I have the Academy boxing with a lot of extras from Brassin Expand Thanks Rob. The Academy is not as much as a nightmare as you read everywhere. Be careful though on the u/c bays and get them in the right boom. If the Academy was the only one on the block I’d be happy. I also have the Tamiya one and I am going to use the decals from the Academy. I also kept some of the Brassin for the Tamiya build such as wheels and other bits. If you want I’ll give you a list… 2 1

Expand Thanks Kai, it’s been long tome since I used Xtracolor. I put a decal down albeit a Cartograf one and I looks as if it’s been sprayed on. Xtracolors faded olive drab is brilliant……. 3

GazzaS Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 Nice to see some color, Phil! I apologize... I often forget to search this part of the forum for new work. 2

Bomber_County Posted August 28, 2021 Author Posted August 28, 2021 I’m calling this one finished. ……it’s not the Tamiya build and fit but does have some lovely AM……..Learnt a lot with this one and there are still warts that jump out at me. The compressors apparently caused the white streaking so tried to replicate that. Actually for the first time ever tried panel washes, not sure how convincing they are though. Xtracolour faded olive drab, Cartograf decals and enamel Matt varnish……..hope you like it’s been a learning curve again but pleased with the outcome……..don’t believe all you read about the Academy base kit…… 8
Peterpools Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Phil She is across the line and looking mighty good - so very well done as you had to deal with a number of issues during the build. Air brush work looks flawless, as well as the panel line washes. Keep 'em comin Peter 1

Keep 'em comin Peter Expand Thanks Peter much appreciated, the wear around the cockpit and forward booms could have been better, I should have had aluminium underneath and chipped the surface…….one for next time…….I still have the Tamiya P38 to do so I’ll give it a go……..this is my first attempt at weathering on aircraft…….. 1
GazzaS Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Mighty fine work, Phil! Have you experimented much with 'sponge' chipping? It's a great alternative when you don't want to paint a coat underneath your topcoat. 2
Peterpools Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Phil For your first shot out of the box with weathering, mighty nice for sure. Keep 'em comin Peter

DocRob Posted August 30, 2021 Posted August 30, 2021 Great looking P-38 Phil, congratulations. I'm very pleased to hear (and see), that the Academy kit is doable and not only this, you achieved a very beautiful result here. Painting is flawless and I'm inspired to start mine sooner than planned. I have an Academy with goodies (later model in NMF) and the Tamiya waiting for me. Cheers Rob 2

Cheers Rob Expand Thanks Rob, very appreciative of your kind words. Definitely leap into the Academy as a precursor for the Tamiya. I made the mistake of putting the wrong u/c bays in the wrong booms, be careful. The rear canopy is needs a little sanding to seat right, mine doesn’t. For once the painting came out as I wished, even though I sprayed the spinners 4 times……….also put a lot of weight in the nacelles and nose……. 2
