Hasegawa P-47D up

Invasion stripes look so good and acrylic paints no less. I'm betting the wing/fuselage seam is perfect, which allows you to paint the wings off the fuselage. I tried it just once and for me, it wasn't a good decision.

Earlier this year I started investing in Mig and Model Air paints again, as I decided to start breaking away from solvent based paints for health reasons. Very early this morning I was cleaning up some Mr Surfacer on the P-40 with Mr Color Self Leveling Thinner as always and the smell for the first time got to me. Not a smart move on my part, I quickly put on my respirator and opened the windows (it was 5:30 AM) and aired out the room for a good hour. Even though I'm heavily invested in MRP and Mr Color Lacquers, I'm for the most part going to stop using them and go back to my original plan of 100% acrylics and Ammo by Mig being my main pain as it is supposed to be 100% safe to use. I'm sure all the other acrylic/water based paints are close in safety.

Thank you Peter. The acrylics do have a "nice" smell and that's one reason I've decided to use them more although for NMF I'll stick with the Alclad colors, smell and all. LOL :)

Whew John, started on Thursday and laying paint down on Sunday………with me that’s 3-4 months of modelling……..looking mighty fine as ever…..

LOL Thanks Phil. This kit is really a easy build (except for the strange flap hinges which I found to have a bit of a cuss factor. Mostly due to poor instructions.) Painting will likely be the most time consuming part of the build. :)

Nice work John, Hasegawa is the way to go. I am currently playing with the Trumpeters N, but it might as well end up like a Hase/Trump kit bash.

Thanks Martin. I agree, Hasegawa is the way to go if you want a good kit of a P-47D. Too bad they don't have a razorback and a "N".

John,  I'm just amazed this is an OOB build - the detail is amazing.  The cockpit is fantastic.  That level of detail is just something else. I especially like the wear on the seat.  How long did it take you to put that all together?  Your build speed and quality are out of this world.  Are those prop tip stripes paint or decals?

I have not built a Hasegawa kit in forever, but you are making it look fantastic.  I'm disappointed you are not building Tallahassee Lassie, being a FSU grad, but hey, can't have everything.

Vallejo Model Air works pretty well for me.  I turned to that when I could not find Model Master Acryl.  The problem I have is finding the right colors.  Vallejo color matching is horrible.  But the paints (and the primers, esp the Gloss Black primer) I think are pretty good once you get the chemistry right.  I do love the MRP paints.  Respirator and all.

The colors you are getting are amazing as well - the blue around the canopy is striking.  And I'm a huge fan of painting before assembling, when possible.

Great work!

Thanks Chris for the kind words. Since all the parts for the cockpit came in the kit all I had to do was paint and do some weathering. Even the seat belts are OOB (Eduard PE prepainted). The prop tips are a combination of paint and decaling. The yellow tip itself is paint. The yellow/black stripes I made using strips of yellow decal paper with the thin black part from a MicroScale HO decal sheet of very thin black stripes which were just right for what I wanted to do. Those particular markings were correct for the Curtiss Electric paddle blade props. :)

I too like the blue coloring on the model and that's one reason I decided go with that scheme. If I could have found decals for Tallahassee Lassie I would have done that one but I think this one will do okay. :)

Microscale HO decals huh?  Excellent.  I would have gone blind trying to free hand the stripes!

What acrylic paints are you using?

Mr. Color but only for the invasion stripes. The rest are Testor's enamel and Alclad.

Great work on the Jug, John, I love the scheme and the way yours came out with these great looking invasion stripes. I built mine as Dottie Mae some years ago, but it was a very close competition between the schemes. One critical point in the otherwise trouble free build, I found was the cowling to fuselage fit, which looked a bit strange. I did some surgery there to make it look right, especially in the side view.

Cheers Rob

Thanks Rob. Yep, I had to do a little "adjusting" there also but the flap hinges gave me fits. I couldn't much tell heads or tails of the instructions. 🤪

John

Looking fantastic.

You're flying through these builds and I'm creeping with the P-40. All I managed to get done today was assemble the windscreen armor plate, mask it and the canopy framing - inside and outside and air brush the interior.

BTW, the wing to fuselage fit looks perfect.

Thank you Peter. The wings/fuselage mated up very nicely. Only a smidgen of Vallejo plastic putty needed. Wish they all fit that well! :)
