Roger's Large Scale RAAF/RAN Research thread

Yeah ... I noticed that after I replied - on about the 3rd read through ... I turned 50 last year - brain isn't as sharp as it used to be! ... I looked up the Tamiya website ... rattle cans and lacquer jars only ... which raises an interesting question ... Thanks for the paint standard designation ... I knew it had to be something like that. As for the paint ... I started using acrylic's years ago because i hated the preparation, clean up and lingering smell of enamels - an added bonus was that the paint dried really quickly too. So what's different with lacquers?? are they stinky oily things that take forever to clean up after or are they more like acrylic's?? Tell me about it ... They were the kings of 1/35 before Dragon started turning it on - so why don't we have a designated RLM colour range (instead of random colour names)? ... I hate the thought of having a mixed set of different branded paints ... it'll get confusing ... BUT ... I'm beginning to like Carl's suggestion of Mr.Hobby's acrylic's more and more - it's not the first time the suggestion has come up ... I'm thinking that might be the way to go - phase Tamiya out and replace with Mr.Hobby. Rog -

Ok fellas ... thanks again ... For the Hornets ... In respect to the actual colours used: Smitty has a point, so because the "Hornets Down Under" book is due to arrive here sometime next week and it might have references to any paint changes - I'll put that on hold .. Although I did note that Mr.Hobby acrylics have the FS numbers, Carl - are these some sort of U.S. or N.A.T.O standardised thing?? I'm officially redesignating the "British Standard" paint listing for the RAN Skyhawk as "Bull S$#@" ... as no model paint seem to be available in that colour... If I can find a local stockist of that brand that carries a full range of colours I might take a photo of a Google searched swatch and just go try to match. Tamiya MUST have something though ... because they produce F-15s, 16s etc ... all of them are grey! Rog -

Hopefully Ern is going to amalgamate my Aussie A/C threads into one ... so instead of creating a new thread - I'll stick this bit in here. Again ... because I'm totally new to this jet thing I'm a little stumped on paint ... I use Tamiya Acrylic's ... I don't mix (at least SUPER rarely) - I tend to find the nearest colour to what I'm after and just go with that one ... That being said: these colour call outs a diving me silly!! ... Help? Rog -
So ... My Aussie Decals arrived for the Trumpeter A-4E er G and the F/A-18.B Rog

I had the same crap happen when I ordered the Ho.229 book ... and others on Amazon ... and then the vendor wants to know why I won’t give 100% on the feedback score!! Rog -
... Ok Dale ... I'm not going to comment on just how utterly suspect THAT looks!! ROFLMAO! Rog

Yeah ... thats what I was thinking while looking at them ... I've had other input that says the front IP was the same B to D ... but that the rear was completely different - early or late ... Meh! ... As long as the layout is vaguely familiar ... in '32 scale? ... She'll be right - Mate! ... I decided to wait until the kit actually arrives and I can flick through the sprues myself before I look at resin ... Meanwhile I e-Bayed a new reference book ... some of the pics and text look to be interesting ... and hopefully it'll highlight the differences between Aussie birds and anything out in the rest of the world. Rog -
Excellent ... so no additional charges beyond what I would have paid via the debit card! Decided to take the punt yesterday and attach it to PayPal ... bought gear from Spruebrothers. Thanks all for chipping in!! Rog

Ok ... Just to be safe I might pull the trigger on the Avionix set ... unless Wolfpack do one ... having an extra set of vertical stabilisers never did anyone any harm I suppose!! ... question IS though, which IPs does the resin kit have?? ... Thanks for your input again mate! Rog -

Smitty ... You, Sir ... are a champion!! I think I get all of that! ... even though you've given me the simple version! To clarify ... I just ordered the D (Bats) kit from Sprue brothers ... along with some GT intakes (and some for my other A, F and G kits). I also ordered some Decals off e-Bay as below: Of the F/A-18B's ... I'm looking to do the top one - 3rd Sqn. Darwin, March, 1988 ... So from your notes - I'm looking at the early (pre upgrade) version with analogue IP's? ... Front and rear should be basically the same as they are a trainer format ... and these IP's Should be included in the box? ... So the Avionics 'B' cockpit and tails is probably preferred but not necessary? Rog -

