1/32 Curtiss SC-1 Seahawk

Not planned but couldn't help myself. For some reason I wanted to work with a resin kit and this was in the stash.

It's an impressive kit for the level of detail and precision that it's been made with. Not to mention the current circumstances surrounding the country.

Then again I shouldn't have expected anything less after having picked up their Cavalier Mustang conversion.

Upon opening the box, the fuselage halves were already taped together so I couldn't resist doing a dry run of the major parts.

The fit is exemplary, on par with many injected moulded kits.

Here's the only significant flaw that I could find. It's on the one piece main float.

First up was removing some of the parts from their casting blocks. This was fairly easy as the cuts were straightforward and well marked.

Then a coat of paint. This brought out the only shortcoming in the kit. There are no detail colour callouts for the cockpit. There's a pic of the engine provided in the instructions but that's it.  Fortunately I found a couple cockpit photos online.

I got some work done on the cockpit.

For the belts, I used a set of Eduard pre-printed ones. They were in the stash so that made it easy.

Details on the side consoles were either brush painted or dobe with paint markers.

Everything together.

I've had my eye on this kit for a while now.  The pictures you show are amazing, I'll have to resist the temptation and live vicariously through you...great job so far!

How about suggesting / asking / commanding Santa about this one ? Plus Sergei Andreyi is such a nice guy. That he produces such gems whilst living in Zaporijia is nothing short of a miracle.

Thanks folks! If you have any interest in the subject or the kit, don't hesitate. It's well worth it.

Continuing on the kit, I finally did step 1 which was the engine. I painted the engine blank in Interior Green and then masked it and painted the engine in semi-gloss black with a touch of gunmetal.

While that dried, I drilled out and painted the ignition harness.

Next up was my least favourite part of a radial engine- the wiring.

I used 0.3mm wire for this after drilling the requisite holes in the ignition harness and the cylinders.

I gave the cylinders a dry brush with Ammo Gun Metal. It's subtle but there.

The cylinders were then glued to the crankcase.

I had the scrap the paint off the attachment points as the fit tolerance was tight. Once paint free, they slipped in.

Using 0.7mm nickel silver silver rod, I made the pushrods.

Finally I attached the ignition harness and started on the wiring.

Nice progress, Carl. FYI, the paint job of the Wright R-1820 was pretty standardised:

- grey reduction gear crankcase

- NMF cylinders. I believe they were made of steel (but maybe not on the late marks as used on the Seahawk) and the top of the cylinders showed heat discoloration.

- aluminium cylinders heads

- enameled black baffles.

Thanks Hubert, I was going from the pic I posted earlier. I was worried a bit about the colour but at this point I'm going to leave it as is. I think it would be too challenging to re-paint it without disassembling things.

Nice looking model kit! nad really nice work...

Sorry to ask, but on those first pictures, how many WIP do you have on the working table??? 😀

All of them…. :)

Martin is pretty close.

In that pic, there's:

- ZM F-4G and RF-4EJ

- RFM M551 Sheridan

- Trumpy Wyvern

- Fisher Sea Fury

- Special Hobby Whirlwind

I think the Whirlwind is the only one without an actual WIP thread.
