Okey dokey.

Wanted to do a 109G, considered the Eduard ( I think their stuff is ok ) ......Hasegawa .....old tool so

went of the new in 2017 Tamiya tooling .

And it fits like a glove , the engineering is exquisite. No clean up no filler ...nada .

I know little about this aircraft , having only built Trumpies 1/32 E a few years back .

Considering a Finnish frame ....they called them "Mersu"after the engoine , and the knocked a lot of Soviets down . Last one retired in 1954 !

Ze box contents , mask , 3 sets of decals, full engine and a lot of options . This 1/48 ...

As the cow says ......Moovin on ...

This kit literally has no gaps , barely enough space to leach in a little extra thin

Little Cute masks for the canopy come in the box. Clever ideas on the use of clear plastic for upper fuse as well as the canopy to make that joint painless.

IP is weenie , and no decals which I thought odd given all the other good stuff. TBH it won't be easily seen later

And here  we are ready for paint ...so soon !

In case you wonder............no TV , zero interest in sport , grown up kids living miles away , wife who works long hours , me work from home = lots of hours for glueing stuff :)

Paint ...mask ....paint ...mask.....then pull all the mask off and hope . Still prefer it to decals .

Colours somewhat mixed by eye/ Tamiyas recommendations mostly .

Mottling is a lil heavy but might gently rub it back when fully dry ....I've seen thats a good tip 😁

Then some other stuffs , weathering blah blah . .

Also some links to WW2 films about flying the Mursu and it's aces .

I've a big soft spot for Finn's ...no one pushes them around ....ever .

PW, this came together beautifully and so quick. The camo looks spot on. I’ve got the Eduard G14 in the stash with AM. After seeing this that maybe a side project together with the Elco.

Sport is my downfall, with the Six Nations on, that’s at least seven weekends partly ruined. Also WFH but my company insists on an eight hour core day. So week day modelling is literally zero…………

Terrific quick build and agree, the Tamiya kits are usually really well engineered and create a beautiful result - yours is terrific.  Love the subject matter as you don't usually see a lot of Finnish aircraft. Nice job on the (tiny) IP and  I think your mottling is spot-on as well - not too heavy from what I can see.  Which airbrush do you use?  I picked up a Grex specifically to do the mottling as I had much better control over the paint with their pistol-grip format than I had with my Iwata HP-CS.  Yours came out beautifully.

Thank Chris , I use a couple of Iwata Neo's , 0.2 and 0.3 maybe . Just tend to buy a new one every 18 months or so rather than spend lots replacing bits .

More progress ......exhaust staining - pictures show this clearly on some of the Finnish aircraft. (Example below )

Oil weathering n dirt.................& a lot of spilled oil !

Also done as wheels up , the kit does not offer this as an option, I used the wheels and the doors; the oleo legs just would not go in there ...it'll all make sense later.

Quick pix only as this is not done yet .

And he landed on a frozen lake, but the ice gave up and now you have to get a gallon of clear resin and some magic sculpt and a 3D printed sculpture of a fisherman and his boat  :)

Since my plan is clearly obvious , this is what I have been up to over the past few days .

Mapping out the diorama using graph paper - I find this really handy as you can measure once and record , rather than keep checking  . The pencil was foreshadowing the outcome however .

IMG-0658.jpg

Cutting Foam on my Proxxon ...I just love their tools.

IMG-0661.jpg

Quick check .....hmm not 100% sure, although me trying to work in 1/48 and not 1/35 is confusing , as all my groundwork is in the larger scale and I have a much better feel for proportions

IMG-0662.jpg

Pressing on........ it's all glued to a base of expanded polystyrene because that is nice and light , then I use a lighter / soldering torch to selectively melt the foam to kill any straight parts.

IMG-0666.jpg

Then made an edge with iron on veneer , skimmed it with builders fillers, and given it a few coats of diluted PVA as a sealer .

IMG-1133.jpg

Next . sprinkled this and used ballast freeze for the base layer of ground, added headnod to Saving Private Ryan ....

And the end result .....frankly was crap ....and so it was launched to bin . Ground cover way overscale , no slope to the lake so the resin pour will look silly, bank too short . Yup it's bin fodder. Not even convinced that the rectangle shape is the way to . So now awaiting more foam .

My other beef is that the grey and blue XPS sheets I have are tough as boots and very hard to work , and expanded polystyrene is very dodgy for resin, so trying something else .

On  lighter note , thought I'd make some trees. Have made many pines before given my Ardennes obsession ,  thought I would make some birches , again scale is my enemy .

Starts with flower arranging wire - this stuff is cheap, awesome and huge number of uses to me . I'm surprised the model manufacturers are not selling it yet as "speshul modelling wire" with a  500% mark up !

IMG-0664.jpg

Twisty twisty , then painted with a few layers of Tamiaya white.

I've used Milliput before for larger trees, it's ok , but the transitions from trunk to branch can be difficult as it can be thick.

IMG-0665.jpg

So that's enough said for now , there's more on the way, but of that ................another day.

...and then becomes an entry in the Get it Wet GB .... :)

That base looked so promising, sorry it didn't work out. I am positive that the second one will fill the bill.  Tree-making is truly a form of art, can't wait to see how it all falls together .

Cheers

Hope you still have the base, as it can be rescued.

Scrape off as much of the ground cover as you can. Then glue on finely sifted sawdust - an old model railroading ground cover technique.  Once dry, air brush or paint to what you envisioned and then add the details.

Appreciate the encouragement Peter , however ....

Life's too short to muck around putting lipstick on pigs 😁

All the angles and sizes are wrong for what I want to achieve with this diorama . TBH the scatter size is not the main issue. There's only about $15 worth of foam material there , so really not worth investing more time in that particular one . We'll call it a practice ! It happens sometimes, I just rarely post failure on the internet .

Watch this space as I have a weeks holiday coming up !
