PTW6187 Posted April 3, 2014 Share Posted April 3, 2014 I am moving this from the Pacific GB just so I can keep on keeping on. As I said earlier, I had cause to drop out of that GB so I can build this for a friend of mine. More on the scheme later. This is a way better kit than the ZM P-51. I am thoroughly enjoying this build. So far I have the pit done, the side walls done, engine done and the inter cooler/radiator done and then test fit. I monged out and tried to close up a gap behind the pit but after about 30 minutes of squeezing things together and them not fitting did I come to the realization that maybe it was supposed to be like that. Really?I really like this oil wash technique. PTW6187 Posted April 7, 2014 Author Share Posted April 7, 2014 Well quite a bit of the Fuselage and the engine compartment are done. I reeeelly love this kit. Did I mention how much I love this kit?so far seams and gaps are nonexistent and the only issue I have is from a mistake I made assembling the engine and that caused it not to line up straight. Now the top frame strap didnt follow suit so it may have some sort of a fit issue there.right and left front frame pieces here.Not as many hoses and pipes as the Tamiya Spitfire kit but this time it ran fairly well for me in its assembly.I also had time to put the tail plane together and it fit like a glove.I am going to attempt the Hurry Home Honey (early) which was in the Dragon kit. PTW6187 Posted April 8, 2014 Author Share Posted April 8, 2014 Got the wings assembled and installed plus I only displayed one gun bay and ammo belt, I figured that's good enough. All through out this build I have wondered what it is like to have your best and I think with the way this kit is going so far, I may find out in out a couple of weeks.The wings went on pretty well with only a small gap in the fit but it still does fit like a glove. Really, Dollar signs are flashing past my eyes as I think of other Tamiya kits yet to build.I even feel cocky enough to attempt another figure but this time with a bit more attention to detail and not rushing to get any thing done. rkranias Posted April 11, 2014 Share Posted April 11, 2014 I love Alclad. Important to have good surface prep. Your Humbrol Gloss Black base worked really good. I have had success with this base: Tamiya Black X-1: 1 Tamiya Clear X22: 1 Mr. Leveling Thinner: 2 Applied using thin multiple layers. I took my time and applied thin coats. This is almost a dozen passes until I was comfortable with coverage. I let mine cure for a week. First overall base of Alclad. Then various Alclad shades for the panels. Pre weathering. I just dont have the ventilation to shoot that stuff much and I yet have been able to get such a pristine surface prep that it takes. Thats why I use Vallejo and the Tamiya weathering system to get my metal effects. Have some problems with the transparency of the stars over the invasion stripes but hey, this is almost done and you really cant tell, right? If your feeling brave and your confident the decals have adheared properly I would suggest to carefully mask off the offending area in small sections at a time ie one point at a time and spray some pretty well thinned white, two bits of masking tape with no cuts and your away.
