve got two other warships to build before I even think of buying another.  One already has a ton of AM that came with it, and the other requires an upgrade set that costs $250AUD.  I’m hoping that some day before I lose the ability to model, a 1/200 scale Hipper or Prinz Eugen gets released by somebody.

  2. Meanwhile....work on the Schachtschiffe continues  Over a year ago I attached the brass barrels to the secondary armament of the battery deck.  They look a lot better than the plastic barrels, but they didn't fit inside the barbettes.  So, I had to do some boring with the Dremel.  The holes aren't perfect as they once were.   But it's pretty hard to see...  could just be my poor vision.  I also populated the wood deck with coal chutes and bollards.  The guns are fully position-able, though most will need a dab of CA to stay at a desired elevation.  Also, you may notice that the lower deck is toned down from the original...  it was just too bright for wood that has spent any time in the weather.

  4. Hola compadres!

A couple days ago I applied the first coat of RLM 65.  Today it was the turn of the RLM 02 and RLM 71.  I know...yer sayin':  "WTF!  should be 75/75/76".  Well....  the early ones came out just as the colors were changing.  And supposedly they were painted at the unit level.  So this leaves a window to use a different scheme than the other two 190;s in my stash will receive.  Nobody knows fer sure.

The RLM 65 and 71 are MRP undilluted so far.  I'm a post-shader, so things will look different, later.  The RLM 02 is a mixture of ever-changing shades of that color, mixed from other Tamiya paints.  Here, I'm trying to use the 02 that appears a tad brown.

There is a lot to do.  I'll allow the color to dry for a day or so...  and then I can apply the rib tapes on the control surfaces.  Heh...  I have tons of WNW rib tapes.

I've noticed that their instruction manuals are available as downloadable .pdf files. I wish they'd do the same for their archive photos.

I went the hard way about it for the photos I wanted.  I took screen shots, and then cropped and saved them using MS paint.  But at least I'm covered if the site vanishes tomorrow.  I only did it for the kits I could see myself doing in the future.

  6. Personally...  I think they are gone for good.  The Molds...  who knows.  Are they in a warehouse in China?  Have they been melted down for scrap?  Will they turn up in somebody's barn in 75 years?  Who can tell.

I'm sure the web server was set up on a contract and it hasn't expired yet.  So...  get copies of those fantastic historical photos while they are still there.

  7. What deviltry is this!?!?!

How did they get coal into a warship back in the day of steam?  One big hatch and a big funnel, you are guessing?  Nope!

One bag at a time.  Through little hatches in the deck, all around the ship.  Großer Kurfürst has... I'm guessing...  like 130 to 150 coal chutes.  There are a few grouped in twos, threes, and fours.  But most are like these single chutes I've attached to a loop of blue masking tape.  As you can see I have gone about half way through cutting them from the fret.

Gaz, the site can be found here...

    Off topic, but...

For the uninitiated, the Australian Government intends to introduce legislation to enforce Social Media companies to start paying for third party news content they link to on their sites... Much like an advertiser paying a Musician if they want to use their song as a Jingle in an advertisement. Google initially threatened to limit their search functions here; then once they realised that half the mobile phones in the country run Android, chose to negotiate directly with news organisations before the legislation goes through.

However, Facebook this last Thursday, disabled all news content to Australia on their site... Local, international, anything with "news" or "information" in the title or 'About' blurbs... Completely shut those sites down. This also managed to disable sites run by Charities, Utilities, Government and Local Councils, Emergency Services, random Businesses, Community Groups and private sites. It's all-encompassing, yet completely random in some cases. For instance:

Want to search Facebook for a book about Luftwaffe subjects?

    IMG_20210220_104706.jpg.af31c3890577c430544f4614a5bedb46.jpg

    Chandos site = good.

    Jochen Prien = bad.

I've got some news for Mr. Zuckerberg that he won't have to pay for. You're going the right way for a smacked bottom.

    S

Now that is confusing.  Some sites that show lots of Luftwaffe planes are getting hammered for Swastikas.  I've been waiting for the Facebook police to kick me for some of my model images.

  9. With Tender care, using the back edge of a knife, and my one very fine razor saw blade I was able to detach the kit gear covers without stuffing them up.  Yesterday I devoted some time to trying to find period photos.  I found a couple as well as some pics from a restored bird.

Both sets were different which causes me to believe that either different versions were made of these covers, or that the ones on the restored bird are wrong.

Anyway...  you can see my results.  I milled them using my Dremel and the round holes, a pin vise and drill bit.  They are glossy because I gave them a coat of Tamiya extra thin to smooth out the places I can't.  The black stuff is black CA where I accidentally went through with the Dremel.

    I completely agree Gaz...

Facebook is a fantastic tool for gathering information. Where else could you see the exact layout and contents of the starboard storage container on a Sd.Kfz.250 Neu?

It's just a pity that Facebook is behaving like tools here in Australia at the moment.

Hey mate, how do I find this on FB?  I have this kit by Dragon and any details will of course be most useful.

    Same here...

You are all missing out.  For, in between of the useless twaddle and Facebook irritations, people in your groups will submit thousands of photos you have never seen before, many of which are useful modelling references.  Since joining FB over 2 years ago, I've collected thousands of images that will aid me in modelling.

Avoiding FB is like walking past a library in the 1970's and saying that there are too many other books in there which will prevent you from finding what you want.
