I was really surprised to see this kit isn't expensive......harv

It really isn't that much but the hull is basically empty. Shipping is the only challenge if you're ordering it from overseas.

With the upper hull seam dry, I glued the lower hull together.

This one has a few more gaps in it but it's the underside so shouldn't be as visible.

After cleaning up the seam on the conning tower I had to replace some of the rivets. They're raised so I tried some Mr Surfacer 500 dabbed on with a piece of wire. It mostly worked out.

Now to let the hull dry a bit and then start working on the seams there.

New work space looks great, and super kit to try it out, it's huge! Looking very good!

Cheers

Thanks Kev! I keep wondering what could be bigger. Than I get the silly idea of a diorama with the Hobbyboss B-24J in Coastal Command colours.:D

Alithough I suspest Sue would use that as ground for a divorce..

Nice progress and nice fix for the lost rivets.

Thanks Peter. They're not perfect but I'm happy with them.

So, the other day I had the hull by the laundry sink drying after rinsing off the sanding dust and got confirmation of the above. Sue wanted to know what the monstrosity was. When I told her and that I was thinking of a diorama with it (jokingly), I got the look.

As mentioned above, the seams on the hull are now sanded smooth Soni started adding some of the details like the dive planes and the deck walkway.

I then started on the paint. I wasn't sure how best to break up the monotone of the hull so I started with some squiggles for pre-shading.

I'm not really sure it's worked out so will most likely do some post-shading once the hull is completed.  We shall see.

Nice progress and fingers crossed the mottling comes through the hull paint to break up the solid gray.

Keep ‘em comin

Peter

Thanks folks!

The mottling hasn't worked out as well as I hoped so I'm going to do some post shading ok it once I've got the whole lower side colour on. The port side is now done so I can start on the starboard one next. So far I've used about 1/4 bottle of Mission Models Gunship grey. Now I understand why my LHS said they haven't made any money carrying the brand. It seems to last a while.

It's hard to change brands.  I've only in the last two years added two brands that I'm working into my builds.  I still rely a lot on Tamiya.

I've tried a few different brands and some don't live up to the hype that's for sure. I'm still mostly a Tamiya paint user and now that they've got their lacquers, it is hard to not use them. I used Gunze for a while when it was more available and then it becomes hard to find here. Now there's more shops carrying it so I've started getting that again. It's handy as it's compatible with Tamiya.

I've also got AK's Real Colors as they're easier to get than Gunze and have a nice selection of colours.

The big change for me is that my sons are now building kits and I'm trying to find suitable options for them. Paint that's easy to clean up and not too pungent being the main criteria.

On such a big model, it could be interesting to simulate the light cast of the surface waves on the upper hull sides, to get a bigger variety into the paintjob. That depends of course on the dio, maybe you could enhance the idea with the shadow of the preying B-24 ;).

So a small update. I finally got the rest of the dark grey on. I ended up usng a different pre-shading approach. I decided to do vertical stripes of a darker grey and then sprayed over everything with the final colour. I think it works better than what I was doing before. You can see what I've done on the upper hull.

Now to mask it off and start on the upper hull main colour.

Thanks Harv!

I ran into a small hiccup. I masked off the lower hull and sprayed the black waterline mark.

The port side came out fine.

The starboard side I had a bit of paint lift.

Not sure why that happened. But the bigger issue was how to fix it. I decided to try Post-It notes and fixed a section at a time.

For the upper hull, I think I'm going to have to try some seriously de-tacked tape and hope for the best.

Ugh!  Paint lift!

I've gotten to the point where if I know I'm using masking...  I lightly sand the area and then use Tamiya paint as primer.  The technique rarely ever fails.

Carl,

my method is close to Garys but I use Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 which also fills up the „hole“. After that I sand the complete area with 1000 grid sandpaper  and finish the whole area with 2000 grid. If wanted superfinish can be done with 8000 or 12000 grid sanding cloth.

I hope for the best, hairless underarms will be one result for sure, given the size of the boat.

Thanks Gaz! I thought of that when the first bit of paint lifted. This is the first time I've had paint lift since Model Master acrylic first came out and became SOP for that brand.

I've got Tamiya Primer in a jar here as well as Mr Surfacer just need to use them.

Not only that but I'll have more hair in the paint than I do normally from the pets.
