ProModeler 1/48 PBY-5A Catalina + Goodies, RFI

Nice work on the PBY. Still watching with interest. Good stuff! Too bad there isn't a good, modern kit of this bird.....you know, one that average modelers can successfully build. -
Some items arrived today: First from Tower Hobbies; came some needed supplies. 1. Tamiya lacquer thinner. 2. Tamiya Lp-18 Dull Red lacquer paint...5 bottles. This looks close to red primer, I think, and I'll be using it on my Takom Krupp Raumer. 3. A bottle of Testors Dullcote. Also arriving today from Sprue Brothers came a model from Miniart; their D8500 mod. 1938 German Agricultural Tractor in 1/24 scale. I've been waiting for this larger Lanz Bulldog . It looks like a really great kit.

Nichimo 1/20 Cessna 172 N9812J "Juliet"
belugawhaleman replied to Hawkwrench's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
When I was a kid living in Oak Brook, Illinois they used to have air shows at a local airstrip. One time a pilot who owned one of these aircraft took my sister and myself, up for a ride. These days such an event would be unthinkable..... We had no parental consent....we were alone. He took us up for a short trip.....he even flew us over our own house, brought us back down in just...probably, no more than 10 minutes. Very cool. It's still the only time I was ever in a light aircraft. But I remember the type. Your build reminds me of the time. 1974 I think it was. I also remember seeing this kit, and taking a peek inside the box at my favorite hobby shop-now sadly, long gone. Thanks; I'll be viewing with intrest. Paul -

Looking great Scott! ......and Huge! -
Thanks for the comprehensive review Fran. Looks like a great kit.....with the added stuff from Special Hobby I'm sure it would make an awesome project! Thanks again for posting.

Thanks guys.

I think you misunderstood me. I don't use leveling thinner as a cleaner , I use it to thin my Tamiya Acrylic paint. I never clean with it. Yes, I mix the Tester's Dullcote 50/50 with Tamiya lacquer thinner sometimes upping the thinner a bit . works well.

I have a few WW I models...all seem to require Moss Green. WTH is Moss Green? I have mostly Tamiya Acrylic paint....It's just what I have. It seems every CSM model, Takom model, that I have requires this elusive green. What Tamiya equivalent exists that matches this color? Can I make up a Tamiya mix for this? What can I use? Please, share your experiences and expertise. Seriously, it's frustrating, I have been discarding projects based on the requirement of this elusive color. Thanks; Paul

I have used Tamiya's lacquer thinner, hardware store, and Leveling thinner and honestly, they all seem completely different....... So, what is lacquer thinner?. I use Tamiya lacquer thinner with Testor's dullcote....it seems to work best with that stuff, the hardware stuff for cleaning up, and leveling thinner for everything else. Great question, what is lacquer thinner?

1/32 Short Stirling

Enjoying this build, very interesting! Your skills, very impressive. -
As a cleaner for my paint brushes and airbrushes. I use it to flush out the airbrush quickly between color changes. I add some to the color cup with an eye dropper, use a large soft bristle paint brush to give the cup a quick scrub, and then spray out the remaining solvent. I also buy lacquer thinner, but i use that when i need to soak something. Also I found that Simple Green works well on parts like airbrush bottles and parts for my Paasche H when usingTamiya Acrylic paint. I don't use simple green on plated parts. I haven't used the Tamiya cleaner as glue, somehow I don't think it would flow as well as the extra thin glue. Besides, I Like to use the cleaner separate as the bottles often get contaminated I also found that denatured alcohol works well for removing Tamiya Acrylic paints. I always have a gallon of that around as I use it for steam engines. I really use the Tamiya stuff when I need to clean items quickly, it removes paint, all kinds, instantaneously.

More stuff today: From Burbank's House of Hobbies two essential products; yet another bottle of Tamiya's Airbrush Cleaner, and from Mr Hobby some of their Leveling Thinner 400. Good stuff at what I thought was a good price from The House of Hobbies. https://houseofhobbies.com/products/mr-hobby-mr-leveling-thinner-400ml

Great work so far! The wood grain on the prop looks excellent!

Got a some items in the mail today: First, from Sprue Brothers came a kit that I've been looking at for a while; from Takom it's their Skoda 42 cm M. 1917 Heavy Siege Howitzer in 1/35. An interesting subject, ......it comes with a figure of Erich Von Manstein....strange, that. I also got another bottle of Tamiya's formidable airbrush cleaner. I buy this stuff whenever , wherever I can. Good stuff. From Scale Hobbyist came another kit from Takom; ...this time, their WW 1 Heavy Battle Tank Mk.IV Tadpole. This is an odd, extended version of the Mk.IV tank meant to deal with wider German trenches. It had its problems and was never put into mass production.

R.I.P. monocote gun. I lost mine about 18 years ago. I built a GB racer....never flew it.. but its there. Please, take time to lay it at respectable rest...my condolences.

I'd love to have the skills and patience to pull off building one of these kits......about the only one I think I could is that little Junkers monoplane.....love that one. And, these kits are too costly for me. I'm happy to live vicariously through others and witness one being built. Please post your build!

Great work so far Chris. Figures look great and I'm anticipating a great finish for your Catalina. As this is one of my favorite aircraft. I remember seeing the Catalina used by Jacques Cousteau in his tv specials in the 1970s as a kid. Always liked this bird. -
Hobbycraft P-51 finished
belugawhaleman replied to JohnB's topic in LSM 1/32 and Larger Aircraft Ready for Inspection
Nice! Once again John..... A superb finished model done quickly! John, I don't know big your stash is but I think you're going to run out of Mustangs! Please, as a favor, build a Brewster Buffalo..... Now That would be cool! -
Yes, I see what you mean about being stringy.....I was going to try it on my Steyr windshield, but decided to use small dabs of Future instead. Anyway, I'll find a use for it.

From Burbank's HOUSE OF HOBBIES today came so tow cables from Polish maker Eureka XXL. I have been looking for these for a while and was happy to find them. They come in sizes from .06 mm to 1.25 mm. I bought some in all sizes, two each in the Larger sizes (1.1 and 1.25). They look good and I look forward to not using the string found in some kits.
