BlrwestSiR
So after getting the lower hull painted, I realized it was the wrong part. I needed to paint the front half of the lower hull to continue assembly. So I got to work on the correct section. Then I could install the assembled inner sections. I then assembled the lower jawbox. The first of the LEDs goes onto this bit. Then it's attached to the lower hull. The front and rear halves can now be joined together. Both mandibles can be added at this point. It's starting to get big. ZM 109 for size reference. Now onto the side panels and upper hull. The "hallway" is more of an optical illusion for the end of the ramp. AHHHH. Ok, got it! Thanks. How is the new job location working out? 3
BlrwestSiR
Chris, we're still at the store for now. It closes Christmas Eve and then we're spending January packing it up and getting ready to move it for Feb 1.
DocRob
The Falcon is looking great, but the ME-109 is no match or have I missed something about it entering hyperspace ? Cheers Rob 1

Peterpools
Carl Some mighty good looking progress - just love the weathering you're doing and the Millenium Falcon really is HUGE. Just placing the 109 on top, is a great size comparison. 2

BlrwestSiR
There's two docking rings on either side of the hull. They're each 16 pieces that need to be assembled. Again, I painted them first. One side completed. Installed into the hull.its just slips in place. No glue required. The Falcon has some battle damage moulded into the hull. I painted the area around it first. I then installed the internal detail piece so it's not a blank hole. Hopefully more tomorrow. 9

Chris, that's a good question which I don't have a great answer to. I sort of put them where I can. Case in point, the Bronco Type XXIII I finished a couple years ago sits above our TV. I've got plans for a new display case but can't start on that until the spring when it's warmer. The plan is to build something big enough for the four engine heavies and other oversized models.
Peterpools
Carl Super work on the awesome details - they look so good. Not sure if you were kidding about the 109 or that it's headed to the SOD - surely hope not? Negotiating display space hasn't always been easy as we moved a few times over the years. I'm lucky and happy to have a nice area in the house for my display case and the limits of what I can build is limited to making sure the model will fit in it. My studio is for both building and photography and there just isn't any space for an additional display case. At 75, being a realist, just trying to build what's in the stash is a goal and all the kits I've purchased should fit. Looking forward to seeing your new display case for the heavies this spring. 3
KevinM
Well Carl when I built my case it was about $200 Oak and about $400 glass now that's S. of the border to You.I would think for 1/32 heavies you are looking at maybe 24/26" D and still at an angle on there placement inside. The Falcon is coming along Nicely I bought a few months back a 1/72 X-wing(?). Love the build, and I'd be delighted to try my hand at it, but I just cannot afford the kit! 3

BlrwestSiR
I thought I'd get more done over the Christmas break but even though I was off, we were busy with family stuff. I finally got the cockpit done. This was mostly applying various decals over some well detailed panels. I had to use a lot of decal solvent to get them to conform. I then painted the figures. I decided to use the crew layout from when the Falcon escapes from the Death Star. This puts Leia and Chewbacca up front, Han and Luke in the gunner seats. To fill the rear seat, I added C-3P0. The rear panel of the cockpit door I felt was a bit too deep to cover easily with the decal so I cut that part of the decal out and painted it. I oddly don't have any pics of the finished panel. Whoops. Finally I painted the canopy after masking it off. At this point, I found a clear stand I'd bought for the Fine Molds Falcon. The fit isn't perfect but it does hold the model so I might use it. 3
BlrwestSiR
I painted the recessed bays on the upper hull and added them. The cockpit tube was finished and then I attached it to the upper hull. I then finally added the upper hull to the lower assembly. It's really starting to look like the Falcon. I also got the upper jawbox painted. Edited January 5, 2023 by BlrwestSiR Missed text 9
Peterpools
Carl Amazing work and the figures - WOW ... surely brings back memories especially of the days before even VCR's that meant numerous trips to the movies to watch Star Wars with my son. The Falcon does look so good on the stand.
BlrwestSiR
Thanks Peter. The dynamic pose on the stand is what made me decide to use the figures. The kit stand is fairly static and just holds the model level. I only saw the movie a couple times in the theatres. The first was on a school trip. The second was when they re-released it with the two sequels and did a marathon showing of all three back to back.
Peterpools
My wife and I took my son to the movies more times then we can remember and when the third episode was released, we sat in the movies and watched all three back to back. Great memories for sure.
DocRob
Great work Carl, I like the figure painting as well. Cockpit and the hull sections look good also. Hopefully they sealed the Jagdpanther properly. Cheers Rob 2

Cheers Rob Rob, that's been one of the fun parts of the build: trying to identify the various kit parts they used in building the original filming model. Lots of tank parts and F1 car bits too.
BlrwestSiR
@DocRob, here's the Jagdpanther hull. This is the engine deck for an M48/M60. An F1 transmission half With the main hull finally done, I started on adding the small details onto the model. These are called greeblies in the SF model world. Looking at the instructions, I realized I was page 30 at this point with another 20 to go. Yeeesh. 7
Peterpools
Awesome progress and I had to go back and read Robs comments to figure out what you guys were referring to. Once the lightbulb went off, it's amazing how they incorporated parts from other kits as details on the Falcon. 1
BlrwestSiR
Peter, if you can find pictures of the ILM workshops from when they were working on the films, they look like hobby shop warehouses. They'd have tens of copies of the same models so they could take parts from them and use them to detail the filming miniatures. Lots of Tamiya kits of tanks, ships, F1 cars you name it. There are guys who made it a mission to identify the various kit parts and find them in real life. Very different from these days where it's all done in a computer. A completely different set of skills.
