I've always hairsprayed painted and chipped within a few hours, don;t trust it to reactivate after fully curing TBH. EDIT one of these MKs might look good in Oak Leaf or Plane Tree cammo ....hmmm 11 hours ago, BlrwestSiR said: Great camo there Rob. A nice disruptive scheme. I've never tried hair spray for chipping yet. I've used chipping fluids with mixed results. Thank you PW and Carl, there were many options camo wise, but I wanted to create an own pattern. I used hairspray on many occasions and it always worked for me, even after days. With my Corsair build, I used it even in two layers, separating the primer color from the metal base and between the camo color and the primer, to achieve more depth with the chipping. The only issue I have, besides the dreaded smell, is that sometimes the covering paint layers activate the hairspray a bit, normally not a problem with weathered objects. I have some heavy chipping fluid as well, but never really used it. Cheers Rob
DocRob
Painting and decaling the Kampfanzug is relatively time consuming, as every layer of paint or varnish has to dry properly. I sprayed some yellow areas on the weapon arm and weapons and brush painted many details. A coat of Pledge went onto the camouflage as a gloss base for decaling. The supplied decals were good to work with, luckily. I had different experiences with Hasegawa´s MaK decals, which were rigid and won´t settle on curved surfaces. On top, I put a matte coat, using the matte varnish from Winsor and Newton Galeria, which @PanzerWomble recommended, for the first time. I need some more experience with the stuf, but like the result. I used Pledge and the water based matte varnish to hopefully be able to activate the hairspray under these numerous layers. Next will be heavy weathering, the most important step of this project. I hope, I can achieve the desired look. Cheers Rob
belugawhaleman
Looking great Rob! I've been eyeing some Maschinen Krieger kits and have one on the way. Can't wait. I have a weird idea for the camo. ' been thinking how do you weather something that walks on the moon? (Clue) . No atmosphere no rust---right? I imagine wear areas, scratches, damage, etc. Anyway, we'll see. I'm enjoying your build. Keep up the good work! 2
DocRob
Thank you Paul, Maschinen Krieger kits are a real fun to build and paint. You can make your own designs and there is no room for discussions about historical accuracy . I can´t wait to see what you make of yours, which seems to be one of the moon based kits (Kamel? or just a power suit?). Leakage may happen on the moon as well, maybe impacts from meteorite fragments and dust. Cheers Rob

They shipped it out yesterday , so about a week or so as I chose a cheaper shipping option. Anyway, I think it will be a fun project. I have some toy steam engine driving bands that could make great armoured cables, I was thinking.
PanzerWomble
Plastic water bottle is pleasantly 'anachronistic'. That hairspray is buried deep...... I hope it still behaves for you or out with the sponge I guess.

Nice one Paul, I thought about getting one too. I recently bought the Neuspotter, which looks sinister somehow. I purchased it also from Plaza Japan, but it took them more than three weeks to even ship the parcel. It hasn´t arrived yet, but I hope it will soon. I may ad the bugger to the Kampfanzug sandbox dio. Cheers Rob

The hairspray barely worked and I thought about additional sponge chipping . Cheers Rob 2

I ordered the Maschinen Krieger P.K.A today from Plaza....an armoured space suit thing...looks to be armed with a sci-fi equivalent of a Panzerfaust! Whoever's in that Camel better watch out ! The annoying thing about Plaza is the time they take to get things out...sort of like Hobbylinc in the U.S.. In my case the shipment with the Camel was held up by the availability of the other item I ordered....a Hasegawa "Egg Girl" , a nurse figure that seems to be in demand,....... Pairing up the two for your dio would be a great idea! No, I don't mean the nurse.
DocRob
It´s time for some heavy wear and tear for the Kampfanzug. Unfortunately, the hairspray wasn´t working like planned, possibly due to many layers of paint and varnish on top. Right, plan B, scratching, chiseling, grinding, sanding and rubbing was incorporated using a variety of tools, to achieve different looking wear, a messy affair. I don´t like the effect right now, as it doesn´t look like my planned sandblast treatment, but it will have to do as a first stage for weathering. I will try to accomplish the sandblast effect with sponge chipping and stiff brush dabbing. You can clearly see, that one side is almost stripped of paint, while the other is relatively unharmed. I want to simulate a one sided sandblast, to add some dynamic into the weathering. Cheers Rob
FullArmor
looking good👍. I managed to create very realistic worn paint surface. First i painted model black. Then sprayed main color. Then before main color was completely dry used brass wire brush to scrape off some paint revealing black underneath. To finish this off you can use drybrushing steel color to these black marks. This will make those effects stand out more. 1
HubertB
Have you tried glass-fiber pens to wear the surface ? Hubert

