ScottsGT Posted September 30, 2023 Share Posted September 30, 2023 So a few weeks back my son came to town and took a look at the paint condition on my 2015 Mustang and shamed me. Yea, it’s been looking rough. Slight oxidation on the clear. Since the weather has changed from “go outside and die” heat to “ok, you’re gonna get swampass but you’ll live to talk about it” heat, I decided it was time to do something. Went to a gun store that also sells car detailing chemicals. Guy looked at my car and made some recommendations to the tune of $100. And told me if the clay rag won’t clean the surface, get some iron deposit remover. Yep. Back at the store today getting iron remover. So far I’ve spent the day washing, iron removal and clay ragging it. Planning on starting the buffing tomorrow. Then I noticed something falling on the car and could smell smoke in the air. Yep. One of my distant neighbors is burning yard debris and it’s falling out of the sky on my freshly washed car. 😡 Car cover on for the night. I’ve read you should do this to all new cars since they are delivered by rail. Trains throw up all kinds of tiny iron dust particles just from iron wheels riding on iron rails. But you spray it on and let it stand for 5-8 min and it will turn purple from the iron dissolving. Of course it was impossible to see on my almost purple car. I was amazed at how much of the tiny grit I was feeling in the paint surface was iron deposits. Even after washing, clay rag and iron dissolver, my dry compound was coming off the car black on the microfiber rags. I look at what corvettes go for in the States and weep , same money here buys really mediocre stuff . Some of the Jags are fun , but most stuff is well beyond the average Jo's budget . Mind you our government is obsessed with getting older cars off the the road for some goddam reason . Just an announcement they are looking into how much these cars are driven per year. Sending out questionnaires to registered owners of cars around 1974 and older. Pretty damned sad when you think of it. The place the American car culture was born and nurtured is now trying to kill it off. Of course we all know those billionaire car guys at places like Pebble Beach Concourse de Elegance shows and Jay Leno will get exceptions while the guy working his ass off to pay his bills and spending late nights and weekends in his garage will be the ones to get shafted. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Front end is loose like grandpa’s shorts, I have a whole bunch of electrical issues, steering pump whines like Russian conscripts so as the fuel pump. In short, lots of work ahead. But the performance times are over, now I'm going to discard the Griggs torque arm and heavy coilovers for a cushy ride. It's never gonna be as comfy or fast as my S550, but it's not supposed to be. It is an overgrown ford Escort, based on lack of logic, aesthetics and reason. Rachael wants to keep it, so be there. If it was up to me, I would torch it and send it to Russia. Talking about brakes, when I first took a closer look at them on my '91 Beat, I noticed the front rotors are smaller than the rears. Which is opposite of what you usually see. The rears are the same as the fronts on a 5th gen Civic but the fronts are specific to the Beat. That was the right approach , small and light. to put V8 into weak fox platform, with underpowered brakes and whiny transmission was recipe for disaster. Not talking about complete design turn from the classic mustang pedigree. OK , I'm grumpy and tired tonight. Slow? Just handle bad? Yea, keep in mind it’s one of those “old cars” that will never be as nice and ride as nice as your S550 did. But there’s a bit of nostalgia to those old go cart suspensions. Sometimes a good stock suspension with just a set of progressive springs and quality shocks and struts is all a car needs. It was way before people considered taking mustangs anywhere else than 1/4 mile. You can not polish a turd 100 grand later I decided to civilize it, removed the cage and Heim joint suspension, moved the battery back under the hood and the bench went back, same as the carpets and seatbelts. Talking about S550, I got bored by it super fast. My wife sees the light at the end of the tunnel, I see the tunnel only. You know what I am craving as an automotive enthusiast ? A project like Jeep TJ Unlimited, or old Land Cruiser. Or even S197 Bullitt would do. or 3rd/4th. generation Vette. Cars with character. Remember the suspension issues with the ‘79 when it was first released? Easy to roll over. Ford knew this was a problem, did nothing about it. Typical Ford. Right now they are under investigation by the NTSB since they have more recalls than any other mfgr. My brothers college buddy is now a paraplegic because of this. Car went off the road, flipped and he was thrown through the sunroof and his back hit the rear spoiler and severed his spine.
