Hasegawa 1/32 P-40E Darwin 1942

Recommended Posts

I decided to build this P-40 to depict a P-40E flown in the defense of Darwin, Australia in 1942 when the Japanese were on a roll. It should be a good subject for weathering since the conditions there were pretty rough. No matter what I tried to do the Interior yellow/green just would not come up to the shade it should be in these photos. Please bear with me as my photo editing apps are different now from the one I used to have (lost it when I had to dump everything and re-start my computer. I DO NOT like Windows 10!)

Nice start, I like early war subjects so will keep an eye on this one, my old camera always used to mess up greens so I can sympathise with you.

And if you do not like Windows 10 then definately avoid Windows 11, I have 3 desktop PC's and only 1 is compatible with Windows 11 so I gave it a go but after 2 days went back to 10, it was truly awful.

Cheers

Dennis

Great choice for your build as I have a soft spot for the RAF on Malta during the North African campaign.

I fully appreciate you frustration and you know me, I try not to get started on photography and post work, as I carried away with myself.

Regardless of the cockpit color, your front office looks amazing - some mighty nice work

I read Morehead's book some years ago.  It was good!

He did think the P-40 was a dog, though.

I have his book too and, yep, he wasn't a big fan of the P-40. Especially against the Zero.

It's coming along well Dennis. I hope it turns out like I envision it!

I had to go to Windows 10 when my on line banking no longer worked with 9. If it wasn't for that I'd go back to 9 in a heartbeat!

Thanks Peter. OOB cockpit isn't too bad actually. Not replacing it with some after market stuff saves some $$$$.

I'm still searching the internet for a photo editor app that I like. So far only Canon My Image Garden works but I'm still not satisfied. Frustrating.

I decided to replace the kit prop, which has slightly narrower and pointy blades, with blades from a Grey Matter prop set for the P-40 (the GM mounting piece had been lost at some point). I had to remove the kit props from the center mounting, drill out some mounting holes, then CA the replacement props in place. Not a huge difference but noticeable, at least to me. The one on the right, in case you find it hard to see the difference, is the modified piece.  🙂

Thank you Kevin. I much prefer Windows 9 but have to stay with 10 to be able to keep tabs on my bank account. 🙃

Win 11 and no different then Win 10 to me. My favorite MS: 98SE.

Nice decision on the prop - looks beefier and more substantial.

Mo betta prop for sure Peter. 🙂

It's subtle but there's definitely a difference in the prop blades so nice touch there John.

When I was still at the bank, we had Windows XP on our laptops. The "big " leap was going to Windows 98. This was around 2006-7.  A friend in the tech support dept called me up and asked if I wanted to guinea pig Windows 2000. She said I always found interesting issues that drove IT nuts solving so she thought I'd be great for it. I said sure and soon after had it installed on my laptop. At that time she told I was one of 3 people running 2000 in the entire bank on a live computer ( one fully connected to the bank's servers). No pressure. Lol.

And yes, I hate Windows 10 nevermind 11.

As to reason I switched back to 10 from the shiny new 11 it was the new File Explorer on 11, with 3 PC's I am always moving files around, but the Windows 11 version is not very user friendly or as versatile as the old one.

So after researching the problem and finding a lot of like minded people I switched back to 10, there was a convoluted way to load the old version but I was not going down that path, just reading it hurt my brain.

Cheers

Seems to always be some "issue" with which ever Windows we use.

Your prop mods look very nice.

Those early war E models did come with a narrow chord prop.  So if you wanted to stay with the original and save your resin ones for another warhawk...you could.  ;)

Agreed and I might do that even though I've already mounted the prop assembly to the spinner.

I did some checking in my 2 D&S books on the P-40's and it appears to me the pointy props were mainly on the B/C's and MAYBE some "E"'s but, as near as I could tell, the "E"'s seemed to have the slightly broader props. At any rate I'm going to stick with the broader setup. Thanks for the input. 🙂

Thanks. I say get one and build it. They are nice kits with no real fit problems and a very low "cuss-factor".

It does look better with a thicker prop, that's for sure.

Hasegawa never corrected that narrow prop and it really looks wrong on the later marks...like the N.

I decided to use a stencil for the US Army under the wings. Insignia Blue so I hope it looks "right" after I remove the stencils.
