“Dinghy” Young’s “Dambusters” Lancaster

Both turret interiors have almost been completed. Drilling out the holes in the FN5 improves the look although everything will be black. Still to drill out the holes in the trunnions. No dorsal turret in this build, which saves some work. The turret interiors and the cockpit parts may head to the airbrush department. -

Yup, got the book. Know Pjotr too as he attended the HK Models stand several times at Telford. Great guy and very talented. -

Thanks, I also use extra thin but not with glass parts. As you say it has a habit of botching up things you don't expect. As the daimsraid took place in May 1943 I suspect that the interior was black. Will check pics beforehand of course. This build is a nice comparison to the Manchester and every now and then I will post some pics together. -

I did have two in fact and the plan was to cover them in milliput. It failed but still have one them . A solution will come in the end. now that airbrushing of the tail is finished I started building the tailturret. A nice little project. Of course I broke one of the tubular supports and these will be replaced by suitable rods. -

Thanks, I thought of that too but the linkages are so fragile and glueing suface is so small I decided against it. I will finish the entire tailplane and then store it away safely. This is to break this large model into smaller projects (I did learn from the Manchester project). Funny that the Manchester camo is different to the Lancaster. Will make a nice comparison when both are completed in due time (although the engine section for the Manchester is still an unsolved problem). -

Airbrushing of the tailplanes and fins has been completed. Tamiya gloss black sprays beautifully. The camo has been glossed with floorpolish. Due to the many fragile actuators I won’t spray the finflashes. Decals it is. The risk of breakage is too high. I am a coward I know -

Even in places where the sun doesn't shine you manage to cram in a lot of beautiful detail. This will be one of your best builds, if not the best. -

Tamiya Dark Green, the last drops I had. Need to invest in a new supply. Everything will be glossed with your favorite floor polish brand anyway before weathering. -

Thanks. Some progress. Using home made masks the camo was sprayed onto the tailplanes. Thin rolls of tape keep the masks a bit proud from the surface creating a nice feathered demarcation line. -

The reason why I chose this particular aircraft is that the actual one crashed in de area where the museum,I work for as a volunteer, is located. Recently some pieces of wreckage were identified at a small museum nearby of which they didn’t know it was from an aircraft, let alone such a famous one. We all know the pic of the wreck at the beach. In fact until February 1953 it was still lying there and one of our former volunteers used to hide in it during bad weather circumstances. During the 1953 springflood it was washed away. It must be there under the sand still. And we regularly try to find it. The tailplanes have been finished ready for a coat of paint. -
Hi Tom, that is very simple but very effective. Brilliant.

Looking great, you should enter that one in one of the Telford competitions. -

Thanks chaps, For this build the usual suspects such as aftermarket interior set by Eduard, still got some left from the Manchester (I haven't forgotten on that one Tom) And masks for the the transparencies. I plan not to use decals for the markings this time. Had used some of these for the squadron codes on the Manchester and was very pleased with the result. Multi corlour fuselage roundels will be a challenge I think. I plan to fully finish the tailplanes with camouflage and fin flashes, weathering etc. before starting on other assemblies to keep the project on track. Cees -
Hi all, I had this itch to build a propeller type again. And if it itches you have to scratch. Although this time no scratchbuilding is involved, ...I hope. Here’s a start with the tailplanes.

Lancaster ND644 in 32nd scale
Wingco57 replied to FME erk's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
Chaps, although I enjoy reading this topic it annoys me to read everytime that HK dropped the ball here and there. As a modeller it's a personal challenge to build a model you like and improve what you can. Accept a kit's faults and enjoy the process. There is no perfection. Deal with it -
RR Spey powered RAF Phantom conversion
Wingco57 replied to Wingco57's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
Hi Harv, thanks but no as they do not fit. Been there done that I need a Tamiya rear canopy and frame. I read that some aftermarket is being developed so here's to hoping. In the meantime I will contine this build and finish it bar the rear canopy and hope for a solution after that I can always maintain that it was a special project to Martin Baker to test ejection seats.- 414 replies

RR Spey powered RAF Phantom conversion
Wingco57 replied to Wingco57's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
With the harbour in sight I admit defeat. the rear canopy had come loose from the frame while masking the inside and had to be reglued. With disastrous results as there was a fingerprint on the clear bit. Sanding didn’t work so I tried to be a smartypants and glue the Revell part to the Tamiya rear section. But that was no succes either. So I have to either source a replacement canopy and frame or this project will be transferred to the shelf of d...elay. Noooo- 414 replies

I had to lightly sand the canopy because of irregularities, I hope floorpolish restores the clarity. Masking the inside of the canopy.- 414 replies

Wingco57 replied to Wingco57's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
Hope that doesn’t happen to me As you know at the time Tamiya San made things difficult by providing seperate canopy and frame parts. He really must have had great faith in his clientèle. Getting the glazing off the sprue without damage is impossible . I managed to get a nice fit but sanding and polishing and a dipping in your favorite floorpolish is still needed. You can see them here dryfitted in place. Really on the homestretch now.- 414 replies

Wingco57 replied to Wingco57's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
I don’t think the RAF ever referred to the FGR2 as “Rhino” At last the majority of the decals are done with the yellow walkways completed too. I don’t see how to make the very small red stripes radiating from these. Let’s say the maintenance crew forgot to mask them.- 414 replies

Another hurdle overcome, I modified the Tamiya NAVY decals to get a reasonable “V”. Really want to get these decals done over the coming days. Never mind the temporary missing auxiliary door, too little glue- 414 replies
