benjaminsummerfield
Great approach to the D day stripes, nowt worse than perfectly straight stripes with crisp demarcation. Only aircraft like that I'm aware of was Beaumonts Tempest as it was done at the Hawkers factory.
Wingco57
This is the set I will use: http://www.hyperscale.com/2009/reviews/decals/aviaeologybeaureviewmp_1.htm It has everything I like about the tough Beau. Invasion stripes, heavy weatering, big red coded With yellow outline and rockets. I have the MDC rocket set for that. Cees
rkranias
looking good Cees. An excellent reference pic for hand painted stripes. Wonder how much drag was created?
RalphSarc
I think drag was secondary to being blown out of the sky by friendly fire. I wonder how much that happened??
Wingco57
Nice photo Rick. It shows exactly the rough nature of the finish ( or lack thereof). Some more progress. I masked off the stripes and gave the black stripes a rough Coat near the edges. The wings look great, the fuselage too, but the tape took some of the White off. No problem, this will be touched up by brush. I think I have succeeded in What I was aiming for. Although by judging the pic Rick posted, perhaps I must use An even bigger brush. Here is also a pic of the aircraft I am modelling. Cheers Cees
phoenixII
looking good Cees. An excellent reference pic for hand painted stripes. Wonder how much drag was created? Cees, great build my friend, glad you got back to the 'beast', watching with interest. Hey Rick, that's NEAT! Some of the striping was applied with brooms and / or a mop. To get the 'erks' to use a brush!!!!!!! Ralph, your comment about 'friendly fire', you DO realise your talking about both the Royal AND Merchant Navy. Those lads fired at ANYTHING. Didn't matter, stars n' bars, roundels or crosses ALL were fair game! Paul

Wingco57
Update time. Yesterday I sprayed the Sky undersurfaces. Today the dark sea grey took it's turn. Next the fun bit, the peeling off of the making tape. Very carefully considering my earlier experiences on the white. Cheers Cees
Wingco57
As Mr Miyagi would say: mask on, mask off! And no peeling, some slight touching up where paint Krept under the tape. With some luck the decals Will be on this week. Cees
benjaminsummerfield
Any touching up of the stripes by hand will only add to the effect. Just a point.... The Coastal command colours were EXTRA Dk sea grey as used by the fleet air arm. Dk sea grey was only used for the shadow scheme used on biplanes I think, by the time you've weathered it shouldn't be a problem.
RalphSarc
Cees those D-Day pants look fantastic. I'm going to steal your technique when I do my P38J for the Beaches to Berlin build. What a great job!!
Wingco57
Ben, You are correct, I forgot to mention the extra-bit. Although in this case I used Geschutzgrau provided by Revell Aqua. Sometime I have to be a bit creative because their colour range is not completely compatible. But as these aircraft weathered quite a bit that will not be noticable (I think).Cees

Wingco57
Avioaeology decals on. Not a fan. They are quite thick yet translucent and some do not stick very well. Set and Sol are doing their work hopefully. Cees
benjaminsummerfield
Who does a 1/32 Norwegian fjord?
Wingco57
Don't know, anyway I have no room for one. Today I put on the kit's stencils, but these suk too, silvering badly. Set and sol to the Rescue again. Also found new fuselage roundels which are exactly the same size and applied them On top of the ones already in place. So the translucency is much less obvious. Next coat of clear will smooth everything out hopefully. Cheers Cees
Administrators JeroenPeters Posted June 25, 2014 Administrators Share Posted June 25, 2014 Whoooaaa! Decals on! Check. Not much longer now. This is coming together real nice...
RalphSarc
I had a horrible time with the decals in my kit!!! Buying a vintage kits saves money but I will always order new decals from now on!!
Wingco57
Indeed, both the (old) kit decals and the (new) Avioaeology decals are terrible. I hope another coat of clear will get a grip on them. The good news is that a new canopy has been sourced through Peter from Airscale. He had one gathering dust. Cees
rkranias
Try Mr. Mark Softer. This has worked well on very stubborn Hasegawa and Tamiya decals. Mr. Mark Softer Not sure who carries it in EU. If you cannot find it let me know. I'll pick up a bottle for you.
Wingco57
Thanks Rick, I have seen that product over here. Will have a look. The clear coat evened out things quite a bit. So now on to detail painting (lots of doped red patches on this thing) and the weathering.Cees
Wingco57
Work is going on at a steady pace. Engines are finished now and detail painting underway. Question: Does anyone have any spare Hamilton Standard propellers lying around?I need some bosses as the Revell props are fine but the bosses look ridiculous. The plan is to replace these and put the kit blades on. Or any aftermarket 1/32 propellers available that I can hack about? CheersCees
Wingco57
Update I tried to represent the red doped cannon ports with a brush, somehow the acryl reacted with the clear gloss coat causing it to give a rough cracked effect. Exactly what I was after. It really looks doubed over in the field. Also a pic showing the invasion stripes and the red/ yellow codes. Quite colourful I think.