I´m not in panic mode right now, but felt, bast work substractive, removing material and then add new layers. 13 minutes ago, HubertB said: Have you tried glass-fiber pens to wear the surface ? Yup Hubert, but unfortunately, this time it didn´t work too well. The colors I chose (Tamiya XF) dried rock hard, even when sprayed in thin layers and were not easy to remove. The fiber pen left a lot of unhealthy glass fier shards, but had nearly no effect, other than sticking in my hand . Cheers Rob
BlrwestSiR
Rob, what about a sanding stick? Use a finer grade one and gently sand the areas you want to wear away the paint. I used this approach on my F4U wing roots to simulate the wear I wanted. 6

Your wear looks absolutely fantastic and I managed something similar with my F4-U, using multilayer hairspray. With the Kampfanzug it was different somehow, because of two factors, I wanted decals to be similar treated than the rest, which meant an additional gloss layer of Pledge and a sealing layer of W&N acrylic matte. The second factor is the shape of the Kampfanzug and the idea of having a sandblast wear, not impacting with the airflow, like with the wing, but straight on. So true Kevin, I usually work out my painting and weathering process in advance with the finalized picture rendered in my head and mostly stick to this plan by the numbers. Not this time. This is often a point, where I ditch a project. In this case, I decided on a different approach. Cheers Rob
DocRob
Time for some pointillism. I lied a bit about the looming panic, because the hairspray didn´t work like it should. I hate to alter my original plan, but this time, I didn´t bin the project and instead worked on a plan to add the sandblast effect with different kind of paints, dabbed dryly onto the surface with an old brush. It took a while to get the Extreme Metal Steel dotted, like intended, one side blasted, the other nearly unharmed. Cheers Rob
DocRob
On went the second layer of dry paint dabbed on. This time it was a light bone color, called Moonray Flesh. I also applied the paint with a stiff old brush, but this time not only in the direction of the sandblast, but also a bit more from above to simulate some bleaching. This is only the basic weathering and more will be added later with sand deposits and dust everywhere. I have to decide, how to weather the clear parts. I´m open to any suggestions. The sandblast should have blinded this canopy side, but the other and front window should be relatively clear. Cheers Rob
KevinM
I was not that impressed with the first dry brush Rob it looked like paint but the second application brought the first in and blended it well bud it has that look now. 2

After the hairspray thing didn´t work, it was clear, that it will be substituted by a multi layer weathering effort, starting with sanding, scratching and other sorts of mechanical abuse, followed by steel paint and then light sand paint. Later I will add more layers of sand, dust, but that will be done together with the base. Cheers Rob
HubertB
Getting progressively there, Rob. For the transparency, I would try either good’ol CA fog, or alternatively, stippling the blasted side with a hard brush dipped either in lacquer thinner or extra thin glue. I assume it is polystyrene ? Hubert 2
BlrwestSiR
Rob, try flat clear paint on the clear parts. If you use acrylic, if you don't like it you can strip it off. Otherwise, the suit is looking amazing. 2
PanzerWomble
Flat clear , maybe with 3% earth brown to give a faded frosty look . I do similar on vehicle windscreens for that minging look You'll only get one chance though . 2
