P-51D Bardahl Special 2022 finished

Recommended Posts

Seldom do I build a model of a a/c depicted at two different times in history. I decided Bardahl Special was special enough to warrant it. Draw Decals has issued two sets for the same a/c so I decided to go for it. The first one shown here is the 2022 version of the same a/c with some differences since the a/c had a couple of accidents since 1964 and was rebuilt a couple of times. The 2022 a/c is a pylon racer while the 1964 version was a cross country racer. Same a/c, different type races and different times. Since another racer has since acquired the #8 they decided to use a similar looking #3. Both models are Revell Germany with mods. Painted with Testor's Gloss White with gray interiors. For some reason I really like shiny white racers! LOL I hope you guys like the results of my efforts. :)

John,  Stunning work!  Hard to hide defects in a gloss paint, and even more so when it is white.  GREAT job!! The finish is phenomenal.  Love you followed the history of the aircraft and now have two versions of the aircraft.  I've not really done that yet, but have built the same aircraft in different scales (1/72, 1/48, 1/72 - Big Beautiful Doll).

Did you use the Revell flaps, or something aftermarket?  I have one of the 'new' Revell P-51D kits left and have one last set of the AMUR flaps for it.

Thank you Chris. I'm happy you like it. Yes, I used the kit flaps on both builds. Took some test fitting and trimming though! :)

These Bardahl racers look indeed special John. The P-51 is such a nice airframe and the racer livery make them look speedy. Nice work with the gloss white finish, where I may have added some panel wash for enhancing the rivets, like in your firs pic of the real thing.

Cheers Rob

Agreed Rob. The P-51 makes a great looking racer. I thought the screw heads came out just fine. I used a lead pencil for them where, I think, a panel wash would likely mar the rest of the finish.
