Westland Wyvern S.4 late- 1/48 Trumpeter

I was looking at the stash and saw this kit sitting in it.

I've had it long enough that the ship I bought it from closed over 10 years ago.

Anyways, it has marking for the 1956 Suez crisis so it fits the GB nicely. Plus it gave me a reason to finally build it.

It'll be 100% OOB.

First up is the cockpit. The plane carried an ejection seat and has the distinction of being the first plane that a pilot successfully ejected from while underwater.

A quick paint job, nothing fancy.

The ejection seat in place. 10 pieces for this alone.

I realized I should add the included PE belts so those are next.

An interesting feature on the model is working contra props. They're geared so that they spin in opposite directions.

Assembled into the power egg.

The cockpit, camera and tail wheel (not in the pic) were installed into the fuselage. I added the power egg and closed things up.

Fit so far has been very good.

It's an odd looking airframe for sure , the working props is really neat ! When you finish it you maybe could consider doing the old spinning props using a hair dryer pic

Very interesting!  I have seen a few displays at different model shows, Telford SMW namely, where the displays featured fans to get the props moving.  Very cool the contra-rotating props will work on this build.

Time for an update. I got to work on the wings. The centre section went together easily. It's a good fit to the fuselage.

I then assembled the folding wing sections. On later builds of the Wyvern, the wingtip folds were eliminated so I glued them on straight. I had to clip the moulded on tab to get a better fit.  Likewise for the outer section, I didn't use the included tabs as they caused a fit issue. Instead, I've glued on some strip styrene.

Carl

Nice progress and looking mighty good. The counter rotating props are an unique touch and something I don't think I've seen before on a kit that actually work.

Nice work on the wings and except for very few kits, folding wings in the down position are normally a terrible fit and a major headache - your procedure is absolutely the right way to go.

I am with Guy a little of fuggly there Carl but saw a YT video the other night was a bit more impressed.;)

The Fleet Air Arm specialised in fuggly - Fairey Gannet was the perfect example.
