1/32 Hasegawa Bf-109G-6 "Hartmann"
efrick replied to efrick's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
Thanks Rick! -
Hello All, I am currently to the painting stage on my Hase 109G-6. I have had this in the stash for an age (i.e., since it was released). I decided to finally build it, not only because I was in the mood for a fairly simple project but if I build this one THEN I can justify buying the new Revell kit Since this particular aircraft is very well documented, I looked around the net and found this very good profile (which also seems to closely match actual photographs of the plane itself) Paints are Gunze aqueous and Tamiya, both thinned with "Mr. Leveling Thinner", which is really great stuff! I've never used it before and am both happy and impressed with the result. And here is my progress so far. The mottling, as usual, will require a bit of editing/toning down/addition/subtraction. Weathering and post-shading are yet to come. Hopefully, I will finish her up this weekend. Thanks for looking! Regards, Ed

As always, I am both impressed and envious of anyone that can successfully do that camo scheme. Beautiful! Regards, Ed -
Thanks for posting the pics! A lot of inspring and beautiful work on display!

Hi Danny! Sorry about the old workshop. Your new shop is quite nice as well, though! It appears very well thought out and put together. Looking forward to seeing your builds! Regards, Ed

Putting your kits and paints in Storage
efrick replied to Clashcityrocker's topic in General Discussion
Hi Clash! Dave is right...absolutely keep your kit decals with you in the house. If possible, I would also add that your paints and adhesives would also benefit from being kept in a "climate controlled environment". Boxed up, paints don't take up too much space. As for the kits, they should be alright as long as the temps in your garage don't get TOO excessively hot. Regards, Ed -
Hi Andy! Fantastic renovation! It's amazing the difference white surfaces makes isn't it? Thanks for posting. I love seeing pics of other folk's workbenches. Regards, Ed

I also use the OptiVisor, but also have a magnifying lamp as well as one of those "Extra Hands" thingies with the weighted base and magnifying glass. Of the three, I REALLY love the OptiVisor. (Does this leave any of you with the impression that I am getting blind as a bat?)

Oh, I forgot...I also resolved to take better photos of my kits...this Galaxy 2 phone camera REALLY stinks on ice. I am going to dust off an older, but perfectly good, Canon digital camera and set up some sort of photo booth.

Den, I completed precisely zero kits in 2012 and (almost) completed one in 2013; that kit will be my first completion for 2014. Prior to a move in late 2011, I used to manage 3 or 4 kits a year. I, too, have simply resolved to do better, production-wise, in '14. Regards, Ed

Superb! I particularly love the 262 and the "naked" wooden Horten. Regards, Ed

1/32 Revell Heinkel 219 wip

Brilliant work Bevan! The lattice-work that you have applied appears perfect. I have been trying to muster up the courage to give this camo pattern a whirl. Regrds, Ed -
Wishing to proclaim that I had completed ONE model in 2013, I had hoped to finish this kit by the stroke of midnight on December 31st. That was not to be. A few technical difficulties arose after I gloss-coated the kit and began applying decals last week. In brief: I chose the "Yellow 11" scheme for this kit because there is a wealth of photographic reference material floating about the net on this particular aircraft (in particular, this site: http://robdebie.home.xs4all.nl/me163/ye11.htm ) For those planning to source some of the decals from this particular release of the Hasegawa kit to complete the new Meng kit, I would advise caution. The decals in my kit, while looking quite good upon initial inspection, were incredibly difficult to use. Afer sliding them off the backing paper for placement, I realized that a strange, chunky exudate remained attached to the back of the decals. They also took an unusually long time to seperate from the backing paper after being placed in warm water. The upper wing crosses were virtually unusable because of this; fortunately I had an old Micro-Scale generic German crosses set stashed away. The "Yellow" 11" and tail "Werknummer" were fortunately not as bad as the crosses, and most of the white chunky "gravel" disappeared with generous baths of Solvaset. All of this may be a "one-off" quality control problem, however. I am usually quite happy with Hase decals, especially those in their newer releases (these decals are dated 2007). The above site seems to confirm that this particular aircraft was painted in the late war "Lichtgrun" and "Dunkelgrun" greens. The kit instructions would have you paint the kit in 74/75/76. I plan on putting the finishing touches on her this weekend. At any rate, here she is, gloss coated and awaiting a few more decals:

RLM paint technical orders WW2, fighters and bombers

Thanks General! I have also R-Click-Saved this. I've never been too clear on the E-series 109's and their cockpit color transition, so this is most helpful! -
Market Research - your top 'wanted' kits in 1/32 & larger please!
efrick replied to richdlc's topic in General Discussion
I'll second that. And, of course, a Do-17Z that a number of us keep prattling on about would be a hit (and, by "a number of us", I mean myself included :-) ) -
I second the motion! Let's see a Tiger on the move! Beautiful work!

I think that this is the first time a new-mold kit has been released while I was still trying to finish the old-mold version... But I digress... One thing I noted right off the bat: The clear section of the canopy and the canopy frame appear to be molded as separate pieces (ala' the mid-70's Revell 1/32 FW-190D). Assuming that the clear section is a precise fit with the frame, this obviates the need for canopy masking. The inclusion of photo-etch belts and instrument panel is a nice touch, as are the Cartograf decals. The wing root-fuselage assembly looks to be an improvement over the gap-ridden butt-join of the old Hasegawa kit as well. I like what I see! Ed

Using Rotex/Dymo Embossing Label Tape as scribing guide
efrick replied to rkranias's topic in Modelling Discussion
Hi Rick, I have used it for years, although I think it is getting harder to find. I think peel-and-stick printable labels have been the death-knell of the Dymo labelers. I have a few rolls of it left, which is likely a lifetime supply for me. I only use it as a guide when restoring short lengths of panel lines lost in sanding. -
1/32 Revell Heinkel 219 wip

Beautiful! Your work on the cockpit out of the box makes any aftermarket pieces seem redundant! Very convincing! Ed -
WOW! That is a rich source of reference materials. I just read through the Bf-109 F manuals. The cockpit drawings/photos alone are a treasure! Thanks for sharing! Regards, Ed