To build an RAAF twin holer ... I have a spare A kit - so theoretically the vertical stabilisers are covered ... my question is more cockpit related ... Can I utilise the kit parts to make the B cockpit or do I HAVE to shell out for the resin conversion?? Also is there any notable external differences between the B and the D that will be glaringly obvious in '32 scale?? Thanks in advance Rog -

HELP?!?!? I have an Academy F/A-18.D inbound ... Do I need to drastically alter the twin cockpit - or can I retain the kit parts for a 'B' Rog -
At the moment ... all ZM kits are for the collection - except for those in the stash with multiple kits ... of which i have a couple. I have kits SWS-01 - 14 and 17 ... The 2 new Skyraider kits are 15 & 16 and I have to wait until they arrive at the store so I can grab those ... Once I have those in the stash I can maybe look at getting another Hs.129B-2 to build. Rog

The Hs.129B-2 Finally arrived at one of my local (Australian) hobby stores ... So ... having it sent, along with a couple of other ZM kits they held back for me - It arrived at the post office a day or two ago. I'd like to say that I'm now up to date with the entire 1/32 ZM collection ... except they sneakily tucked another couple of Skyraider kits in before the first of the Hs.129 kits. Never mind ... as soon as those rock up to one of my other suppliers ... I'll be sorted ... Rog

Hi all ... Up until now I've had my bank account directly linked to Paypal ... I use PayPal to purchase and money is withdrawn from my account. If I link up a Credit Card ... How does the PayPal transaction effect the Credit Card ... is it treated like a cash advance or do you get the normal interest free "Purchase" period ... Since PayPal is doing the foreign currency conversion ... would the Credit Card be debited in local currency or would I get slapped for international fees also? Rog

Dunno about wet transfers ... Where's me freaking A-20G FFS ... second comings gonna happen before I get the Ba%$#@d!! Rog

Okie dokie ... I guess I could even spank out a Tamiya kit in that time frame!! ... John could probably build 20 although he's taking the leisurely stroll with that Tamiya Mossie!! ... Yeah ... but we need a kick off date ... and a closing date ... So let us know when you're going to be ready to go ... Rog

Awwww ... that really is a sexy scheme Carl ... BUT ... I shall resist ... for now ... maybe! I'm going to try to keep the markings to simple operational schemes where possible ... Of aircraft that are/were either deployed in action or on active standby. If that means Camo - it will be Camo ... NMF ... Plain ol' grey over grey over more grey with a just a dash of grey to mix it up a bit ... then that's what I'll be going for. Some of the insignia are special ... My A will most likely be the decals supplied in the box it has a Collingwood Football Club magpie on the vertical stabilisers!! If I DO get a chance to build another A (Depends what AM I get for the incoming D to B conversion?) ... I MAY just take the punt! Rog -
Revell Bf-110. Anyone know this kit? Thoughts?
Artful69 replied to Sir Desmond Glazebrook's topic in Modelling Discussion
I'll add to that irony ... Frontline are selling the Revell boxing of the Dragon for $150 ... They are selling Dragons most recent boxing of the C-7 for $130 Ern ... That instruction sheet itself is now legendary ... It came on the first edition/release of the C-7 kit ... all over the place like a mad woman's breakfast ... You are quite correct in that Brett Greens "Erata" download also became legendary at the same time. One thing about Dragon that you can give them credit for - and other large production manufacturers should take note of ... when the "community" draws their attention to an error (shape, panel lines, rivets etc) ... they'll usually have a good crack at fixing the issue! ... such was the effort with the instruction sheet for the Bf.110 and therefore subsequent boxings of variants - and indeed, re-releases of the C-7 had the amended sheet. It is always good to refer to the erata sheet, though ... just in case you've snagged and earlier edition from somewhere ... Revell's instructions for the kit, I believe, have been checked and certified as "ok" by the community. Of course one particular episode in Dragons history where feedback was completely ignored was with their P.51-D ... Maybe they saw the Tamiya and ZM offerings and thought the effort wasn't worth the competition? Rog
