I have, literally, dozens of paint tins / bottles / vials of various brands like Tamiya, Gunze, Hataka, Alclad, Citadel, Prince August, AK, Vallejo, even some 30 years-old tins of Humbrol and Revell enamels, plus some other brands I forget, but I find myself reluctant to use any of those in an airbrush, because of the thinning issues. The gooey mess that clogged my airbrush when I tried to use Vallejo’s black primer thinned with Mr Levelling Thinner has left me traumatised for some time …

So I am always going back to MRP as soon as I have to fire the airbrush. On the other hand, acrylics are my goto solution when using a brush (but not Tamiya, which are awful with a brush).

And, as I am trying more and more figure painting, I find myself keener and keener on using oils. I bought some tubes that I thought were oils, by AK or Vallejo, and found to my dismay they were acrylics. Gimme some old Windsor & Newton, Rembrandt or Abteilung anytime over these acrylics I do not know how to dilute. In spite of my initial reluctance on oils, because of their drying time, they are unbeatable for pigments’ fineness. And turpentine is OK for diluting oils. I even used oils for painting the radios of my Potez 25 in the Sandbox GB.

Hubert, if you want to speed up the drying time for oil paints, add a drop or two of Japan dryer. It makes oil paints dry as fast as acrylics. I used it few times that I had to airbrush Model Master. It dried in minutes without any issues.

Hair dryer works well, as as does W&N liquin for oil paints . Liquin also makes oil washes a lot finer .

The missus was using her sewing machine tonight so I couldn't crank up the airbrush to prime the cockpit parts of the Attacker. Instead, I finished this little thing.

Apologies for the second photo being out of focus, it's actually hard to photograph as it's so shiny. Goes together really well for something that just clips together. Was a fun little distraction.

SAS Jeep and F/A18 awaiting the the booth time, I needed to build…….

One returning to the hobby back in 2016 /17 I bought the Tamiya KT having built this back in 1974, I thought a legacy build would be fun. Didn’t want the standard so why not the Porsche turreted version. Coming from a design industry who couldn’t admire the lines. This old Tamiya mould is from 1993, so 30 years old. It has horrendous vinyl tracks, why oh why Mr T.  My thought back then was through all the AM I could bar metal tracks. So here we are. The kit is showing its age against new moulds but it’s a sentimental build…….in hindsight and having and hopefully moved my skill level on from those early, I probably wouldn’t have spent so much on AM and probably would have got a stunning Dragon KT with magic tracks…..

I finally got some bench time and decided to try and make some progress on the FW190 sitting on my bench. 

I painted the coaming and added the gun sight as well as the canopy. 

I'm hoping to mount the canopy and start on the camo shortly.

I like oils as well, Hubert. I even painted a whole plane, a PZL P.11 completely with oils as an experiment and it worked. Oils have significant characteristics, you can´t have with other media.

I remember very well your PZL painted with oils, Rob.

i also lifted your idea of making a larger paint box using a plastic storage box. The led strip all around the box makes a HUGE difference when spraying my parts

Those mid 90's Tamiya KTs aren't to bad for my money, I've built a couple over the past few years , the basic shapes are pretty good even if the details are a bit simplified by todays standards. The tracks though ....yes agreed ... abysmal and often too short ....I bin them and use Fruils but then you are doubling your investment .

Nostalgia builds are fun though , will you be wearing some flares for this build , whilst Bay City Rollers play in the background ?

The rear part is just tacked in place so I can start on the camo.

Upper side base camo is on. 

At this point I noticed that I should have used RLM 70 and 71 for the scheme I'd planned (Yellow 5, JG26). 

So switch to Plan B, and Black 21, JG51 it is!

I did get there underside painted though. 

Just need to do the yellow bits then a clear and stickers.

I masked off the yellow tonight. 

And got it sprayed. 

Now for a clear coat.
