denders Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 I have a friend who is a retired Navy Chief. For a number of years, he served on board USS Nimitz. He's retired from the Navy and retired from a civilian career too. So I bought a Trumpeter 1/700 USS Nimitz, 1975. I was going to make a diorama with ocean, etc. While thinking about the project I thought I should add one of the escorts. He also at one time earlier in his career served on board USS Pharris. He's never mentioned the USS Pharris escorting the USS Nimitz, but I figured modeler's license, so the escort is going to be the USS Pharris. He's talked about one particular cruise and I found information online that lists the airwing complement, squadrons, aircraft numbers, aircraft types. So: As you can see, I'm going to try to drive myself insane with all the PE too.🤪 I've started the base, it's 15" x 42". I need to get some trim to add along the sided and stain. I'll be using modeler's license for the distance between ships too. I'll see how fast it progresses. At least I still get to model aircraft too. 😁 10 1
Landlubber Mike Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 Nice! Looking forward to this one. I love 1/700 models. 2
DocRob Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 You put yourself in a situation, denders, but I will follow your interesting project. Having just finished my first 1/350 ship with loads of PE, I know for sure I will never attempt something in 1/700 other then the Death Star. Cheers Rob 3
Peterpools Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 Dave Awesome project and will be following with great interest. 1
denders Posted May 28, 2023 Author Posted May 28, 2023 Well, any and all suggestions are welcome. I guess I'll see how long it goes before this is bent. I also note the bit of fuzz I've got to remove. Deck gun for USS Pharris. I've been studying the PE for the USS Pharris. It's definitely an evenings only project. When all the caffeine from the morning's coffee has worn off. 5 3
KevinM Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 Dave I watch alot of YT and this individual has a fairly neat way about doing seas. 6
GusMac Posted June 2, 2023 Posted June 2, 2023 How they paint those thin lines for the spray patterns is insane! 1
denders Posted June 2, 2023 Author Posted June 2, 2023 I thought it was interesting how he painted the decking. Also, the masks for the decking while painting everything else. Once he got to creating the water, I recognized that I had seen a different video by the same person. It's all interesting watching other folk's techniques. Always something to learn. 2

denders Posted June 16, 2023 Author Posted June 16, 2023 So, not much progress to report except for adding to the project. I got to thinking about the deck equipment and what was in the kit didn't satisfy me, to I went looking at Squadron. I keep looking for ways to drive myself crazy. 🤪 3 1 1

Landlubber Mike Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 That's going to be quite the project with all that aftermarket. Looking forward to it! 1
denders Posted June 20, 2023 Author Posted June 20, 2023 A little bit of progress on USS Pharris today. (Too rainy to paint.) Next will be PE parts. 4
Peterpools Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 Dave WOW - the PE work is looking amazing and way beyond my talents. 1
denders Posted July 7, 2023 Author Posted July 7, 2023 Welllllllllllllllllll....................... I'm sure the PE work in the picture is well within your skills. That's still all plastic. PE after some paint and masking. I'm sure some of the PE is beyond my skills too. Just hope I can learn enough to get it acceptable. If I don't drive myself crazy. 🤪🤞 4
denders Posted September 9, 2023 Author Posted September 9, 2023 So................ The forward ASROC launcher and 3D CIWS that I purchased. While trying to use some of the PE that is part of the ship structure (cutting away plastic), the PE didn't seem to fit very well. I'm not sure if it's my construction order or not, but I ended up purchasing another kit for USS Pharris. Back to the drawing board and perhaps some of the PE won't be used. I did notice that some of the tiniest pieces on the ASROC launcher aren't on the example in their photos. 3
Peterpools Posted September 17, 2023 Posted September 17, 2023 Dave Unfortunately, been there and done that in buying/replacing the original kit with a second kit when I had no option - surely not a good feeling but does save the build. 3D Printed ASROC launcher launcher looks terrifically detailed. Fingers crossed all is "clear sailing' from here on. 2
denders Posted June 17, 2024 Author Posted June 17, 2024 Well, I'm back at this one. I decided that I performed too much surgery on the plastic and I bought another kit. (In case someone was wondering.) A little bit of a different assembly path. Back to testing my sanity. 4 1
BlrwestSiR Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 When I saw USS Pharris, I thought of the Tom Clancy book Red Storm Rising which I read in high school. Still have a copy of this around here somewhere. Meantime, all the tiny PE would make me claw my eyes out. I have a hard enough time with the 1/32 stuff. 2
Peterpools Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 Dave Glad you're back on the project and will be following with great interest.

Edit: Hah, I have it on kindle, I think I'll have to re-read it. 4
denders Posted June 18, 2024 Author Posted June 18, 2024 Fun time is starting..... One little bit at a time. 7 1
DocRob Posted June 19, 2024 Posted June 19, 2024 Wow, delicate PE work, tedious, but will add a lot of realism to the kit. Cheers Rob 3
