Anyone else catch the all black prop blades? No yellow tips. -

LOL! Hasegawa put it on the right wing. Thanks for the detail! Here’s where I’m at. Shutting it down for the night. -
Ordered a kit from Super Hobby out of Poland. It’s been sitting in US Customs in the Chicago area for 6 days now. In the past everything I’ve ordered went through Customs in NYC. Took about a day or two. Anyone have any idea with Chicago Customs how long I’m going to be waiting? FWIW, kit was from CZ, so no China import fees are being calculated.

I’ll try in April. We’re taking a two week cruise around Ireland and Scotland. Will make it easier since I’ll only have to abstain for two weeks. 😁

Another P-40E to P-40K build!
ScottsGT replied to ScottsGT's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
👍 Exactly! I’ve got the wing built, rudder and stabs done and today I jumped on the landing gear and wheels while putty dried. I did sneak down earlier this evening and sanded the putty since it went on thin and dried fast. Laid down more primer in the sanded areas to find my faults. I’ve got more putty to apply at the tail joint. Honestly, I’m going down before bedtime so the putty is cured by morning. Once I get the tail joint level and hidden, the rest will go fast! Should be ready for paint by the time my Sprue Brothers paint order gets here Friday. -

Thanks John! My patients is being tried because I like to give fragile glue joints and putty a rest overnight before proceeding. I worked on it today for about an hour and had to apply more putty and during landing gear assembly the braces you add into the slot on the legs were partially broken on the sprue. I got them installed, slipped the gear into the wing and glued the broken part into place. I’m waiting until the morning before sanding and removing the gear. I’m doing my best to stay focused and not crack open another “quick build” project to fill in wait times. 🤪 -

Yep, that’s exactly what I’m wanting it to do. Primer sticks good to sanded epoxy and then the putty melts into the primer creating a great bond between the two. I apply quickly and not fiddle around so the putty doesn’t wipe away the primer. -
LOL! This happened with my son and his dog.

Jim, Welcome to the forum! Looks like from my searching that Peddinghaus decals are your only choice. I’ve never used their sets because the one set that did interest me was over $100. I did do some forum searches on them and decided it just wasn’t worth the risk. I’ll let you decide after reading some reviews. Looking at the airplane, 95% looks like generic markings. The colors on the tail tip can be painted on, and you might be able to find a custom decal printer to make the nose art? Of course that would run about the same price as well.

Sanded the tail joint and laid down some primer to provide better adhesion of the Tamiya putty. I remember working on my Cutlass and the putty was lifting off the bare resin where I applied it. Trying to avoid that mistake again. -

First cut and sand. Reapplied cement to stick down the fuzzy edges. I’ll let this dry overnight and do a final sanding and shaping tomorrow morning. I used the Dremel bit by finger tip power to radius the opening. Applied tape for my sausage size fingers to grip it. -

A little progress this morning. Got the tail epoxied in place and a few more small parts glued on. But doing my research after the fact, I discovered the K model has a different exhaust opening panel. The rear most opening on the E has a scallop cut out. K does not. So it’s sprue and sprue goo to the rescue. I took a piece of sprue and filed the end with a round file at an angle. Glued it in place. Once it cures I’ll carve and sand it to shape. -
Yea, Williams Brothers. Funny you mentioned RC. I was looking at those tiny foam RC versions of these last night. Apparently with the stabilization tech in RC’s these days it’s an easy flyer. BTW, I’m throwing around the idea of getting back into flying RC on a small scale attempt. Not just smaller airplanes, but only one at a time. I have a tendency to go down deep rabbit holes with my hobbies and can’t do anything “small”. If I do, I won’t have $2000+ models again. I picked up a tiny Saito 30 last month. Thinking about a Robinhood 25 and once I master it, slap on a set of floats and fly it behind my house. It’s a hell of a big flying field as long as I keep the dry side up.

Thanks Hubert! But I reached out to the seller and he’s 99.9% sure he has them. He forgot he took all the decals out of his older kits and put them in ziplocks and filed them away. If he is wrong, I’ll let you know. UPDATE: Seller found the decals and he’s sending them to me.

Another P-40E to P-40K build!

Todays progress. Started playing with the tail fit. I heavily re-scribed the upper panel lines and punched the rivet holes deeper with a T pin and then started shaving the fuse top down to line up better with the top of the tail. Im close but got hangry for dinner and walked away. A little more fitting and I’ll break out the epoxy. -
This just arrived in the mail. I’ve always wanted to attempt painting one and this one popped up on Hyperscale with a set of Cutting Edge masks to paint the scallops and the major markings. What the seller failed to mention in the ad was that there were no decals. I’ll probably have to buy another kit just to get a set of decals now. I guess I can always build one out as a high speed Nazi gun ship loaded out with bombs hanging under it. I’ve always had a soft spot for these golden age air racers. Had always hoped someone would have either kitted them in 1/24 or the 1/18 prebuilt airplanes sold in toy departments because even in 1/32, they are tiny.

Well after a day of babysitting the grandkids from 1-6:30, I went down to my bench to unwind. Got the cockpit wrapped up. -

Stopping point for the day. Got the cockpit prepped for the Quinta decals and painted. Since I had my airbrush loaded with the green zinc primer color, went ahead and assembled the landing gear bay assembly and painted it too. -
Yep, another thread on the same project! I’m following in John’s footsteps here. Starting out with a new Hasegawa kit I smuggled across the border (the front door of my home) along with the really nice P-40K tail produced by Tim at B&B Resin Design. Of course first thing I had to do was play with the fit of the tail to the fuselage. I was pleasantly surprised that it fit much better than the E tail on my last build. One slight area of concern is the fuselage is a touch “tall” at the top. Some careful filing and sanding the fuse halves before attaching the tail will be all that’s needed. Panel lines line up perfectly. With this modified K tail you can really notice the stabilizer offset to counter engine torque. After just completing the E, I had flashbacks of my cockpits rear bulkhead not being glued in at the perfect angle. This time I taped up the necessary parts and dropped the bulkhead in place then gluing it to the floor. I’m posting this as the glue sets up. This is one area that gave me fits and bad feedback on the E build.

What is on your bench right now ? Share a picture :)

Bench cleaned off and P-40K project started! I think this is a first for me. Same model back to back. Oh wait. No it’s not. Forgot when I lost my freaking mind and built the 5 Revell F-16’s as the Thunderbirds in flight display. I built those at work during my lunch break. Does that count? I’m going to start a WIP thread this time. -

I’m calling this part done for now. Still needs decals, but I’ll do that once I build the launcher and trailer. -
Hubert, that sounds like my wife’s thinking. Along with “It was all on sale! I saved $XXX” while she spent $XXXX. I call it going broke saving money.
