One-Oh-Four
So doing a little bit of reading last night and it appears that Kobayashi's Hien was a Tei (D) model which has the longer nose. The Tei was lengthen by 190 mm (7.5 in) just after the exhaust line and forward of the windscreen to make room for the installation of Japanese 20 mm Ho 5 cannon, as the supply of MG 151 was not guaranteed by U-boat and the Ho-5 stocks were there in Japan... The Hasegawa kit is a short nose version, but Wolf pack designs do an conversion set. I was able to find one out of BNA Models in Aussie, so it should be here in the next week, since it only has to make a quick trip across the ditch to NZ. So I am going to have to do some chopping to make this fit!... So much for my Shake and Bake build! Wellll, you don't have to glue the nose parts together anymore.... It might make things simpler, even! Nice project! I have one half-built in the stash too!
One-Oh-Four
Hmmmm... Inserts no fit... I will have to use some plastic card to fill thoses gaps up Quite challenge to get it looking flawless!
Dave J
Its to small in width as well... Some plastic card and milliput should take care of it
Grant
That's a great start Dave. Shame about the inserts but a couple of Lego blocks might bridge the gaps. I can't believe how badly they got the dimensions wrong! The ought to be ashamed but won't.
Guest styrenedemon
This is some good looking work so far. Looking forward to seeing you handle those awful inserts.
Dave J
Cheers guys for the comments! A little more done on it today... Some of the plastic parts glued together... ready to be cleaned up tomorrow The wings seams have been cleaned up and the brass pilot tube has been fitted... The undersized inserts have been superglued into place now.. I think the easiest method to tackle the gaps are to fill with some plastic card and milliput to rest of the area.. Dave J
I am going to be pulling finger on this project... so expect a few updates for today! I dragged in my compressor into work today, and my goal is to have the cockpit painted and the fuse sealed up so I can graft of the Tei nose tomorrow or This afternoon if it all goes well! So all the resin & PE parts have been attached to the cockpit... I had a small mishap with the seat... so my plan is to use the harness to hide that hole! Cockpit has been primed using Mr Colour's Flat Black more to follow...
Dave J
Cockpit now has been painted RLM 79, and all the details have been picked out using Vallejo. Now off for a gloss coat and some more weathering!
Dave J
So I have been buying some AK Interactive stuff lately and haven't put it to the test yet... So why wait! Using AK's Brown Wash for Wooden Decks from their Naval range, I brushed on everywhere like I normally do with my oil washes... left it to dry for about 10mins.. and took to the parts with a cotton bud dipped into there Odourless Thinner and removed all the excess wash, and then sealed everything in with a coat of Aclad Klear Kote. The AK's stuff isn't to bad... and I can see myself using more of it in the future!
Dave J
What hole? Harness, just need to be painted and the cockpit deck can be fitted into place. And the Nose is on! Have a bit of a gap one side... That will be taken to with some miliput tomorrow!

rkranias
nice work on the pit Dave. enjoying this build and is giving me inspiration when I start my "Rising Sun" builds this fall. "Achtung Baby" builds starts early Jume when I finish my Jugs. that AK stuff looks interesting. what is your PSI when you shoot Alclad Klear Kote: 18psi? Needle size: .35mm, .5mm? I have been having some frustrating results with uneven coverage. I spray light multiple coats, some areas are gloss while some stay dull. Thoughts? Administrators James H Posted May 14, 2013 Administrators Share Posted May 14, 2013 What a great looking pit. I swear you're only doing this as it has a passing '109' resemblance

I only turn it down when I am doing luftwaffe mottling. The needle is .3mm
Guest styrenedemon
Looking really good. I've got a bit of the AK stuff for armor weathering and I really like it. I've used a bit of their brown wash for some stuff in my Spit cockpit. My favorite though is their "Track Wash." Over steel paint it gives a beautiful representation of weathered metal which works well on not only tank tracks, but exhaust stacks too.
Dave J
I have some of that Track wash Jimmy... I will try it on something soon! So task today is tackling all these gaps that the resin nose plug created...
Dave J
Seams have been filled with Miliput, and smoothed off using a damp cotton bud... Now just waiting for the underside to dry so I can sand out the step from the nose to the center fuselage
