Playing in the Sandbox Group Build Sept 1, 2024 - Jn 1, 2025

Recommended Posts

Encountered a small wing fit issue.

The connector pin is floating in mid air. Don't force it down, this will result in a wrong rear edge and it won't be possible to fit the flaps.

Best cut off this pin....and the one for the outer upper wing next to it. Replace with a stack of Evergreen to support both.

solved :)

Apart from this, I'm impressed with the very good fit of the wings and the way they build up. Good job Revell!

Thanks!

Not much to show right now :sofa:

Busy with the final touches before I can throw some paint on.

Filling, sanding, filling, sanding, polishing, cleaning...stuff like that.

Modified the drop tank a bit. Cut off the too short and unnaturally straight fuel lines and replaced them with brass rod.

And scratched the tensioners on the centre band.

Slowly getting somewhere...note to self: sand off rib tapes near the wing tips a bit.

By the way...easy way to beef up the beules:

Glue them on a thin sheet of Evergreen and sand off the edges. Give them 3 or 4 coats of primer (I love Tamiya rattle can primer)...rescribe seam...and another 3 coats of primer. This will be enough, no aftermarket needed

More soon

Hello people!

Another minor update...just to show I'm not slacking

Some setbacks last week. The tube light of my favorite magnifying lamp died. Since it's a rare T4 it took some effort to find a replacement. I'm legally blind without :(

On top of this my airbrush started to blow bubbles in the paint cup...no idea what causes it. Cleaned it...took it apart, but she needs to see an airbrush doctor. I can't figure it out.

Nonetheless...I made some progress.

Finished painting the wheels, finished the prop and the plane is ready for painting.

g14-14_zpseaa3943e.jpg

The  Revell prop is a somewhat strange construction...not my fav part of the kit for sure.

I scribed the missing seam between the backing plate and the hub and added some detail to the base of the prop.

Wrapped a thin strip of Evergreen around it...better then nothing I spose.

The hub swirl was a pain to apply. Buckets of Micro Sol needed to get it half right.

I will be away from my desk for 10 days now...some R&R on Lanzarote with my better half.

We have WiFi there, so I can check the forum :)

Okey...must pack my suitcase now...cya soon!

"The hub swirl was a pain to apply. Buckets of Micro Sol needed to get it half right".

I ALWAYS have trouble with those, and always have to slather on setting solution.

GREAT build so far...can't wait to see the finished product!

Done that.

Still need to sort out my airbrush issue, nozzle and needle seem fine.

Returned from my vacation last night, Next week I'll go to Almere to get her checked.

My H&S Evolution is over 10 years old now, perhaps it's time to get a new one.

Still hope they can fix it...I got rather attached to her :(

I have some heart burn with the different spinner spiral decals and find that any decal from Aeromaster or Kits-world behaves rather well. it also helps me to cut them accordingly for the fit. When I feel like  a challenge I go for the big kahuna and paint one.. Love the Job so far it is really a sweet build.

That's really the easiest way to do it.  I was initially a little intimidated by masks but now I dread using decals, you screw up and you're looking at buying a new sheet.  With masks it's just try again.

Really nice looking build. I've heard positives/negatives about this kit. So far, it seems you are just motoring through it without a whole lot of frustration or difficulty...I guess modeling is a lot like life--nothing's perfect and overcoming difficulties is the name of the game.

Keep it up. This is promising...

  • 9 months later...

And...1 year later

Got side tracked "a bit", but finally finishing the 109

IMG_0182_zps15e2fc6a.jpg

slammed on most of the paint, some of the decals...will be done within a week now....honestly!

Read about the Spit GB, since I just received  the Revell MkII, I guess that will be the next one.

Hope it won't take me another year to finish that one

btw...is there an after market spit prop for that kit? The Revell Spit prop looks very wrong imho

ty..just airbrushed the space between the white of the top wing decals to get rid of the silvering there.

I use the Tamiya (a spin off....no name brand....much cheaper) tape for masking decals. Before I apply the tape I stick it to the palm of my hand a few times.

Will make it less sticky, so I won't peel off the decal when I remove it afterwards. (done that before...trial and error thing)

The decals are a mix of Revell, Kagero, Barracuda and TechMod.

I wasn't too happy about it all after I did the two tone mottling. It all looked very dark and moody, but I followed the Kagero scheme.

The decals make a big dif (phew!). The guy who sprayed this plane had plenty of paint and he made sure to use it all.

He covered (completely or partly) many of the stencil markings, part of the national markings on the sides and the lower part of the fuselage band.

Luckily the fuselage band, the blue 11 and wave gives it a nice look. Still...I won't choose such a dark scheme for my next 109

Next will be: more decals, landing gear and the few missing bits and bobs.

After that...some touch up work, rigging and weathering. One week...max!

Funny...it was 3 days work from where I left it a year ago to where I am now.

More on sunday :)

@Jeroen.
No, I didn't...Klear is still one of those mystical newish inventions I still have to try.
Until then, I mask the decals and airbrush again... or cut them to the very edge before I apply them.

I started building models long before Woodstock, but I quit shortly after Peter Gabriel left Genesis.
Still some catching up to do...and I'm a slow learner. I try my best to make a model look okey but I don't seek the level of perfection I see here more often then not.

But...slowly learning. like preshading....
