Kotare Spitfire - Any News?

Haven't received any updates. With Chinese New Year having been on Sunday, I suspect the earliest they'll be ready to leave is in 3-4 weeks. Much of Asia shuts down for the New Year celebrations and stays closed for up to 3 weeks which I found out when I lived in Taiwan back in '93.

One nice thing to make the wait worthwhile, if you pre-ordered the kit directly from Kotare, they're now throwing in a set of 3D printed exhausts as well as a copy of the box art.

Thanks Carl for the update - never knew about the Chinese New Year celebration lasting that long.

Peter, it's the most important celebration of the year especially for the Chinese. Just about every business closes down so their staff can go home. A couple hundred million people in China alone travel to be with family and it's truly insane to see. Think of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's all rolled into one.

Hi Peter!

This is the email I received from Richard Alexander on the 15th of December, looks like the delay is due to a few quirks they wanted to address before it's release:

Hi,

Thank you again for your pre-order and support (and patience). It really is greatly appreciated.

As an additional reward for your support, we have added a free gift of 32P001 Kotare 1/32 Spitfire Mk.Ia (Mid & Late) 3Dprint exhausts (value US$12.99) for each K32001 Kotare 1/32 Spitfire Mk.Ia (Mid) you have pre-ordered. This is in addition to the exclusive free Darryl Legg box art print suitable for framing.

Back in September 2021, when we announced K32001 Kotare 1/32 Spitfire Mk.Ia (Mid) was going to be available before the end of 2022, we were pretty sure that this timeline would work out OK. And it very nearly did. But unfortunately it didn’t. Numerous factors have contributed to this, but the main ones are:

1 - The final pre-production samples showed up a few areas that we felt we needed to improve (mostly fit, but some details) before we considered it good enough to release, because you deserve nothing less than the very best quality model that we can provide. Unfortunately, this took a lot longer than we expected.

2 - Various Covid related delays in China which have had some surprising affects to the supply chain etc. In particular is has proven a lot more difficult to get the high quality Cartograf decals delivered from Italy to the factory in China.

3 - The pre-order response (and the response from our international distribution partners) has proven to be even more enthusiastic than we expected. This is a good problem to have, but the result is a much larger production run than we initially planned for, and this in turn takes a lot more time.

For all these reasons it now looks like K32001 Kotare 1/32 Spitfire Mk.Ia (Mid) pre-orders will not now be available to ship until February/March 2023. The biggest deciding factor in whether it will be February or March will be how much production can be completed before China closes down for Chinese New Year in mid-January. We hope you will understand.

Please note that because you placed your pre-order through www.kotare-models.com, you are assured to be one of the very first people in the world to receive your K32001 Kotare 1/32 Spitfire Mk.Ia (Mid) model (and art print and exhausts), in almost all cases this will be well ahead of our international distribution partners.

We have also updated the instructions on our website to represent the final print version.

Of courses, if you wish to cancel your pre-order for a refund please just let us know and we’ll do that for you, but pleased understand that there might be a bit of a delay in processing these requests.

Thanks again for your pre-order and support, it really is appreciated and it does make a difference.

Cheers
Richard

Hope that helps!

That’s a great letter from Richard. It sums it up succinctly.  I have a sneaking suspicion that not one of us on this forum are lacking in projects 🤣

Along with that sad fact, I’d rather wait a bit longer and have a “Wingnut Quality” Spitfire than a revisit of the Revell release.  When you look at Meng’s slapdash release of the incomplete Wingnut Dr1, complete with unfinished tooling, you certainly appreciate their willingness to “get it right the first time”.

It's always rewarding to learn more about other cultures, their traditions and celebrations.
