RR Spey powered RAF Phantom conversion
Wingco57 replied to Wingco57's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
I think it will be a 43 Squadron aircraft as I very much like the black and white chequers Next to the fuselageroundel. But there are others that are equally interesting. Just thought of a solution for the FOD-covers. I will glue the ones as shown in place and they can serve as a base for new ones made from thin plasticard. That way I can fit the intakes and then the filling frenzy can begin.- 414 replies

RR Spey powered RAF Phantom conversion
Wingco57 replied to Wingco57's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
Two types of tailplane, slotted and unslotted. Which ones to use? I tend to go for the unslotted Revell Parts as they do not need any modification. Preparing the FOD-guards. These need to be fitted first before the intakes can. Or I must find a way to fit the guards later, that would make life much easier( and painting too) Slowly but surely.- 414 replies

Wingco57 replied to Wingco57's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
Thanks Anthony, Some more work done on the outerwings. I plan to use the Tamiya ones as they have reinforcement plates which are characteristic for the RAF version. With these testfitted you can see it’s a big model (I have big hands). The intakes fit much better now but are not yet glued in place. And it is also nice to stick parts together without modification for a change, in this case the fuselage droptank.- 414 replies

Wingco57 replied to Wingco57's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
Well, the brace has made sure both "shoulders" are now in their correct place, eliminating the mismatch on the starboard side. Yesterday I glued the join between the wings and fuselage to get a firm bond. I can now work from there. Slowly but surely.- 414 replies

You will find them addictive. Though I am a propguy, I do have a thing for all things RAF including the Hunter, Lightning, Phantom etc. In the meantime I have fitted a thick piece of sprue between the “shoulders” behind the intakes. This serves as a brace and keeps the sides sturdy and even. Fitting the intakes will be easy now. But first thing to do is to finish the FOD-cover.- 414 replies

You are forgiven Anthony, but quit playing around with such beautiful complete aircraft I only deal with crashed bits and pieces at the museum. In the meantime the starboard wing is complete as well. With all this crosskitting testfitting is very important. One side usually fits better. But I like a challenge.- 414 replies

Neither have I. The reason I didn’t use the Tamiya upperwing parts in the end is that there is a mismatch between both leading edges.- 414 replies

RR Spey powered RAF Phantom conversion
Wingco57 replied to Wingco57's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
Port wing from Revell kit has been phitted against Tamiya phuselage (Ok, quit the boring wordplay Cees) Quite pleased how they compare to each other after some fettling. As soon as the glue has set they can be better brought together. I bent the trailing edge up a bit to get the visual effect of the deeper rear fuselage. It is quite effective but don’t tell anyone. Very pleased so far. Starboard wing to follow.- 414 replies

Typical Tamiya, perhaps Leftovers from their r/c cars. Some testfitting of the burnercans position using a plastic ring of the correct diameter. I am very pleased about it. Also have been doing some testfitting of the upperwing parts and strangely the Tamiya parts fit better than the Revell parts. This is a true Phrankentom.- 414 replies

1/32nd Heinkel 219 // Werner Streib crash At Venlo
Wingco57 replied to Rowdy's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
That I do not know, but I have read the story regarding the shooting down of five Lancasters in one sorty by Werner Streib. I think your best bet would be to look at as many pics as possible showing machines in roughly the same timespan. And of course you can never have it perfect but a glimpse of how it might have looked is a good start. IIRC Jeroen has some books on the Heinkel 219. -

No shake and bake kit I got that, but is it camera distortion or is the fuselage not in line?

Rowdy, IIRC the aircraft involved was factoryfresh or at least quite new, so I would keep the weathering light. The contrast as it is now may be a bit too stark. -

Wingco57 replied to Wingco57's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
The cockpit has been phinished and could be phinally pfitted into the Tamiya fuselage. The screws phrovided by Tamiya are very useful for clean phitment. After that there was nothing from stopping me to phfit the Revell underwing. Very Phleased how things are progressing. Somehow phantom builds have a lot of ph-words in the text.- 414 replies

Thanks, I call it “aanklooien”. Some work done painting the cockpit. The coloured knobs are artistic license and just for effect. Testfitting in the fuselage part already gives a nice effect. Cees- 414 replies

The fun of croskitting is that you can use whatever part you think is best, in my case I use the Tamiya parts. Modifying the Revell wheelbays is a necessary evil.- 414 replies

Wingco57 replied to Wingco57's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
Thanks Anthony, if that is possible I would be very pleased. I was surprised that the differences are slight between the two kits making crosskitting a pleasure. Small bit of progress, the Marconi ARI 18228 fairing was reinstalled on the Revell fin. Next, a mix between rescribing and building ip the cockpit.- 414 replies
