Took a bunch of paint to get here.

I get why smaller jars are good to maintain the quality of paint, but in 1/32 scale, painting anything like your F-14 (or F-4 or.....) takes multiple jars.  Ugh!

So true. The funny thing is Tamiya acrylic  used to come in bigger bottles.

Their original size was 23ml compared to the current 10ml size. These two almost certainly are from the late '80s when the paint first came out.

At least when I sprayed all the Light Gull Grey surfaces that took less an a bottle of Mr Color.

Nice work. Tamiya still has the larger bottles. The smaller bottles being

descrbed as mini. Their lacquers are sold in the smaller bottles. The annoying thing is that when they introduce a new color, it's always in

the smaller size....don't know why.

Paul, I didn't know they still had the bigger bottles. Only the mini ones come into Canada.

Their enamel paints are in square bottles that are reminiscent of the old Testors glass ones.

Apparently, the enamel paints aren't sold in the US, at least nobody stocks

them here as far as I know

Paul

How true and I wish they would start to sell then here in the states. Seems these days we are the last to be offered any of the new products ... we're at the bottle of the distribution list these days. :(

New, fill in build project, the Academy 1/35 AH-1Z Viper. Surely not Tamiya or Hasegawa in fit and the instructions are on the vague side with part location and orientation. Color call outs are suspect as well. Quinta cockpit set was added to add a lot of the missing details.  I'm going as always, mostly OOB.

Peter, would you believe the Tamiya enamels came out before their acrylics? There was a toy store here in Toronto that was bringing them in back in the early '80s.  Then when they stopped selling them  no one else bothered to import them until more recently.

Very nice paint but I liked the water wash up of the acrylics when those came out so I didn't end up getting too many of the enamels.

Your  AH-1Z looks really good. I've got their much older Whisky Cobra in the stash. That out needs a lot more work.

Car

I never would have guessed that about the enamels. Just seems so hap-hazard on how distribution works these days.

Thanks for the nice comments on the Viper. Thought I would give it a shot and see how it goes. Academy surely isn't Tamiya but I'm getting there.

The Whisky Cobra is a terrific kit, only two rotor blades and doesn't take much space up on the shelf. I'm planning on keeping my four-rotor blade setup removable just for that reason. I actually never dreamed attack helicopters were so big, I'm looking at a Whisky Cobra down the road, so hopefully you'll do yours so I can see how it's done before I do mine. 😉

Thanks Chris, much appreciated.

The normal Quinta details are as awesome as always, but the seat cushions and harnesses seem to be a very thing, flat paper material - not good at all. I used to think their original harnesses were a bit too thin, but these are ridiculous. Just my two cents.

The Viper just earned a new home: the SOD. Sick and tired of removing mold seam lines where the two sides are different heights. I've been at the landing gear struts for hour after hour and it's never ending. Good ridden.  :wallbash:

I started on another Tomcat ... 1/48 ...... Tamiya F-14A. This will be a Desert Storm VF-1 Wolfpack bird.

I have started with the nose gear bay and nose gear.

Wheel bay is from MCC and the gear is Detail and Wonder. I had to do some surgery to get the nose gear to mate up with the bay. Had to cut the nose gear mounting lugs of to fit in the bay and then worked it to mount with brass wire so I can move the partially assembled gear leg up into the gear bay so I don't snap it off.

The detail on the gear bays and landing gear for the nose gear and main gear is just crazy.

Removing the gear from the 3d printed supports was a little nerve-wracking.

I was not all that happy with the Quinta F-4 seat cushion - not thick enough on its own, but too thick to conform to something underneath it.  Thankfully, not really easy to see down in the cockpit.  Sorry to hear about the SOD.  Absolutely understand.  Seams on kits can be maddening to deal with.

Scott, that is definitely an incredible about of detail!!!  I feel you on removing parts from the 3D printing.  I keep finding 3D parts (in my case from ResKit) sand beautifully, but seem to be rather brittle with no ability to absorb any torsion or torque.  Unlike Styrene.
