DRUMS01
I read through all the string and find some of the "other" hobbies amazing. Those who like weapons and shooting look to have some impressive stuff. The few pilots we have are over the top. A while back I was contemplating starting a new hobby of restoring a military 1:1 vehicle but costs and dedicated storage were a little too steep. My wife and I inherited her fathers coin and precious metals collection but it was already so large that we sold most of it to other collectors and just kept the ones valuable or sentimental to us. I guess with my wife and I both in our 60's now and still taking care of our 25 year old special needs son, that takes most the time and is much more than any hobby (it's actually a blessing). So what are my other hobbies other than modeling? - Playing percussion in a regional concert orchestra, at home in a small studio, and in a progressive Christian church setting. The set I use at church is made by Yamaha while the one at home is by Pearl. Started playing at 8yr old. Played professionally beginning at 15. Its been over 55 years and still enjoying it as much as ever. Also play conga's and other auxiliary percussion. - Motorcycling, both one up and with my son. - And my last would be collecting and shooting firearms. some of them include: (sorry no pictures) Colt custom shop AR15, Delta HBAR National Match, Competition rifle (100 - 1000 yard matches) CZ Model 452 bolt action target rifle in .17 HMR (short range varmint hunting) Mauser 98K in 8mm (just for fun) Norinko AK-47 (fun) Ruger Red Lable 12 ga O/U Trap and Skeet P08 1942 BYF Luger matching numbers with all markings and stamps 80%+ (Black Widow) FNX tactical 45 cal with suppressor, tac light, and optic (home defense) Springfield Armory M1 Grand National Match 30-06 (1000 yard match) Ruger Mk-2 Competition Target (pin top and steel matches) Smith & Wesson 686 custom shop 8" target in 357 mag with scope (100 yard steel target match) and more..... We have a high-tech in-door range just 2 miles away, a 100 yd concrete bench range 10 miles away, and a mile range just over an hour away. I don't go actual hunting anymore, just sport and competition target shooting. I brought Jarrod (my son) out simple sheet shooting and 22 bench rest shooting last fall and he loved it. Well, I guess I do actual hunt (for ground hogs) on my brothers farm. Not to eat but to eliminate from pasture and planted fields.
CANicoll
We have a nice woodshop here where I live and a CNC machine. The box at the top I made for my mother's Christmas present two years ago. Made a serving tray for myself out of some extra cherry wood. One of the guys here showed me how to turn pens on a small lathe he has and that has been a lot of fun. I think I've made maybe 45 pens at this point.

I didn't show the pen blanks I cracked, shattered or otherwise screwed up. But it is a fun hobby. Having some really smart and helpful people in the shop (like the guy who showed me how to make the pens) is a huge help. Chris
ScottsGT
I just assembled this upper from used parts I picked up online. The vintage DPMS handguard is actually off of my .22 upper I built years ago. Works better with my big fat silencer since it slips right into it, barely. Can’t wait to try it out with subsonics. But I have to be careful to not have too much fun. Ammo to feed this is a buck a round.
BlrwestSiR
Lovely woodworking there Chris. I've never tried turning something but Lee Valley (a woodworking shop) keeps pushing it.

You know how close I’ve come to setting up a lathe for turning pens? Go away evil hobby spreader!! I don’t need another hobby. Im just thankful I’m too broke to afford a big building to set up a wood shop. Of course then I’d have no time for models. BTW, beautiful work there! 2

Lot 335: Spanish Destroyer Bolt Action Carbine in .38 ACP .38 ACP? Same as .380 ACP? Odd choice of round for a rifle. Must have been built for a country that does not allow military calibers in the common folks possession.

The wood is actually fairly dull, until the final finish (CA if you can believe it!) is applied, then its 'wow!'. Give it a whirl! Takes me about 2-3 hours start to finish. Thanks Scott. I was fortunate to be able to use the pen lathe that one of the guy's bought. I just picked up my own gouge and then all the pen bits and pieces and the wood blanks. But, yes, it is both a time and money sink. HUGE! Like - I could work on this cockpit, or I could do a pen. One or the other...

ScottsGT
Kevin, I’ve got a 1990 F-250 with the 351W and auto. Had to get the trans rebuild Oct. of ‘22. I picked up when it had only 55,000 miles. Got right at 58,000 now. Sorry to hear you had to let go of the Garand. It would be a cold day you know where before I sold mine.

Well it was the easiest choice Scott when you think about it unlike the G-43,Fn-49's or the unfired Enfield those are hard to track down M1 Garand will they are all over.I P/U my truck in 2017 with 82K on the dash I just like that ole truck smaller than the 2014 and more power.
KevinM
So a young Ladd as we called him at work mentioned how he liked to build a River Table and started showing me some videos to which I said ".I know of them".I mentioned that I have a piece of Cedar sitting in the shop for ten years now just waiting for an opportunity and for him to come by and look at it.The ladd(Cam) liked the board and so it began I gifted the board and the rest was on him.Cam built the boxes bought $300 dollars of mix/tools and this is where we are at.I visited one of our local lumber yard/Mill to see about planing down the boards seeing I only have a 13" planer he sent me back home to remove the excess epoxy on the bottom so I went an bought a Bauer 3 1/2" electric planer and cordless(I say Bauer is right up there with Makiata in some regards). What you see on the floor thus far is about 1 1/2hrs of work and I am not done one board left the worse one.The black River Cam chose is iridescent in nature just does not show up well yet.The pieces once planed will get a fine sanding and polish and then and oil he has selected is applied. The ladd is going with metal legs ATTM and asked about a local welder I mentioned Mr.Balius if he is still working it.

ScottsGT
Well I couldn’t help myself again. One of the popular online gun shops were selling police trade in gen 2 Glock 17’s for $200. The catch was chipping at the Magwell opening from hitting seat belts and desks. Of course add in sales tax, shipping and transfer fee at my local FFL along with an aftermarket magwell it’s now a $300 Glock 17. How I got it After the eBay magwell.
KevinM
The lines on the Glock have never really satisfied me give some of the older stuff on handguns Scott and I am good to go and I am talking maybe 1970's back.

You know how many years it took me to warm up to the idea? Yea, a lot. I’m mostly a 1911 guy. Still want a hi-Power though. I’d love an older deep blued model. And of course my grail 1911 is a Colt royal blue pre A1. Already have a set of ivories for it.
biggtim
I love 1911s!! I do not like Glocks. They feel cheap and toy-like to me. Plus, if I run out of ammo with my 1911, I can use it as a club. For modern semi-autos, I prefer SIG. I have a P320 Nitron full size with the x-change kit that allows it to shoot both 9mm and .40 S&W. My all time fave pistol is the Colt Peacemaker in .45 Colt. I have a nice Uberti made replica that is a beautiful gun with case hardened frame and 5.5 inch barrel. Just a ton of fun!!
