Special Hobby Whirlwind
Spitfire replied to Peterpools's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
Hi Peter, another photo, the seat cushion does seem to be of a canvas type material from the photos, so a light or medium tan may be appropriate, I have just had a look through my books but cannot find any more information, though I have discovered that I have a 2014 and a 2021 issue of the same book, the Valiant Airframe Album 4. That looks every inch a Spitfire, a tremendous job done well. And a Whirlwind on the way, one of my favourite subjects, I've waited years for someone to fetch out a 1/32 scale kit, in desperation I even built the 1/48 Classic Airframes Whirlwind but it did not do much to scratch the itch. All the best, have a great day Cheers Dennis

It's amazing the difference it makes when the "uniform" has been put on, looks great. Cheers Dennis -

What a pain that is, the fun part gone wrong, as to painted roundels I cheated at the start and used plastic sheet to practice on before commiting to painting on my latest "masterpiece". The three colour roundels took a bit more practice and the four colour ones called for "cheating", I airbrush the position of the 4 colour roundel yellow and then place the mask on the yellow. 1. Paint the camouflage colours. 2. Remove the white and red sections of the mask 3. Airbrush white 4. Replace the white section of mask and airbrush the red, when dry mask off the red. 5. Remove the blue section of mask and airbrush the blue. 6. Remove the yellow section of mask, and all done. Upper wing roundel practice Mask in place, red airbrushed. Red section replaced and blue section removed Blue airbrushed and all done Cheers Dennis -
I keep explaining to my wife that it's just like a womens shoe collection, you have to have a large selection to choose your next build from. Cheers Dennis

Spread wings do it for me, I always like my builds to be buttoned up and showing the complete airframe, for me the only excepton would be for multiple builds on a carrier flight deck where space was at a premium. Cheers Dennis

Moved the 1/32 stuff out of the loft last year, but the 1/48 1/35 and 1/350 are still up there, have to build faster. Cheers Dennis

I go away on holiday for two weeks and it all goes wrong, but it looks like you have turned it around, I hate having to backtrack but once you see a problem it will always be there, it's better to bite the bullet and fix it, so you have done the right thing as far as I am concerned. I'm pretty boring where paint is concerned Xtracolor and Sovereign Colourcoats are my tried and tested brands, if needed I still have a stash of Humbrol and Modelmaster enamels sittng in the study on standby as it were. What a shame I would have bought a 1/32 scale version in a heartbeat but not a 1/35 scale kit. Cheers Dennis

Yes that is my approach as well, at the moment the Spitfire is in the paint shop so I am doing prep work on the next "masterpiece" while I am waiting between coats. Cheers Dennis -

This from Edgar the late Spitfire expert in a Britmodeller thread about the crowbar. https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/48160-another-spit-question/ Posted 25 April 2010 - 08:43 PM On the door 23-1-42; before that (3-2-41) beside the seat (right side,) and it could have been plain steel, bronze green, or black, never red (until post-war.) Edgar It was retro-fitted, to all Marks, but not until those dates. Edgar Cheers Dennis -
Lots of information about this one over on Britmodeller, here's a link, it does mention a Techmod decal sheet as well. https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235084090-spitfire-ix-uf-q/ Cheers Dennis

Hi Peter, I think the armour plate on all Spitfires was IG, and on the XVI the area under the canopy was camouflage, below is a modern photo but it gives you the idea, just ignore the modern red crowbar. Cheers Dennis
