Just saw a 1969 MGB plugged in at an EV charger. It had a full electric conversion which had been done in Australia. The way of the future?

The person responsible should be plugged into 240V & 65Amps.....feckin eejit.

If he needed to  "signal" he should buy one of those nice Chinese EV made by children in factories with no windows and that doesn't appear on Google earth .

So a few weeks back my son came to town and took a look at the paint condition on my 2015 Mustang and shamed me.  Yea, it’s been looking rough.  Slight oxidation on the clear.
Since the weather has changed from “go outside and die” heat to “ok, you’re gonna get swampass but you’ll live to talk about it” heat, I decided it was time to do something.  Went to a gun store that also sells car detailing chemicals.  Guy looked at my car and made some recommendations to the tune of $100.  And told me if the clay rag won’t clean the surface, get some iron deposit remover.  Yep. Back at the store today getting iron remover.

So far I’ve spent the day washing, iron removal and clay ragging it.  Planning on starting the buffing tomorrow.  Then I noticed something falling on the car and could smell smoke in the air.  Yep. One of my distant neighbors is burning yard debris and it’s falling out of the sky on my freshly washed car.  😡

Car cover on for the night.  I’ll post up pics after I get all the polishing done.

It dissolves iron fallout contamination. Particles of iron in time can get into the pores in your paint and start corroding. This time of oxidation can affect the finish.

This.  Comes from many sources.  I’ve read you should do this to all new cars since they are delivered by rail. Trains throw up all kinds of tiny iron dust particles just from iron wheels riding on iron rails.
But you spray it on and let it stand for 5-8 min and it will turn purple from the iron dissolving.  Of course it was impossible to see on my almost purple car.
I was amazed at how much of the tiny grit I was feeling in the paint surface was iron deposits.

Even after washing, clay rag and iron dissolver, my dry compound was coming off the car black on the microfiber rags.
I’m going to buff it again this spring.

Life too short for clay barring anything ..really nice pony car though 👍:)

We have have very few decent classic cars in the UK beyond "classic English sports car" , which is fine if you're ok with a small rusty car and a 100 BHP engine .

I look at what corvettes go for in the States and weep , same money here buys really mediocre stuff  . Some of the Jags are fun , but most stuff is well beyond the average Jo's budget . Mind you our government is obsessed with getting older cars off the the road for some goddam reason .

My wife lived in Mass in the 1990's and used to run old beaters, her favourite being a 4th gen Mercury Cougar she bought for $300 and ran through two winters .

California is working hard to do the same with the vintage car culture. Just an announcement they are looking into how much these cars are driven per year. Sending out questionnaires to registered owners of cars around 1974 and older.
Pretty damned sad when you think of it. The place the American car culture was born and nurtured is now trying to kill it off.  Of course we all know those billionaire car guys at places like Pebble Beach Concourse de Elegance shows and Jay Leno will get exceptions while the guy working his ass off to pay his bills and spending late nights and weekends in his garage will be the ones to get shafted.

Yeah odd how politicians seem to work as if it's their ideas that matter - not the people who elect and pay for their fat asses. Oxford near me is working hard to ban cars altogether  to make it easier for Chinese students to cycle around whilst taking all out science back to their corrupt regime .

  • 2 weeks later...

I’m IMG_1401.thumb.jpeg.aac5342845134015dab4701c8cccf771.jpegAfter more than a decade I pull this turd out of storage and had the “out of province” inspection done.

now for the hard part. Front end is loose like grandpa’s shorts, I have a whole bunch of electrical issues, steering pump whines like Russian conscripts so as the fuel pump. In short, lots of work ahead. I’m probably 8 grand away from a decent ride.

Yay. :)

The 5 lug conversion was stolen from the later model SN 95 (93-04) gen. Mustang. So as the brake system. But the performance times are over, now I'm going to discard the Griggs torque arm and heavy coilovers for a cushy ride.

It's never gonna be as comfy or fast as my S550, but it's not supposed to be. It is an overgrown ford Escort, based on lack of logic, aesthetics and reason. Rachael wants to keep it, so be there.  If it was up to me, I would torch it and send it to Russia.

Oh and I'm gearing down to 3.55s as well,.....  in my eyes , capital waste of money.

The first gen Mustang SVT had 5 bolt hubs as well.

Talking about brakes, when I first took a closer look at them on my '91 Beat, I noticed the front rotors are smaller than the rears. Which is opposite of what you usually see. The rears are the same as the fronts on a 5th gen Civic but the fronts are specific to the Beat. The only thing I could come up with is that they're that way because the car is mid engined.

Yes indeed SVO Mustang in the eighties had a fife lug and a small 4-cylinder turbo. That was the right approach , small and light. to put V8 into  weak fox platform, with underpowered brakes and whiny transmission was recipe for disaster. Not talking about complete design turn from the classic mustang pedigree. OK , I'm grumpy and tired tonight. LOL

The thing about Beat is its weight distribution and the way how they adjusted the brake bias. Brilliant little machine.

What’s up with those fenders?  Are they some kind of wide body fenders?  Or home made wide body?
Load that front end up with Steeda goodies.  Fox bodies are some really nice cars done right. Well worth putting the money into.

Meyers racing  flared fenders, rear is flared as well. 90+ hours in the body work. front end is loaded so as the rear. still turd :)

Please define “turd.”  Now of course I mean in the use of it with your car, not what a turd really is.  Slow? Just handle bad?
Yea, keep in mind it’s one of those “old cars” that will never be as nice and ride as nice as your S550 did.  But there’s a bit of nostalgia to those old go cart suspensions.
Sometimes a good stock suspension with just a set of progressive springs and quality shocks and struts is all a car needs.  My old ‘95 convertible had Eibach progressives and the blue kokico struts and rode like a dream.

Scott I spend about 20 years modifying this thing and racing it on the track. It was way before people considered taking mustangs anywhere else than 1/4 mile. You can not polish a turd :)

100 grand later I decided to civilize it, removed the cage and Heim joint suspension, moved the battery back under the hood and the bench went back, same as the carpets and seatbelts.

Talking about S550, I got bored by it super fast. My wife sees the light at the end of the tunnel, I see the tunnel only.

You know what I am craving as an automotive enthusiast ? A project like Jeep TJ Unlimited, or old Land Cruiser. Or even S197 Bullitt would do. or 3rd/4th. generation Vette. Cars with character.

Aesthetics of the fox body generation can be described in one picture

Wow!  You have been up and down the road with that one a few times.  Remember the suspension issues with the ‘79 when it was first released?  Easy to roll over.  Ford knew this was a problem, did nothing about it.  Typical Ford.  Right now they are under investigation by the NTSB since they have more recalls than any other mfgr.

My brothers college buddy is now a paraplegic because of this.  Car went off the road, flipped and he was thrown through the sunroof and his back hit the rear spoiler and severed his spine.  He’s now an attorney and a judge.
