He's retired from the Navy and retired from a civilian career too. So I bought a Trumpeter 1/700 USS Nimitz, 1975. I was going to make a diorama with ocean, etc. While thinking about the project I thought I should add one of the escorts. He also at one time earlier in his career served on board USS Pharris. He's never mentioned the USS Pharris escorting the USS Nimitz, but I figured modeler's license, so the escort is going to be the USS Pharris. He's talked about one particular cruise and I found information online that lists the airwing complement, squadrons, aircraft numbers, aircraft types. So: As you can see, I'm going to try to drive myself insane with all the PE too.🤪 I've started the base, it's 15" x 42". I need to get some trim to add along the sided and stain. I'll be using modeler's license for the distance between ships too. I'll see how fast it progresses. At least I still get to model aircraft too. 😁 Lots of stuff and PE 😵 3

denders Posted July 5, 2024 Author Posted July 5, 2024 We were away for a bit, but it's progressing one tiny brass bit at a time. A lot more to go. 6 1
FullArmor Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Nice. Detailed railings. Looking forward to see more progress.🧐 3
BlrwestSiR Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 Fantastic work there Dave. Very clean work with gluing all that PE in place. 2
CANicoll Posted July 7, 2024 Posted July 7, 2024 Amazing work with all of that brass. Wow. Looks terrific. 1
denders Posted August 8, 2024 Author Posted August 8, 2024 This model was at NATS, so I took a photo for inspiration. It's a sister ship to the one I'm building. We were visiting with our friends a couple of weekends ago and I showed him the photo. He asked, 'what's that at the back?' and I replied, 'a CIWS'. He then told they didn't have one when he was on the Pharris, so scratch the CIWS. His comment also made me revisit the reference photos that I've found on the 'net. In some of the photos without a CIWS, the main mast had a different arrangement too. Onward, still working on those little bits of brass. I've actually been enjoying the concentration of those 'little bits of brass' and bought a 1/350 resin kit (at NATS) of DE413 the Samuel B. Roberts. Dave 5
Landlubber Mike Posted August 8, 2024 Posted August 8, 2024 Looking great Dave! Nice work on the PE. I have a few 1/700 builds in process now, and I enjoy the challenge of working with the microscopic PE - not easy, but makes for a much better looking model. 1
denders Posted August 26, 2024 Author Posted August 26, 2024 Still working away at the PE. The main mast and all its PE to go. 7

I got to thinking about the deck equipment and what was in the kit didn't satisfy me, to I went looking at Squadron. I keep looking for ways to drive myself crazy. 🤪 SERIOUSLY????
denders Posted August 31, 2024 Author Posted August 31, 2024 I figured that I may as well get started on this part of the project too. 7
denders Posted September 5, 2024 Author Posted September 5, 2024 More tiny stuff. The mast on the right will go on top of the stack. There's also more stuff to hang on the stack too. 7
Spitfire Posted September 5, 2024 Posted September 5, 2024 Amazing work, way beyond me nowadays but its great to watch your progress. Cheers Dennis 2
Peterpools Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 Incredible work with such super small details. Looking mighty good. 1

denders Posted September 8, 2024 Author Posted September 8, 2024 Thanks, Guys! The stack and mast are assembled. There are a few scratch pieces in there. Now for paint. There's a brass piece in there under the mast that wasn't there when I painted the bottom gray and hand painted the top of the stack black. I'm going to have to paint some gray primer then gray paint for that piece, unless I decide to hand paint that piece. Hmmm, I am using Tamiya paint for this one. Then from the existing black on up is black. That needs to be primed first. I did paint all the brass before assembly with Mr. Metal Primer, but I want to paint with paint primer too. The big thing will be wrapping a Post-it-Note to protect the gray and make sure I paint perpendicular to the surface. There are rigging lines from that broad piece in front, down to the deck. I'm not sure just what I'm going to use for that. I have some really strait wire that I used for rigging 1/48 biplanes, decades ago, that I might paint black and cut to length. And after seeing a posting on FB regarding signal flags, I'm contemplating adding some signal flags too. Need to search for the 'code' for Pharris. 7 1
GusMac Posted September 9, 2024 Posted September 9, 2024 Just stunning PE work at that scale. Glad you've got it well anchored - I'd be paranoid about sneezing and blowing it to kingdom come! 2
denders Posted September 28, 2024 Author Posted September 28, 2024 I'm still worried about sneezing and bending it. Working on decals, one side done. This particular ship is not one of the kit selections. Fortunately, I can 1094 out of what was provided, just 3 decal pieces each location, 10, 9, 4. The ship name isn't even close to getting letters from the provided decals, so, I purchased a separate decal sheet with letters. The good thing is that Pharris has two Rs side by side. They're aligned about as good as my hands will allow. 6
belugawhaleman Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 Amazing work so far! The tiny size and complexity of the PE is unbelievable! 2
Peterpools Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 Dave Absolutely incredible work ... simply brilliant and I wish I had your skills and talent, but a reality check says that would never happen - too old and the hand/eye coordination is long gone for such demanding and delicate work.
denders Posted October 3, 2024 Author Posted October 3, 2024 Thanks, guys! It's getting there. Either a flat or semi-flat clear coat. And some rigging which will include a U.S. Flag. Oh yeah, a helicopter too. 3 1
