RalphSarc
Thanks Wayne for your kind comments. As I said Beth and I are looking forward to a prosperous 2014 and so far that is shaping up! The Ju88 is my second build on LSM and I'm anxious to see it's outcome over my first build the Bf110. I enjoy using these newly learned LSM talents on my models and thanks to friends on the forum feel much more comfortable and confident using them. I must say it's great fun, lol!
RalphSarc
With temperatures at 94F coupled with a humidity of 83 percent it was a good afternoon for a short nap and bench time in the AC, lol!! As you can see the Ju88 is packing some homemade brass heat!! Like the Bf110 in real life I wouldn't want to be the recipient of what it could deliver with this forward facing firepower! A night-fighter coming out of the dark must have been horrifying and devastating to its pray!! Also I was able to complete the port side engine nacelle with its homemade engine exhaust flash guards. I thing a bit of filler and sanding here an there should produce a passable nacelle. I'm in the home stretch, lol!! Soon it will be painting panel lines, shading, painting, weathering, decals and a matt finish!! How fun :-)
wackyracer
Ralph, great work Sir. Look forward to seeing the paint stage.
RalphSarc
Steady progress yesterday with the completion and installation of the starboard engine nacelle and the engine exhaust flash guards. Note to future builders: the engine nacelle fit on the new Revell Germany Ju88A-4 is much better than that of the Ju88A-1 kit. The design is different with the addition of a third bottom cowling section. I used almost no filler on the seams. Also details such as rivets, service doors, door latches and air scoops are apparent on the newer model over the old model. Wow almost out of parts, lol!!
wemattson
Ralph, Very few sprues left. It looks like you're approaching the finish line. Excellent work so far; I'm looking forward to seeing how this one comes out! Cheers, Wayne

RalphSarc
Okay guys gather round because I need your help.I'm nearing the painting stage of my Ju88C-6 nightfighter build. Here's what I'm considering.First paint semi gloss black, second install the decals, third seal with Future, forth apply a wash of light gray and burnt umber before sealing with a matt finish?I want the paint job to have interest rather than just looking like a black airplane.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! rkranias
When I do my Luft nightfighters I will go at it like this: I am following the "Pastor John Doctrine" on paint and finish. Black primer over entire plane. Mr. Surfacer 1500 Black is awesome! Thinned 50/50 RLM 75 Grey pre shade on panel lines Thinned RLM 22 overall in several passes Gloss Decals Gloss Not sure about my next steps: Wash? At this point my mind is not made up regarding a wash. Could be a lightened Flory's applied with directional rub. Overall wash? Highly thinned Black/Brown, just a few passes to tone down decals. Exhaust stains, be sure to hit the stabilizers too. Finish with a matt varnish. Boom! Your build is looking great. I cannot wait to start my 88. I am cornered with my 190C and am about to abandon before I throw it against the wall.
RalphSarc
Rick that's exactly what I was looking for. I never thought of a black primer!!!! Are the gloss cuts Future? Could I use Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black as a primer and would I thin it? My hobby shop guy suggested a light burnt umber wash. I'd also like to add some sort of fading on the top surfaces of the fuselage and wings as I would imagine the real aircraft would have due to the sun. wackyracer
Ralph, have a look for Tamiya XF85 black rubber. I got some as a try for rubber wheels but its a very nice dirty/worn black colour which is perfect for these nightfighters. I'd mix some different shades and see what you think?

wackyracer
Yes that's a good idea. These same colour all over schemes need some different shading to break it up. I often take the original colour then add a couple of drops of a lighter/or darker shade and touch in different panels
rkranias
Rick that's exactly what I was looking for. I never thought of a black primer!!!! Are the gloss cuts Future? Lots of options: Future ok, Albeit I have never used Future for overall gloss Tamiya F-22 Clear cut 50/50 with Leveling Thinner Alclad Gloss Klear Kote straight from bottle *Solvent based gloss required for sealing decals. Also required if using a Flory's or pastel wash. MR. Color Super Gloss cut 50/50 with Leveling thinner Could I use Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black as a primer and would I thin it? Never used XF-1 for primer. Strongly recommend Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 Black cut 50/50 with Leveling Thinner, hands down the best primer I have ever used. I'd also like to add some sort of fading on the top surfaces of the fuselage and wings as I would imagine the real aircraft would have due to the sun. Good idea, nightfighter black finish is new to me. Perhaps a few light passes on upper surface with a heavy thinned med gray might work. I'll have to test it on my mule in near future.
efrick
The '88 is looking good Ralph! I have always thought the "C" model was the most attractive of all the '88 variants. I'll be anxious to see how your "nightfighter black" turns out!
RalphSarc
My friend Arno from Switzerland sent me this concerning German prop colors which I found interesting! So did the Ju88C-6 have steal or wooden props??
RalphSarc
Preparing to begin painting the Ju88! But..... Very disappointed with my month old Iwata Neo Airbrush. Pressed the trigger today to paint and heard a snap. Upon inspection found the the threaded barrel at the end if piston broke in half.Called Iwata costumer service where they suggested I ship it to Portland Or and for $25.00 they would honor their five year warranty, repairing it and shipping it back all in 30 days!!! Really!! They said that if it appeared to be a factory defect they would repair for free but had no reports concerning my reported defect, lol!! For $50 I'll just order another one! RalphSarc
Since I primed the Ju88 in gray I decided to spray a mixture of Tamiya semi-gloss Black and Gray as lightly as I could especially on the top surfaces. It doesn't show in this picture but it looks pretty good, kinda faded in spots! I think with gray, oil and burnt umber washes it will blend nicely plus a dry brush chipping of aluminum should add interest. Keeping my fingers crossed, lol!!
lawman56
Well, Ralph, that sucks about the airbrush, but if I've learned nothing else in this hobby, Murphy's Law controls everything! One nice thing about model building though, every setback for me, is a lesson learned for next time. I had a Badger 150 that I dropped and bent slightly. While waiting on a replacement part, I purchased a Grex. Now I use my Grex for everything I paint, but still fixed the Badger and use it as a back-up. Plus a friend of mine is considering getting into the hobby, so once he's ready to airbrush, I'll have one for him to use.

I decided to return my Neo to Iwata in Portland Or for repair but just bought a Paasche Talon on eBay, lol!!! The Paasche is a step up from the Neo of course so the Noe will be relegated to backup duties one it returns. Or like you say I have a few friends that are also showing interest in modeling so the Neo would be a good starter for them. I played with the Paasche at the hobby store today and its pretty sweet!!
RalphSarc
You know as I reach these skill set milestones, like today, with this Ju88C-6 conversion build I have to stop and take stock of the journey I've made since joining LSM! I just want to sincerely thank everyone here for their kindness, support, suggestions and guidance. I can't believe I've come this far and I look forward to the road ahead. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
wemattson
Ralph, Sorry to hear about your airbrush but the Paasche Talon is a nice replacement; I've been using one for three years and it has never let me down, you'll grow to rely on it as your go to airbrush. Nice shade of black on your Ju 88! Cheers, Wayne

I was impressed with its versatility also. I ordered the airbrush and hose combo as I understand they manufacture their own hose threaded end sizes! Are you still using the needle that came with it or have you change needle sizes? Maybe I'll get James or Ben to tutor me in review writing and post my thoughts once I get a chance to play with it a bit.

wemattson
Ralph, I had to replace one of the needles due to my clumsiness. I bent the tip when i dropped the needle by mistake during cleaning. I was able to order a new one from Paasche and had it in a couple of days. Regards, Wayne
