John, you did go strictly OOB, right? But for the seat?

I pulled mine out today and looked at the open gunner position, and it’s a VERY easy and quick modification.  The separate control surfaces are nice, too.  I’m pretty Gung Ho about building one now, and if it comes out half as nice as yours I’ll be thrilled.

Yes Ernie, OOB except for the seat. I'm sure your build will be just as nice, if not better, than mine. Especially since you are using the "extras" that will dress it up nicely. I look forward to following your build. :)

That looks great, after I finish my current builds I might go on a USN 3 kit theme and include the SB2C.

Cheers

Dennis

Thanks Dennis. I say go for it! :)

One thing I was sweating out was installing the guns and related hardware in the gunners compartment. I figured it would be a very tight fit to be able to insert the guns/ring/seat, etc. It WAS a tight fit and needed a good bit of patience to get it in place but I managed to squeeze it in without breaking anything! Whew!!! :)

Looks like  that has worked out really nicely John, your pai t work looks super smooth and the surface detail looks rather good doesn't it!

Regards. Andy

Thanks Andy. I've been a fan of the ol' Testor's Dk. Sea Blue enamel for years and have used it on numerous builds with no problems (other than self-inflicted!). I will say the surface detail on this kit is outstanding. Too bad the rest of the kit isn't.

Brilliant ... you made it and went where nearly no man has gone before! Beautiful work

LOL Peter. Thanks. Can you believe I've finally gotten to the decaling stage!? I certainly had my doubts at times!🤪 I still have to add the gear covers, wing guns, slats, bomb rack under the wings, tail hook and a few other odds and ends. After I get all that done and the rest of the decals applied I'll overspray the whole a/c with a clear semi-gloss. THEN I can remove all the canopy masks. I hope to have this monster completed by the end of the week. :)

It's always SOMETHING with this model. I used stencils to apply the "Z" code letters and when I removed the stencil and masking on this side this is what happened. Not a disaster but just another thing to "fix". 🤪

Don’t count on it, John,  I have a regular way of snatching mediocrity from the open jaws of greatness.

Oh crap, John. Even after washing the plastic, this STILL happened??  I wonder if it needs to be prepped more like resin when you remove the release agent.

Maybe so Ernie. It wouldn't hurt to do that just in case. 🙄 At least it was just this one area and should be a easy fix (I hope!).

Simple dimple that. A touch of overspray at the front as well, but nothing horrible. I truly DETEST GSB. I have never been able to get a convincing finish, yet yours looked amazing.  GSB shows everything, almost as bad as gloss black

Just for kicks, I cut out some plastic. Interesting. The plastic is actually quite soft. Much like Kitty Hawk consistency. A bit softer than Wingnuts, but the opposite of Hasegawa.

With what you have to work with, John, you’ve done a fine job of interpreting the nuances of the Beast

Incredible ... just can't be but I guess also included in the kit box is an official jinx! I'm in the same camp as Ernie and these days even if I wash all the parts or not prior to starting, before priming, I always now thoroughly wipe down the model with Isopropanol at if I still feel any grease, I'll do a wipe down with Mr Color Self Leveling Thinners and when dry, follow up again with the alcohol. So far I've been pretyy lucky. With the Spit, I'm going to be using masks for the first time, and lifting/peeling paint is a new concern for me.

Fingers crossed, this is the end of the trouble and from here on the waters are smooth sailing.

That soft plastic is a blessing and a curse. I keep files on various a/c on my computer which I refer to as a alternate to the crappy instructions for this kit. The SB2C file sure has been a help.:) I see in your photo you have CA glue and Zip Kicker. You will need 'em for sure!

Barring more buggerups I hope to have it done by the end of the week. Fingers crossed! :)
